The Uses Of Sage Plants

Use fresh sage leaves for a medicinal tea.


The common sage plant is found in warm, temperate climates and adapts well to the backyard garden. Its leaves are grayish green and measure approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. The plant grows to a height of approximately 12 inches, has a bushy habit and flowers in the warmest months, usually August. Use in Spiritual Ceremony


Sage is used in the spiritual ritual known as smudging. Smudging is a ceremony in which sage is burned to rid a home or other personal environment of negativity or to purify a space. Place a small bundle of sage in a deep stone bowl or other appropriate vessel and light a small portion of it so the bundle smolders rather than flames. Carry the bowl with the smoking bundle throughout the space while asking the universe to cleanse the space, rid it of negativity and remove bad spirits.

1. Use weighted baseballs or stretch cords to increase pitching strength. Embedded Tick Removal

Ticks present a special type of danger. They carry bacteria that can cause illness, such as Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. If you go camping, hiking, or hunting, it is important to have someone check to make sure you have not picked up a tick. It is just as important to know remove ticks properly to reduce risk.


What You Need


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns against using outdated methods to remove ticks. Folk remedies, such as using a match to burn it out or petroleum gel to suffocate the tick, are generally ineffective, and in the case of the match, dangerous. Only two tools are recommended for proper tick removal: a fine tipped pair of tweezers or a notched tick removal tool. Available for purchase at most stores that carry camping supplies, a tick removal tool will be useful if you camp often.


You will also need a pair of gloves, tissue or paper towel to protect the individual removing the tick. You should not try to remove a tick with bare hands. Disinfectant, such as alcohol or iodine, will clean the bite area completely. Have something available to wash your hands with soap and water plus a container to store the tick in after extraction.


Getting Started








Before you attempt to remove the tick, you should wash your hand thoroughly with soap and water. It is important to keep things as clean as possible. A tick bites opens up an area in the skin. Keeping the skin clean will help prevent infection. Put on some gloves or use something to cover your hands before you remove the tick. The goal is to keep yourself safe while pulling the tick out of the person affected.








Removal


Using the tweezers or tool, grasp the tick as close to the surface of the skin as you can. Pull upward, using steady pressure. Avoid twisting or jerking the tick out, as you want to remove the tick in one smooth motion. As you are pulling upward, it is important not to squeeze too hard or puncture the body of the tick. Doing this will release any organisms it might be carrying and will cause you to have greater chance of infection.


Cleaning Up


After you have pulled the tick out, inspect it and see if it is whole. Often, if they do break during removal, you will see small pieces of the mouth or head are missing. Put the tick in a secure container and save it. If the recipient of the bite becomes ill, the doctor will need to test the tick to see what type of disease it was carrying.


Look at the wound, check to make sure it is clear of all pieces of the tick. If you still see pieces embedded, use your tweezers to remove them. Try not to break any more of the skin surface than necessary to remove all of the tick. Wash and disinfect the puncture wound, then do the same with your own hands. Always wash your hands after removing a tick to protect yourself.


Symptoms to Watch


Since ticks are known carriers of certain diseases, it is important to watch for symptoms that might indicate infection. This includes rash, fever, stiff neck, muscle aches, joint pain, or flu-like symptoms. The person bit by the tick, as well as the one who removed it, are at risk. If any symptoms appear, seek medical help. Make sure to remove ticks as soon as possible.

Going to the emergency room with your child is no fun, and it's often quite chaotic and stressful; however, there are a few things you can do ahead of time to decrease frustration levels and possibly shorten your wait time. The following tips will help you better prepare for and survive an emergency room visit.








Instructions


1. Dress appropriately for the occasion. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Emergency room visits can be quite long, and usually aren't the most comfortable.


2. Be patient. There will probably be many other patients waiting to be seen at the same time you are. Constantly going up to the check-in window and asking "how much longer" will probably not get you in any sooner. It's best to bring an MP3 player or iPod, a hand-held game device or a book to keep busy while you're in the waiting area.


3. Have your information ready when you are called. Promptly fill out any forms that you are given upon check-in. Be ready to explain all of your child's symptoms and past medical history.


4. Have your current insurance card and proper identification ready. The hospital staff will need to know what insurance coverage you have, so they know who to send the bill to. Also, if you have a card that has an expired date on it that was renewed over the phone, remember to tell the insurance person what month you renewed it.


5. Know the current medications and dosages that your child is taking. This can make a big difference as to how your child is medically cared for. If you can't remember all of the medications, write them down on a piece of paper and bring it with you.

4. Assume a seated position. Begin breathing through your nose, focusing on the air entering your nostrils and passing through your nasal passages. This begins stimulating your energy system and calming you.


5. Close your right nostril with your thumb, slowly inhaling through the left nostril, counting to four. Close the left nostril (keeping the right one closed too) and hold your breath for a count of 16. Release your right nostril (keeping the left one closed) and exhale out of the right nostril. Inhale through the left nostril, close the right nostril and hold the breath for a count of 16.


6. Repeat this alternating breath for four to five breaths on each side to provide energy to your aura and relax your body. While alternating your breath, set a prayer intention or say a simple mantra.


7. Visualize a whirling, white fire forming approximately 20 feet above your head. Although such a severe reaction is rare, there have been documented cases of scent causing this reaction.

Regulations For North Carolina Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living in North Carolina


Assisted living is an option for elderly and mildly physically impaired adults who do not require extensive or specialized care to live in the community of their choice within a cost-effective, home-like setting. These facilities offer around the clock support services and individual assistance, as well as structured daily living activities. In North Carolina, there are three levels of assisted living: family care homes, adult care homes and independent retirement homes.


Administrator


The Assisted Living Administrator Act (G.S. §§ 90-288.10 et. seq.) provides the framework for anyone wishing to provide assisted living services in North Carolina. The assisted living administrator must be 21 years old with a satisfactory criminal background report, and have successfully completed an associate's degree-level education, or the equivalent; a minimum of 120 hours of residential assisted living coursework; and an examination administered by the Department of Health and Human Services.


Facilities & Residents








Adult care homes are assisted living residence that can accommodate a minimum of seven unrelated residents with at least one daily meal, housekeeping services, and personal care. The residences offer either self-contained or shared bed and bath rooms where residences can come and go pretty much as they please.


Family care homes are adult care homes that service less than seven residents. Independent retirement homes (also called multiunit assisted housing with services) are adult care homes that do not provide 24 hour support services. Neither or those two options require a license. However, registration with the department is required.


Assisted living administrators are prohibited by law from accepting residents who have any combination of the following conditions: ventilator dependency; in need of continuous licensed nursing care; certified by physician that adult care home is inappropriate; and any other medical and functional care need determined by the Medical Care Commission.


Licensing & Inspecting


The annual fee for family care home registration is $315. The annual fee for independent retirement home registration is $350. The annual fee for an adult care home license is $360 plus $17.50 per bed.


Any adult care home can be inspected at any time without prior notice by the department and/or by the county department of social services. Folic Acid Deficiency Symptoms

Folic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin that plays a significant role in cell division and in producing DNA. It is also responsible for maintaining many of the systems of the body, such as the production of red cells, hormones and antibodies, and helps in building muscles and maintaining the nervous system.

Facts


Approximately 2,500 babies are born with a neural tube defect (NTD) in the U.S. each year, and about half of these are caused by the mothers' inadequate folic acid intake.


NTDs are disorders of the development of the brain and spinal cord. The most common is spina bifida, or opening of the spine, and the most serious is anencephaly, which is failure of the brain to develop.


Up to 70 percent of NTDs could be prevented if women consumed 400 micrograms of folic acid each day for at least a month before conception and through the first trimester. (Note: You should limit your folic acid intake to less than 1 mg per day unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.)


Symptoms


In addition to the serious impact of folic acid deficiency to the fetus during its development, folic acid deficiency also can result in anemia, which can lead to weakness, fatigue, palpitations, diarrhea, pallor, forgetfulness and nausea.


Other symptoms of folic acid deficiency include headache, irritability, shortness of breath, heart failure, pain and a lack of oxygen to the tissue.


Folic Acid Food Fortification Program (FAFFP)

To prevent folic acid deficiency, you should include leafy, dark green vegetables, berries, citrus fruits or fortified breakfast cereals in your daily diet or take a vitamin supplement that contains folic acid.

Signs & Symptoms Of Lymphoma In Infant

Lymphoma is one of the most common types of cancer found in infants and children. The signs and symptoms of lymphoma in infants are distinct and should be examined by a doctor. There are two types of lymphoma: Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is more likely to affect infants and younger children, while Hodgkin's lymphoma is more likely in adolescents and adults. Both types of cancer affect the lymph system.








Enlarged Lymph Nodes


According to the American Cancer Society one of the primary symptoms of lymphoma in infants is enlargement of the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are located just under the skin in the underarms, both sides of the throat, the groin, and the abdomen. In some cases, swelling of those nodes may indicate any number of infections, but as lymphoma tumors grow and increase in size, the lymph nodes may also become swollen and enlarge.


Abdominal Swelling


If lymphoma is growing in an infant's abdominal cavity, it may become swollen and tender to the touch. The American Cancer Society states that if the tumors are growing in the gastrointestinal system, the intestines can become blocked and problems with eating and eliminating wastes can occur. Nausea and vomiting can also occur as the gastric system is affected. That can be of special concern to infants because they may not get sufficient nourishment.


SVC Syndrome


One of the places where lymphoma cancers can grow is in the chest. According to the American Cancer Society, as the tumors grow in the lymph glands located in the chest near the collar bone, they may press on the superior vena cava (SVC). The SVC is the major artery that runs from the heart and supplies blood to the arms and head. As the tumor presses against the SVC, it may restrict blood flow. As a result, infants can develop a red-blue tinge in their faces and arms may become swollen. SVC syndrome is extremely serious and should be treated immediately.


Breathing Problems


Another common symptom of lymphoma in infants is breathing problems. The American Cancer Society indicates that as lymphoma tumors grow in the lymph nodes of the throat, neck and upper chest, they may press against the trachea and lungs. That can create breathing difficulty for infants. Coughing, shortness of breath and problems inhaling can all be problems if lymphoma is growing in the thymus, which is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the throat near the thyroid gland.


Generalized Symptoms


There are also a number of generalized signs and symptoms of lymphoma in infants that parents should be aware of. Those include fevers, sweating, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Although those symptoms can be attributed to many other illnesses in infants, when they occur in combination with any lymph node swelling, tenderness of the abdomen or problems breathing, a consultation with a pediatrician is in order, particularly if the infant also has swollen arms and/or has a face that appears reddish-blue.

In today's world everyone is talking about green living. While the emissions from cows do more harm to the environment than all of the people, cars, and factories on earth, we still need to do our part to protect the environment. We need to do everything that we can to insure the best future of our planet for generations to come.

1. Change your incandescent light bulbs with more energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. If every home in America replaced just one light bulb with the compact fluorescent light bulb, enough energy would be saved to light more than 3 million homes for a year! Imagine what would happen if we all replaced the five most used light bulbs in our homes with the compact fluorescent light bulbs. While these bulbs do cost more than standard incandescent light bulbs, the energy savings, and reduced impact on the environment are well worth the extra money. Plus, they last longer than standard light bulbs, which in the long run will actually make them cheaper to use. Also, look for the new LED light bulbs. At the moment they are quite expensive, but they are even more energy efficient than the compact fluorescent light bulbs.


2. Turn off the water. Water is a precious necessity of life, and shouldn't be wasted. There are many ways to conserve water. You have to get out of the bad habit of leaving the water running while you are brushing your teeth. You can waste gallons of water every day by not simply turning the water off. Take a shower rather than a bath. While most people already prefer the shower, we all like to sit in a hot bath every now and then. This is fine, just don't do it daily. It takes far more water to fill the bath tub than it does to take a shower. However, don't take hour long showers either. Once you have bathed turn the water off and get out. Don't worry, you can shower again tomorrow. If you wash your own car don't simply leave the water running while you are soaping up the car. Rinse it quickly to wet it, turn the water off, then apply the soap. Once you have the car lathered up, then you can turn the water back on and rinse it. For watering your lawn and garden do it early in the morning or late at night. Don't water in the heat of the day. A lot of the water will be wasted due to evaporation.


3. Buy energy efficient appliances. When you need new appliances replace your old ones with the most energy efficient ones that you can afford. Look for the energy star label, and the label that shows the energy efficiency of the appliance. Choose the one with the lowest cost to operate. If you are replacing appliances that are still in good working condition you can either donate them or sell them to someone so that they will not go to a landfill. Check your local classifieds if the appliances no longer work. Often you will find ads where people will pay you for your broken appliances. They will in turn fix them and sell them to someone. This will also extend their life, and give someone else many more years of use out of them instead of cluttering the landfill.


4. Keep your vehicle well maintained. This has many benefits, for your vehicle and the environment. Check your owner's manual for the scheduled maintenance for your vehicle. Replace worn out tires and keep them properly inflated, replace spark plugs and spark plug wires when recommended, change the oil regularly, change your air filter often, and keep unnecessary items out of your vehicle. That 50 pound box of books in your trunk is not only an eyesore, it is also costing you gas mileage and money. If you are going to buy a new vehicle consider a hybrid. They are much more efficient than vehicles that only use an internal combustion engine. When you are shopping for a vehicle check the drag coefficient for the vehicles that you are interested in. OK, I see the big question mark over your head. This is simply how aerodynamic the vehicle is. You can do a Google search for "(insert the vehicle year/make/model here) drag coefficient". For example, my 1991 Honda Prelude Si has a drag coefficient of 0.34. This is equal to a Ferrari F40. They are both very aerodynamic vehicles, which helps increase gas mileage. At highway speeds around 60% of the power that you are using to maintain speed is used to overcome the drag from the air that you are pushing through. This increases greatly the faster you go. As you can see, the more aerodynamic the vehicle, the more fuel savings you will see. Of course none of this will matter if you don't take your lead foot off of the pedal. The faster you drive, the more fuel you use.

Tick Fever In Humans

Tick fever is caused by a bacteria in the saliva of the tick that infects a person during a bite. There are two kinds of tick fever: Rocky Mountain and Colorado. Rocky Mountain tick fever can be fatal if untreated.


Ticks


Ticks are tiny, flat, tear-drop-shaped insects that survive by sucking the blood of other animals. They typically inhabit wooded and grassy areas. Ticks do not crawl onto the body but are picked up when brushed against by shoes or clothing.


Rocky Mountain Fever


Rocky Mountain spotted fever is caused by the Rickettsia rickettsii bacteria and has been found in every state except Maine, Alaska and Hawaii. The disease gets its name from the area in which it was first identified.


Source/Symptoms


Rocky Mountain spotted fever is spread by the American dog tick, the lone-star tick and the deer tick. Symptoms begin three to 12 days after tick bite and include: persistent high fever (lasting two to three weeks), rash covering the body (starting on the arms and legs), deep muscle pain, nausea, chills and severe headache.








Colorado Tick Fever


Colorado tick fever is carried by the Rocky Mountain wood tick and is confined to areas within western states with an elevation above 5,000 feet.


Colorado Tick Fever Symptoms


Symptoms usually appear four to five days after tick bite and include: high fever, pain behind the eyes, severe headache, sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and lethargy.


Treatment


Rocky Mountain Fever must be treated immediately--the high fever temperatures carry a significant risk of kidney failure and death from shock. Treatment typically centers around controlling the symptoms until the bacteria is eliminated by the immune system. Colorado tick fever has no specific treatment, and persons often only need to take a mild pain reliever until symptoms subside.

Early Symptoms Of Mini Strokes







Experiencing a mini stroke, or transient ischemic attack (TIA), can warn you that you are at risk of a more serious stroke and permanent damage. A TIA does not cause brain damage and only lasts for a few minutes; but if you pay attention to its symptoms, you can forestall a more serious event.


Early Mini Stroke Defined


A mini stroke is also known as a transient ischemic attack, or a TIA. Experiencing a TIA indicates that you are at risk for a much larger, more serious stroke; if you realize that the occurrence of TIA symptoms should be treated as a warning, you can avoid a repeat TIA or even mitigate the risk of a more serious stroke. Effects from a TIA are short-lived and temporary; but it is very important for you to seek immediate medical attention if you experience one--the risk of brain damage after a TIA is slight, but the chance of brain damage from a larger stroke is much higher.


Symptoms


The cause of a TIA is a blood clot in an artery, depriving a part of the brain of the blood it requires. This results in symptoms that include sudden, severe headache (as in a stroke), double vision, dizziness, weakness and trouble walking. If you ignore these symptoms, you are at risk of suffering a larger, more significant stroke within a year, according to the American Heart Association.


Symptoms, Continued


Additional symptoms of TIA include sudden speech problems, such as slurred speech, confusion and forgetfulness. Another TIA symptom is sudden numbness in the face, leg or arm. This weakness may only be on one side of the body.








Symptom Significance


While a TIA is not a good sign, it is a way the body warns you that you are at increased risk of a larger stroke. While this more serious stroke won't happen immediately, it is likely to happen, usually within a year of the TIA's occurrence; you are most at risk of a stroke within a few days to a few weeks after experiencing a TIA. If you receive medical attention after the first TIA, you will reduce your risk of a more serious stroke and can avoid the permanent effects of stroke, such as loss of speech and paralysis. More importantly, you will reduce the risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.


Medical Intervention


Now that your body has given you a warning of your risk for stroke, you can discuss your symptoms with your doctor and undergo testing (including blood work). If your test results indicate that you suffer from risk factors that could contribute to a larger stroke, your doctor may prescribe warfarin (Coumadin) or heparin to prevent blood clots; drugs that prevent platelets from clumping together, such as Plavix or Ticlid, may also be recommended. Your doctor will prescribe medications to reduce cholesterol and/or blood pressure, and advise a change in diet that includes adding fresh fruits and vegetables, decreasing fat intake, and avoiding food products with hydrogenated oils, such as margarine, fast food, fried and processed foods. If you smoke, you should stop. It is also advisable to institute a program of regular exercise and start drinking more water.

Get Lice Out Of A Home







Lice are small, wingless insects that feed on blood. Lice can spread quickly from person to person. Lice can be found on areas of the body that include the head and eyelashes. 1. Suck up any fleas.








Vacuum your house daily. Use your vacuum attachments to clean your furniture. Pace close attention to areas where an infected person has sat.


2. Kill adult lice from clothes and bedding.


Wash clothes in hot water in your washing machine. Put the items in your dryer on the hottest setting for 20 minutes, as stated by Kids Health. Alternatively, you can have your linens and clothes dry cleaned.


3. Put any non-washable items into an airtight bag. Leave the items in the bag for up to two weeks.

Save Your Relationship After Abuse

5. Make an appointment with a couples therapist. Professional help is essential to overcome abusive cycles. Habitual responses and behaviors may be hard to change, and a professional can guide the process and teach new ways to relate.








6. Make individual appointments to see a therapist. The victim may need to repair some of the emotional damage from the abuse as well as deal with self-esteem, and the abuser needs to learn coping skills and may also need therapy for anger management and control issues.


7. Keep a daily journal of your feelings and experiences within the relationship and within yourself. Have open and honest discussions with your partner on a regular basis to discuss progress in healing your relationship.


8. Avoid openly blaming each other for pain in the relationship once you have moved past the apology and forgiveness process. It is important that both parties feel able to move forward with a clean slate, otherwise you are likely to isolate each other and be unable to move forward as a couple.

Address The Barriers To Recognizing Substance Abuse Problems In Senior Adults

With the senior population set to grow in the coming decades, mental-health and substance-abuse problems among the elderly are expected to grow as well. Yet little attention has been paid to seniors with alcohol and drug problems. For the individual, admitting the abuse may the first step toward recovery; however, prevention and treatment programs must be properly planned and funded to facilitate that recovery. Developing better awareness of the problem among families, legislators and health-care and social-service professionals means addressing the issue of substance abuse among older adults straight-on.

1. Recognize the seriousness of substance abuse in older adults. Reports estimate that as many as 1 in 6 older Americans has a drinking problem. Those numbers are projected to almost triple before the end of the next decade, yet a lack of knowledge persists as to the extent and seriousness of drug and alcohol problems among the senior population.


2. Look for the signs of alcohol and/or drug abuse. Health-care professionals play a major role, as physical exams often reveal related medical problems like high blood pressure and signs of liver damage. Other symptoms may include frequent falls, confusion, poor coordination, headaches and blackouts, which can be the result of mixing alcohol and medication. Sleep problems, depression, irritability and fatigue are additional signs of misusing medication.


3. Educate health-care providers. Medical conditions like depression, heart disease, diabetes and injuries from falls, while often found in seniors who have substance abuse problems, are common among the senior population in general. Physicians need to develop clear communication with older patients so that age-appropriate doses of medication are prescribed. Doctors need to help seniors understand the implications of possible interactions between alcohol and medication.


4. Discourage stereotypical stigmas related to alcohol and drug abuse. Don't be judgmental when talking to the person with the problem, but rather encourage him to seek the help he needs. Although this can be a sensitive issue to approach, research suggests that the body's rate of metabolism decreases with age, which means that even moderate use of alcohol can have serious medical consequences for an older adult with decreased tolerance for drugs and alcohol. Caregivers and health professionals must consider that prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications can take longer to leave an older person's system, often changing how these substances affect the body.


5. Increase support for caregivers. Whether caregivers include family members or hired home-care aides or nurses, they need to be able to recognize the signs of substance misuse or abuse. Medication management should be an essential part of education for caregivers. Not taking medications correctly can have serious health consequences, which makes it more important to develop programs that focus on effective prevention, intervention and treatment.

Personal Identifying Information


Applying for a medical card can be a daunting process with a large volume of information required in order to complete an application. Control Restless Leg Syndrome

Find ways to control your RLS by talking with your doctor.


Restless leg syndrome (RLS or nocturnal myoclonus) is a condition that causes you to feel as if you need to move your legs. An attack of restless leg may also include other sensations such as pain, tingling and feeling as if something is crawling under the skin of your legs. RLS occurs most often in middle-aged and older adults, and the cause is not typically known. Because the syndrome most often occurs when you lie down at night, making sleep difficult, or when you've been sitting for long periods, you can explore ways of controlling the condition.


Substances to Avoid








You may be vulnerable to RLS as an inherited condition, which means you'll need to avoid caffeinated beverages such as sodas and coffee. Steer clear of alcoholic beverages, even though the link between RLS and these beverages is not known. If you smoke or use smokeless tobacco, try to cut down on your use or eliminate your habit completely.


Good Health Habits


Exercise might be helpful. Leg stretches, running in place, walking or riding a bicycle can help to bring your RLS symptoms under control. Begin by adding a short exercise session in the morning and monitor your symptoms. If you notice an improvement, gradually add gentle exercise in the evening. Get sufficient sleep every night; while RLS can disturb your sleep, if you begin practicing additional good health habits, it may become easier for you to sleep through the night.


Stress Reduction


You live with stress every day, but if your stress levels are too high, they can exacerbate your symptoms of RLS. Identify your stressors and reduce them as much as possible. Soak in a warm, but not a hot, bath, which may help you relax sufficiently so you can sleep without feeling the pain or crawling sensations. Massage your calves and legs to help reduce any pain you may be experiencing. Occupy your mind with brain games such as Sudoku, crossword puzzles and word scramble puzzles. When you keep your mind active, you have less time to dwell on your particular RLS symptoms.


Effective Prescription Medications


Prescription medications with sedative or hypnotic effects can reduce your brain's messages to the nerves in your legs. Other medications that work to increase levels of dopamine in your brain may also help. If your RLS symptoms include pain in your legs, prescription pain medications may help to control your symptoms. Depending on your particular case, anti-seizure medications might help treat your symptoms.


Behavioral Treatments


If you do not want to rely on prescription medications, ask your doctor about behavioral therapy. Discuss the possibility of undergoing biofeedback or relaxation therapy. By using non-medication therapies, you may be able to help yourself relax the nerves in your legs, which will help reduce the symptoms.
