What Do Ph Testing Strips Measure

PH is a standard measurement of a solution's acidity or basicity. A baseline, neutral pH is 7; anything rated above a 7 is basic, and anything below a 7 is acidic. PH can be easily measured using pH testing strips. PH measurement strips are used in a variety of settings, both professionally and personally.

History

PH was first introduced as a measure of acidity and basicity by Soren Peder Lauritz Sorensen in 1909. PH is now a standard measurement scale among the scientific community.

Chemical Definition

PH is, technically, a symbol representing a logarithmic equation of a hydrogen ion's reciprocal concentration in gram atoms per liter.

Testing Strips

PH testing strips are available for pennies a piece. Once an acidic or basic solution comes in contact with the strip, even slightly, the strip delivers a color-coded pH reading and the strip is unusable for future measurement.

Measurement

Though even a small amount of solution can activate a pH testing strip, the most accurate readings require even submersion in the testable solution for several seconds.

Uses

PH testing strips are most commonly used to measure the acidity or basicity of tap water, pool water, fish tank water or other consumer water-based products. PH testing strips are also used in chemistry classrooms and labs.

Rationale

Testing is necessary to ensure a relatively neutral water-borne environment; overly basic or acidic water can harm aquatic life, irritate the skin or cause harm when ingested. Many consumer testing strips have additional color-coded indicators to test for chlorine or other water-borne chemicals.

Treat Legs With Lomi Lomi Massage

Lomi lomi is the Hawaiian term for masseuse. It is a form of massage where the practitioner uses hands, forearms, elbows, thumbs and other body parts to provide their client a unique healing experience. Treating the legs with lomi lomi massage stimulates the circulatory, nervous and lymphatic systems and leaves the recipient relaxed and revitalized.

Instructions

1. Place the recipient face down on a flat, comfortable surface. Help him relax by bending the left leg back and forth at the knee, gently rotating the left ankle and massaging and stretching the leg and hip muscles with your hands.

2. Apply long, even strokes with the sides of your arms from the lower hip to the calf. Work your way to the bottom of the foot, back up the leg and back down again.

3. Strive to leave your arms connected to the surface of the recipient's body as you continue the strokes back to the knee. Use your arm and elbow to continue up to the hip and back down to the foot in one long fluid movement, applying pressure to the foot, then around the foot and back up the leg.

4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 with the right leg.

5. Instruct the recipient to turn over and do the front of her legs in the same fashion. When treating legs with a lomi lomi massage, alternating long and short strokes toward the end leaves the recipient refreshed.

Pros & Cons Of Lumineers

Few people are born with a perfect smile, although many desire one. It's impossible for most people to achieve the smile of their dreams through personal maintenance and cleaning, so many turn to cosmetic dentistry. There are a number of procedures a dentist can perform to improve a patient's smile, but those in the market for a quick, effective and painless procedure are often guided toward Lumineers.

History

Cosmetic dental procedures require a multitude of visits to a dentist's or orthodontist's office, and often a good deal of pain. Things like braces and traditional porcelain veneers were praised for their results but often dreaded for the path to them. Lumineers were developed to achieve the same perfect smile as traditional veneers, but to do so with as little pain and in as few visits as possible.

Cost

The price of the actual Lumineer often sounds high, at anywhere from around $750 to $1,500 a tooth, depending upon the specifics of each case, But the total of the overall procedure is usually comparable to more traditional porcelain veneers because there are fewer visits required and the procedure is much less labor-intensive. In terms of price, the amount of time and the results achieved between Lumineers and other cosmetic procedures is often considered well-worth the investment.

Results

Lumineers are one of the only cosmetic dentistry applications that can correct uneven, broken and discolored teeth both quickly and painlessly. Dramatic results occur more rapidly than with just about any other dental procedure, and if cared for properly, Lumineers can help keep a smile perfect for several years.

Warning

Though the procedure for installing Lumineers is often quick and easy, it's best to look for a dental practitioner who has a good deal of experience with the installation process. Lumineers are thinner than traditional porcelain veneers, which makes them more fragile. One of the best ways to prevent problems with your new smile is to ensure that they are installed properly by a trained and highly qualified professional.

Durability

One of the main concerns with Lumineers is their potential to crack or become damaged. Lumineers can last a long time, but even when cared for properly, there is always the potential for damage. If your Lumineers become damaged and need to be replaced, there is really no way to repair them, which can end up being very costly. The attachment to the existing tooth may also become loose and cause the Lumineer to break free, but if the Lumineer isn't damaged in the process, it can often be reattached

Gamma Radiation Treatment For Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells lining the cervix. The National Cancer Institute reports that cervical cancer is one of the most common cancer forms affecting females. Despite no complete cure, various treatment forms are available including gamma radiation to control the cancer cell division.

Features of Gamma Radiation

The gamma radiation treatment method involves irradiating the cancer cells with high-energy gamma rays in order to destroy and kill the malignant cells and hence avert their subsequent metastasis within the body.

Time Frame

Time frame for gamma radiation differs from patient to patient; however, in most cases you might be exposed to the radiation regularly for two or three months.

Advantages

Gamma radiation is beneficial particularly to older women affected with cervical cancer and to those who are unable to undergo surgery because of heart ailments and other medical conditions.

Side Effects

Hair loss, appetite loss, skin rashes and irritations and fatigue are some of the side effects you might experience after undergoing gamma radiation.

Precautions

Doctors advise minimizing exposure to sun radiation and environmental pollutants while undergoing gamma radiation therapy.

What Eat With Colitis

A common question asked by anyone that is diagnosed with ulcerative colitis is "Is there a special diet that I can go on to lesson the severity of or completely remove my symptoms?" If you are wondering if there is a diet that will cure ulcerative colitis, the answer, unfortunately, is no. However, a healthy diet that is tailored to your personal needs can be beneficial in managing colitis symptoms.

Pay Attention to Your Heart

A good barometer to use to determine if something you're eating is good for your colon is asking yourself: "Is this good for my heart?" Foods that are high in cholesterol and saturated fats have a negative impact on our hearts and overall health. The same is true when you are considering your dietary needs in regard to colitis. Add lean proteins to your diet, like fish and poultry, and remove fatty foods like pizza and potato chips.

Alcohol Consumption

Anyone who has ulcerative colitis and goes out for a night of heavy drinking can tell you that the recovery process the following day is worse than any hangover you could have remembered prior to being diagnosed. Symptoms obviously vary, but as a general rule, consuming alcohol will have a negative effect on colitis. If you are currently in remission it can cause a flare up and if you are not in remission than it will worsen your current symptoms. Gauge how your body responds when you drink to determine which amount is right for you. A couple of glasses of wine shouldn't be an issue, a bottle of wine most likely will.

Dairy

While lactose intolerance is not caused by ulcerative colitis, it is common to have issues with rich dairy products. Cheese pizza, that glass of whole milk, Philly cheese steak--these items can reek havoc on your colitis. Again, the best test patient for your case of colitis is you. If you find that you have a moderate to severe issue with dairy products, then you will have to limit your intake accordingly. Just remember that there are essential nutrients in dairy and if you are going to seriously limit the amount of dairy you consume, invest in some suppliants.

It's All About Texture

Colitis is essentially ulcers in the rectum and colon. Ulcers are open sores, so that handful of peanuts you are about to ingest might not be the best idea. Many individuals with colitis have difficulty digesting rough foods. These can include raw vegetables. Since vegetables are crucial to a well balanced diet, cook them to see if this alleviates any of the symptoms. Otherwise, find a good multivitamin that will replace any of the nutrients that you are at a risk of losing from consuming either a limited amount or no vegetables during the day.

Flare-Ups

If you are experiencing a flare-up related to a certain item of food or drink, cut that item out of your diet until you are able to get your ulcerative colitis back under control. Remember that due to your colitis you are at risk of malnutrition, anemia, and dehydration. Keeping a careful eye on your food intake according to a well balanced diet is important to healthy living. Ask your physician what supplements you should take, if any, and if you should visit a dietary specialist to ensure that you are eating healthy and staying strong.

Oil To Dry Powdered Milk To Make Whole Milk

Use powdered milk and oil to substitute for whole milk in recipes.

Powdered milk is convenient for its low price and long shelf life. One of the processes in making powdered milk removes almost all the milk fat before it is powdered. This makes powdered milk a weak substitute for cooking and baking recipes that require whole milk. The milk fat gives recipes (baked items, especially) a certain consistency that cannot be found without fat. If you are out of whole milk and in a bind, you can substitute powdered milk for whole milk by adding oil.

Instructions

1. Determine the amount of milk you need to make. For this example, use 1 standard cup.

2. Combine 1 cup water with 1/3 cup powdered milk. Stir the ingredients together well to dissolve all the powdered milk. Use a blender or mixer for best results.

3. Add 1 tbsp. oil after the powdered-milk mixture is well blended. Mix or blend the mixture thoroughly. The oil replaces the amount of fat removed from the milk during the drying process. Use your whole-milk substitute for baking and cooking.

Acupressure Points To Prevent Crying

Feelings of sadness and hopelessness followed by frequent crying spells are defined by familydoctor.org as being symptoms of depression. Followers of ancient Chinese medicine believe when you repress your emotions, depression can occur. These same followers also believe when acupressure is performed, blocked energy is released and you become free to examine the problematic feelings you have been facing.

Acupressure

While acupuncture uses needles on parts of your body to heal certain ailments, Acupressure involves using your fingers to press key points on the surface of your skin. Your body has self-curative abilities in that when certain points are pressed, muscle tension is released and blood is circulated throughout your body. Acupressure is safe to perform on yourself and others if you follow the instructions closely.

When you are applying acupressure to any part of your body, you should rub the spot briskly rather than just apply pressure. Choose any one of these following acupressure points. Be sure you are in a comfortable area and sitting or lying in a comfortable position. Always remember to relax when you are applying acupressure to yourself. This is supposed to be a relaxing healing method.

Posterior Summit, One Hundred Meeting Point, Anterior Summit

These acupressure points are all located on the top of your head. You may press, or rub, these points for depression symptoms or to help with headaches or memory lapses. You will begin by locating your One Hundred Meeting Point. This will also be referred to as the middle point. Put your left thumb on top of your left ear and your right thumb on top of your right ear. Carefully move your fingertips toward the top of your head and feel for a hollow spot near the center of your head. That is your middle point. The Posterior Summit is located 1 inch behind the middle point and the Anterior Summit is located 1 inch in front of the middle point. These points make a line on your head. Apply firm pressure to these points with your fingers. Massage these spots and relax your body.

Other Points

Other points worth considering in treating depression with acupressure include the Heavenly Pillar, Kidney Shu and the Will Chamber. The Heavenly Pillar point is located a half-inch from the base of your skull on the muscles bordering your spine. Along with symptoms of depression, applying pressure to this point is said to relieve fatigue and emotional distress. The Kidney Shu is located in your lower back 1 to 2 inches from your spine at waist level and your Will Chamber is located 1 to 2 inches out from your Kidney Shu. Both these points are said by acupressure followers to relieve depression, fatigue and emotional distress.

Home Remedies For Getting Rid Of Acne & Acne Scars

There are several home remedies to help reduce acne.

According to Natural Home Remedies' website, acne is a skin disorder in which action in the hormones, producing excess oils in the skin, leads to the clogging of pores and thus a breakout of acne in the form of white heads, black heads or pimples. While it is common in teenagers, this condition can stay with you for the rest of your life. However, there are common home remedies you can use to help reduce the amount of acne and the number of outbreaks you have.

Change Your Diet

Acne can originate with your diet, especially if the foods you eat consist of greasy, starchy, sugary or fatty foods like chocolate, potato ships, sodas, french fries, ice cream, powdered drinks and various other junk foods. Eating these foods in excess, as many teenagers do, can lead to break-outs of acne. Eating at odd hours, such as late at night, can cause pimples as well. Simply changing your diet and eating healthier foods, such as fruits and vegetables and drinking more water instead of soda or powdered drinks can reduce the amount of acne you have and stop major outbreaks from occurring.

Food as Topical Treatment

While it is good to have healthy food as part of your diet, applying certain foods to your skin can also reduce acne. According to the Natural Home Remedies website, boiling tea bags in water, then mixing the contents with basil and applying to the face can help remove oils from the skin that cause acne. Rubbing orange or lemon peels on the affected area or making a paste from ground nutmeg is another idea you might try to reduce acne. Mint leaves can also be an effective treatment if mashed up and applied topically.

Cold Ice, Cool Cucumber

Rubbing ice on a previously affected area is said to tighten pores and reduce the size and appearance of scars caused by acne. According to Fat Free Kitchen's website, caressing the area with the ice for 10 to15 minutes at a time will severely cut the appearance of these scars. Another way to tighten the pores is by laying slices of cucumber on the face. Cucumbers are naturally absorbent, and as they absorb the oily moisture on your skin, they will release their own juices onto it. This this juice tightens the pores and helps reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Description Of Cancer Adenocarcinoma

Although adenocarcinoma is frequently linked to lung cancer, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) defines adenocarcinoma as cancer that begins in cells that line certain internal organs and that have gland-like (secretory) properties. According to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America these organs include the lungs, breasts, colon, prostate, stomach, pancreas, and cervix.

Types of Adenocarcinoma

The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges four categories of adenocarcinoma. They include acinar (rare salivary gland cancer), papillary (one of several types of sinus) bronchioloalveolar (a relatively uncommon lung cancer). The NIH says bronchioloalveolar a subset of adenocarcinoma )

A fourth type of adenocarcinoma, mucinous adenocarcinoma (carcinomas that are comprised of at least sixty percent mucus) is very aggressive cancer that accounts for approximately 12 percent of all adenocarcinomas.

Adenocarcinoma of the Lungs

The Mayo Clinic says adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer. It typically develops on the external surface of the lung (periphery) and may move into the lymph glands in the lung, the bloodstream and other organs. The American Cancer Society says studies have shown smoking to be the major cause of adenocarcinoma of the lungs.

Symptoms

The signs and symptoms associated with adenocarcinoma cancer can vary significantly, depending on the glandular tissue and internal organs that are affected. Some general symptoms that may occur wherever the malignancy has developed include any type of abnormal bleeding, pain or discomfort that slowly and steadily intensifies. Patients may also experience fatigue and unexplained weight loss.

Treatment

Adenocarcinoma treatment can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and stem cell transplantation. Your doctor may use one method or a combination of methods, depending on the type and location of the cancer, whether the disease has spread, your age and general health, as well as other considerations.

Prognosis

The outlook for adenocarcinoma patients will vary depending on the location and stage of the malignancy. For example, the College of American Pathologists says overall, less than 10 percent of people with primary adenocarcinoma lung cancer survive five years after diagnosis. However when caught and treated in its earliest stage, survival rates over that period of time can be as high as 40 percent.

The NCI says more than 95 percent pancreatic cancers are adenocarcinomas. The overall 5-year relative survival rate was 5.5 percent

Use Shiitake Mushrooms

Shiitake mushrooms are recognized by their smokey, rich flavor and can be found in most grocery stores as either fresh produce or in a can. Shiitake mushrooms originated in Asia, where they have been cultivated for more than 2,000 years, but it has only been in since the mid-1900s that they have been sold commercially. Now, many farms in the United States cultivate them as well. Due to their rich flavor, shiitake mushrooms are a great addition of protein to vegetable stir fry dishes.

Instructions

1. Drizzle oil into the pan or wok, covering the bottom of the pan.

2. Add the broccoli and cauliflower florets to the oil and stir fry for at least 5 minutes.

3. Add the onions, carrots, green bell pepper, and yellow bell pepper to florets and stir fry until all vegetables are tender.

4. Add the mushrooms and ginger to the vegetables and continue to stir fry until the mushrooms are tender.

5. Add cooked rice to the vegetables. Season with salt and pepper.

6. Drizzle soy sauce over the top of the mixture and toss to coat.

Stop Yawning When Singing

Don't think about not yawning; it will likely cause you to yawn.

When you sign, you produce music with your voice by manipulating the tone and rhythm that you produce. Singing can be done for fun--such as singing in the shower or singing karaoke--or it can be done for formal occasions--such as religious gatherings or professional performances. Regardless of the reason, some people run into problems when singing, with one often unmentioned problem being yawning when singing. This is not a sign of being uninterested or tired. Though the true cause for yawning is still not scientifically known, most speculation points to your body trying to take in more oxygen. The yawning can be slowed or even stopped with the use of a few techniques before and while you are singing.

Instructions

1. Breathe deeply for 5 to 10 minutes before you sing. Try to breathe in for 6 seconds, hold this breath for 1 second and then exhale for 4 seconds. Repeating this breath pattern before you sing will help your lungs feel oxygenated and will reduce yawning.

2. Don't think about yawning before or while you are singing. Yawning is contagious, and seeing someone else yawn or even thinking about yawning can make you yawn more frequently.

3. Take more breaths when you sing. This can be difficult if you are holding long notes or singing a fast-paced song, but it will help prevent yawning. Work in more breaths between short breaks in the song. When the song pauses, quickly exhale before breathing in. Exhaling rids your body of old air that doesn't have as much oxygen in it.

4. Breathe deeply between songs. Use the breathing method described in Step 1. Even if you can only fit in three or four breaths in this pattern, it will help.

Make Your Own Soothing Massage Oil

Make Your Own Soothing Massage Oil

A massage can be extra soothing if you make your own massage oil. You can find massage oil recipes for soothing massages, aches and pains, sensual or invigorating massages. Once you know the basics of a massage oil recipe, experiment to find one that suits you best. Here are a few tips to help make your own soothing massage oil.

Instructions

1. Decide on the type of carrier oil you prefer. A carrier oil is the base of the massage oil and dilutes the essential oil. The carrier oil helps your skin absorb the essential oils. The most common carrier oils used are safflower, peanut, olive, canola, grapeseed and sweet almond.

2. Learn about essential oils and their effects. Some essential oils help you relax while others may put you to sleep. Mixing ylang ylang, petitgrain and lavender essential oils with the carrier grapeseed oil will make a great soothing massage oil. Another soothing massage oil recipe you can make contains the essential oils of rosemary, chamomile and rose in a carrier of your choice.

3. Mix the essential oils into the carrier oil by adding just a few drops. Essential oils are highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way when you make your own massage oil. Combine the essential oils with the carrier oil in a container for mixing. Shake the bottle gently to mix the oils together.

4. Store the massage oil in a tightly capped bottle after you make it. Store the massage oil in a cool and dark place. Before using the massage oil, warm it by placing the bottle of massage oil in a container of hot water.

Relieve Sinus Pressure In The Face

Whether from allergies, viral infection or bacterial infection, pressure from sinus congestion is often painful and debilitating. There are several over-the-counter medications designed to break up congestion and relieve pressure, but there are also effective home remedies that relieve the symptoms.

Instructions

The Steam Remedy

1. Fill a large heat safe bowl 1/3 with boiling water.

2. Squeeze half a lemon, 10 drops peppermint oil and 10 drops eucalyptus oil into the boiling water.

3. Hold the face over steaming bowl and cover the head with a large towel, to trap the steam.

4. Inhale deeply, allowing the steam to permeate the sinuses.

5. As the water cools, top it off with more boiling water.

Hot and Cold Compresses

6. Place one of the wash cloths in a large bowl and pour boiling water in the bowl until the wash cloth is covered. Set aside to cool.

7. Fill a 1 quart plastic zipper bag with ice (crushed or small-cubed ice is best).

8. Close the bag and wrap the remaining wash cloth around the outside of the bag.

9. Sit, with head leaning back, and place the ice pack across the pressure areas in the face.

10. When the area goes numb, remove the ice pack, place the ice in the freezer and set the cloth aside.

11. Remove the hot wash cloth from the water and wring until slightly damp.

12. Return to the seated position in Step 6 and place the hot cloth over the pressure areas in the face. If the cloth is too hot, shake it a couple of times to cool it down.

13. When the hot compress cools, return it to the hot water to reheat. If the hot water has gone cold, top it off with more boiling water.

14. Alternate between hot and cold three or four times, ending with the cold pack.

Nasal Irrigation (Neti Pot)

15. Fill a Neti pot with ¼ tsp. salt and 8 oz. warm (straight from the tap is fine).

16. Stand over a sink or large bowl, tilt the head to one side, pointing the nostril upward.

17.Pour half the contents of the Neti pot into the upturned nostril.

18. Lean forward, and let the water drain out of the nose, into the sink.

19. Repeat with the other nostril.

Nasal Irrigation (Bulb Syringe)

20. Mix ¼ tsp. salt and 8 oz warm water in a small cup.

21. Insert the bulb syringe into the cup and draw the salt water into the syringe.

22. Standing over a sink, or similar receptacle, tilt the head to one side, the nostril pointing upward.

23. Gently squeezehalf the contents of the bulb into the upturned nostril.

24. Lean forward, over the receptacle, letting the water drain out of the nose.

25. Repeat with the other nostril.

Control Hiatal Hernia By Dietary And Lifestyle Changes

Sixty million people suffer from hiatal hernia difficulties. These problems occur when a portion of the stomach works into the esophageal area and leaks stomach acid. Hampered digestion and heartburn rear their ugly heads because of Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). Learn to control your hiatal hernia by changing your eating habits and exercising regularly.

Instructions

1. Eat small meals to control the production of stomach acid. The same goes for fatty and spicy foods. Avoid acidic foods and alcohol and wait for three hours after a meal before eating again.

2. Drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine and eat fiber-rich foods, in order to stay regular. Managing what goes into your body helps you control your hiatal hernia.

3. Stop smoking and chewing tobacco, drink alcohol sparingly and get plenty of exercise. These are a few, necessary lifestyle changes that help you control your hiatal hernia.

4. Start a weight loss program in conjunction with your exercise regime. Excess weight is often the reason for discomfort. Weight loss and exercise helps control your symptoms and relieves your discomfort.

5. Alleviate pressure on your stomach area. The hiatal hernia originates from a defect in the diaphragm. Weakened muscles in the diaphragm push part of your stomach back up into the chest area. Avoid lying down shortly after a meal and wearing tight clothing.

Chinese Medicine For Kidney Pain

Pain from kidney stones or other disorders can be excruciating, and while Western medicine offers some good treatment options, others are choosing approaches in favor in the East. For instance, Chinese medicine has its own unique, effective way of treating ailments and diseases.

Qi Stagnation Type

This a treatment option for pain brought on by small kidney stones. Its aim is to promote circulation of the qi (life force) and induce diuresis, which is the increase of urine production by the kidney. By using various herbs and plants, such as rhubarb, radish seeds and pyrrosia leaf, the body is cleaned and the stones dislodged.

Damp Heat Type

This method involves diluting lysimachia, prostate knotweed, Chinese pink herb, talc, phellodendron bark, Cape jasmine fruit, plantago seed, rhubarb and licorice root tip in water and drinking it. This method is best for treating more serious cases, in which the patient sees blood or pus in his urine or has a fever.

Kidney Deficiency Treatment

For weakened kidneys, drinking a mixture of prepared rehmannia root, wolfberry fruit, dogwood fruit, achyranthine root, bighead atractylodes rhizome, eucommia bark, cinnamon bark, pilose Asiabell root, lysimachia and climbing fern spore can help clean and restore strength to the kidneys.

Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture therapy can also aid in relieving kidney pain, as this process releases painkilling endorphins that attack the source of the discomfort.

Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy is also an effective form of Chinese medicine helpful in easing kidney pain. The same acupuncture points are used, though an electrode is used to stimulate the body to speed healing.

The Brain Of An Elephant

About the Brain of an Elephant

The brain of an elephant has been the subject of speculation and study for decades. Because of its large size and seemingly exotic nature, elephants have often been considered anomalies in the animal world. Further study revealed, however, that the animal's brain is highly developed, even rivaling human brain in some aspects.

Features

Elephants rank in the top 10 most intelligent animals in the world. This is mainly due to their capacity for learning and adaptation. The brain of an elephant develops as it grows, incorporating experiences and emotions as part of their development.

This high development is responsible for purposive behavior in elephants and may be the reason why elephants seem to have a very selective but lasting memory. This includes the ability to recognize other elephants even after years of separation and the ability to remember places and images, as exemplified by the existence of elephant graveyards.

Size

The weight of an elephant's brain varies between 3.6 and 5.4 kg., with the largest size going to a bull African elephant. As in the case of humans, elephant brains grow and develop as the animal gets older, from a 35 percent total mass at birth to full size during the teenage years.

The olfactory lobe (which controls the sense of small) and the temporal lobes (connected to hearing) of the brain are particularly developed in elephants, making them extremely sensitive to their environments. The cerebellum, connected to the use of their own trunk, is another highly developed area of the brain of elephants.

Misconceptions

Up until a few decades ago, scientists believe that the size of the brain had much to do with the intelligence of the animal. Traditionally, this meant that males were accepted as more intelligent than females, because their brain size is bigger.

When it comes to elephants, however, it seems that females (which have a smaller brain size) are actually smarter. This may be due to the fact that females grow and develop in herds, while males are often solitary. The interaction helps animals learn from one another and improves memory and social skills.

Geography

There doesn't seem to be any difference in the intelligence level between African and Asian elephants, even though the size of the brain is much larger in the African species.

Expert Insight

Elephants are able to communicate using infrasounds, which are inaudible to humans. Vibrations caused by infrasounds directly affect the brain, communicating signals of distress, fear or excitement much more clearly than the characteristic trumpeting.

Reduce Estrogen Levels

Estrogen is a set of hormones that are essential to female sexual development and childbearing. Very high levels of estrogen, however, may be linked with incidents of breast cancer and uterine fibroids. Reducing high levels of estrogen in your body through diet and exercise can help keep you healthy.

Instructions

1. Have your blood drawn to test your estrogen levels. Ask your doctor to interpret the results for you. Determine how much you should safely try to reduce your estrogen levels.

2. Drink alcohol in moderation. Have 1 to 2 drinks a day. Alcohol in large doses makes it difficult for your liver to function properly as it breaks down estrogen, and it can lead to a high concentration of the hormone in your body.

3. Eliminate or significantly reduce the amount of external estrogen you ingest by buying or growing pesticide-free, organic produce. Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage--all fibrous vegetables--have the added bonus of blocking out "bad" estrogen that is harmful to your health.

4. Limit the amount of dairy products you consume to reduce your estrogen levels. Milk may contain high levels of estrogen when it is produced from cows that are pregnant, and it can cause your levels to rise as well.

5. Include whole grains and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet. Estrogen clings to bile acids that move through your intestines, and the hormone is removed from your body during the digestion process. Fiber binds to the bile acids and encourages the flushing process, thus lowering your estrogen levels.

6. Participate in an exercise program, especially if you are post-menopausal. Regular exercise that elevates your heart rate and makes you sweat can reduce estrogen levels in some women. The workout can also help you maintain a health weight, which can lower estrogen levels as well.

Herbs For Low Progesterone

Progesterone is a hormone produced by the ovaries in women. It is key in normal functioning of the reproductive system. Imbalances of hormones like progesterone can have unpleasant side effects, such as mood swings, infertility and fatigue. During menopause, a woman's body will produce less progesterone. There are herbs available that can help regulate this imbalance.

Dong Quai

Dong quai root has been a component of Chinese medicine for a thousand years. It grows in mountain regions and is a member of the celery family, available in capsule form or as a powder. One recommended treatment involves fresh or dried dong quai brewed as a tea. Take 1 tsp. of the leaf, flower or root and add it to 1 cup of hot water. Cover and steep for 10 to 20 minutes. Drink two to four times daily.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is also known as Greek hay seek or bird's foot and used as a flavoring agent for food. If taken as an herbal supplement, follow the recommended dosage provided with the product. Do not take fenugreek if you have a blood clotting disorder, such as hemophilia, or if you have diabetes. It may affect blood clotting and blood sugar levels. It is available in tablet form or as a powder. Drink a full glass of water when you take fenugreek.

Licorice Root

Licorice root is an herbal supplement used for digestive problems as well as hormone imbalances. It is available as a capsule and powder. It is important when taking licorice as a supplement to follow the dosage instructions provided with the product. Do not take it if you are taking prednisolone or other medicines for hormone control. Don't use if you are taking diuretics or medicine for high blood pressure. The side effects of licorice are somewhat controversial. It is best to check with your physician before using it as a supplement

Maca Root

Maca root purports to increase fertility. It was a staple food for the Andean people because of its affect on fertility. It is available in powder, liquid, tablets or capsules. Dosages vary with the product but most recommend 450 mg, three times a day. People with thyroid conditions should not take maca root.

Warnings

You should not take any herbal supplement without the consent of your doctor. If you see your doctor for any condition, make sure to tell him if you are taking any supplements. Herbal supplements are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Follow the instructions for dosage provided with all products. If you overdose, seek medical help immediately. Be aware of the precautions listed with herbal supplement products to avoid interactions with other drugs.

Use The Drug Celebrex

Celebrex is a medication that is primarily prescribed for the pain associated with arthritis. However, it can also be used to deal with others types of pain like those associated with muscle pulls, broken ribs or bruised bones. Celebrex is a NSAID medication and carries a lot of possible side effects. For that reason, anyone using the drug regularly should make themselves aware of its potential consequences.

Instructions

1. Research NSAID medications and how they are used. Some NSAID drugs like ibuprofen are available over the counter and can be tried without a physician's approval. A physician must prescribe others, including Celebrex.

2. Make an appointment with your doctor to determine if Celebrex might work for your type of pain. He may wish to run tests, including a liver panel, before making a final decision. He will also want to determine if Celebrex could interact with other medications being taken.

3. Learn when the Celebrex is contraindicated. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant or mothers who are breast-feeding. Individuals who have a habit of retaining fluids or those who dehydrate easily are not good candidates for this medication. Since the drug can cause heart attack, stroke, or both, people with heart problems should not take Celebrex. It is also not recommended for those who already have stomach ulcers or a history of intestinal bleeding.

4. Identify the typical side effects of Celebrex. These include, but are not necessarily limited to, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, gas, headache, heartburn, nausea and stomach pain.

5. Take Celebrex only as prescribed by the physician. Taking more medication than is recommended or taking it more often than recommended may lead to any or all of the problems noted in Steps 3, 4 and 5.

6. Take a missed dose of the medication as soon as you remember unless that dose would be too close to the next one. In that case, skip the missed dose and get back on schedule with the next one.

7. Call your doctor right away if you experience any of these symptoms: bloating, bloody stool, bloody vomit, jaundice, rapid weight gain, skin irritation or itching, swelling of the extremities or uncontrollable fatigue.

8. Call the poison control center immediately if you experience any of the symptoms of a Celebrex overdose. These include but are not necessarily limited to blackout, severe stomach pain, shallow or rapid breathing, sluggishness or inability to move the body or vomiting.

9. Go to an emergency room immediately if you experience any of these symptoms: swelling of the facial area or any area of the body; difficulty drawing breath or swallowing, chest tightness or pain or a sudden onset of rash.

10. Submit to periodic testing of liver enzymes, blood, and kidney function to make certain the drug isn't doing any permanent damage to your system. Other tests may also be required based on an individual's medical history.

Using Noni Juice To Cure Hives

Derived from the noni tree, otherwise identified as the Moridina citrifolia tree, is a fruit identified as noni. The latter tree grows in the West Indies, India, parts of the Caribbean, as well as in the South Pacific and Tahiti. The fruit from the tree is appreciated for its healing potentials, particularly in the realm of skin conditions like rashes, acne and hives as well as pain relief.

Consumption

Noni juice, a flavor that is similar to that of the coconut, may deter some individuals from consuming the supplement. It is best consumed when the stomach is empty for ease of absorption and to derive its full nutritional value. The juice comes in different varieties and some beverages are mixed with different fruits for a flavorful effect. This can make the juice more appealing for those who do not appreciate the coconut taste.

Noni juice can help with a variety of negative skin conditions, including hives. The product contains high amounts of Vitamin C, which help to naturally strengthen one's immune system and the juice is loaded with antioxidants that help in repairing and preventing damage to the skin. Noni juice also has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help in reducing the swelling involved in hive formation.

Noni juice supplements can be consumed daily; the recommended dosages are 2 tablespoons per day. Since it is best to consume the juice on an empty stomach, this product should be consumed just before the first meal of the day. The product should be shaken well before it is used to ensure that all of the nutrients are equally dispersed in the bottle and that they have not settled to the bottom. Once the product has been opened, it should remain in a refrigerator to maintain freshness.

Potential Side Effects of Noni Juice Consumption

Consuming Noni juice may have side effects such as bloating, gastrointestinal issues and rashes. A rash can be indicative of an allergic reaction and if this side effect is noted, it is recommended that you cease consuming the product with immediacy. In addition, if you note facial swelling, problems with breathing, a swelling of the tongue or throat, and nausea or vomiting stop using Noni juice and consult your chosen physician at once If side effects are not endangering your health, however, there are methods for reducing the potential side effects associated with Noni Juice consumption.

Minimizing Potential Side Effects

Drinking eight ounces of fresh spring water every day will help to reduce the potential for side effects after consuming Noni juice for hives treatment. Keeping the body hydrated will allow for the body to process the Noni juice effectively and will keep the body flushed of toxins. In a similar fashion, fresh citrus juices like orange juice and lemon juice can help to detoxify the body and reduce potential effects after consuming noni juice too; after consuming noni juice, you will want to drink one to two eight ounce glasses of your preferred citrus drink to reduce side effects and to prevent any potential digestive ailments.

Ayurvedic Herbal Therapy For Various Diseases

Ayurvedic Herbal Therapy for Various Diseases

Ayurveda means "science of life." It is an ancient and holistic approach to wellness. Beginning with the belief that an individual is more than a set of physical symptoms, Ayurveda addresses the person's spiritual, mental, emotional and physical well-being. An ancient Indian science, Ayurveda has become increasingly available in the Western world. With a philosophy that rejects the use of chemical medicines, Ayurveda uses herbal remedies. Herbs, however, are not the sole focus for Ayurvedic healing.

Treatment

Ayurvedic treatment begins with an effort to re-establish the person's harmony with nature. Using natural remedies, Ayurvedic treatments include ridding toxins from the body, reducing or eliminating difficult symptoms and easing tension. Herbs for stress reduction and detoxification may be used along with specific guidance for establishing a spiritual life. Herbal treatments will include herbs that restore balance to the person's Constitution (prakriti) and Life forces (doshas).

Ayurveda Herbs

Referring to the ancient Vedas, from which Ayurveda originates, a practitioner will rely on an array of herbal remedies. Often used in combinations with other natural tonics, proteins and minerals, these herbs help to improve digestions and to promote a healthy immune system. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCAM), Ayurvedic treatments currently include "more than 600 herbal formulas and 250 single plant drugs are included in the 'pharmacy' of Ayurvedic treatments."

I

Functions

According to Ayurveda practice, herbs and other plants are categorized by their functions. Some herbs and compounds are used to heal, while others establish vitality or relieve painful symptoms. Brahmi, for example, promotes healthy brain function. Babool is used for dental hygiene. Acorus calamus treats epilepsy and constipation, among other conditions (see References). Plant-derived treatments are combined with specific ingredients according to Vedic texts.

Ailments

While Ayurveda is considered a viable treatment alternative for every kind of illness, those ailments fall into general categories. Ayurvedic herbal and related therapies seek to remove impurities and resolve their effects on the whole person. This is a primary Ayurvedic approach to disease prevention. Ayurveda also reduces symptoms and promotes resistance to future illness. Finally, the person's mind and spirit must receive attention and healing in order to achieve holistic balance.

Considerations

NCAM advises caution regarding Ayurveda treatments, including herbal therapies. There are concerns in the West and in India about toxicity and potential negative interactions. Among the serious warnings are the potentially harmful levels of lead, mercury and arsenic in many over-the-counter Ayurveda remedies. All of the offenders were manufactured in South Asia (see References). It is urgent that anyone seeking Ayurveda therapy become knowledgeable about these problems. Seek a reputable Ayurveda practitioner.

Select Ayurvedic Pitta Foods

Ayurveda, known as the “science of life” is a holistic alternative health approach that originated in India and is over 5000 years old.According to Ayurveda, people are made up of different combinations of the primary elements of air, fire and water. Corresponding to these are the three “doshas” or health constitutions in a person’s body. These are Pitta (Fire), Vata (Air), and Kapha (Water). Health is achieved through the ongoing balancing of these doshas within the body. When a dosha is out of balance, corresponding health problems can occur.A key ingredient in achieving this balance is diet, and eating foods that help to balance the other doshas. If you are seeking to increase your intake of Pitta foods, here are some helpful steps in evaluating and choosing them.

Instructions

Choosing Foods to Increase Your Pitta

1. Understand food energetics. Each food has a combination of energetics. This means they they have the ability to increase, lower, or have no real effect on any one or more of the three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When selecting a Pitta food, you are looking for those that increase Pitta, and preferably lower Vata and Kapha. If you are using an Ayurvedic guide, food energetics are often denoted as V, P, K. P+ means "increases Pitta."

2. Choose from among the following fruits to help increase your Pitta: Apricots, bananas, sour cherries, grapefruit, lemon, lime, and mango. The cooling and sweeter nature of most fruits tend more to increase Kapha or Vata.

3. Choose from among the following vegetables to help increase your Pitta: Carrots, chilies, hot peppers, corn, eggplant, mustard greens, onions, radishes and turnips. More pungent or spicy vegetables tend to increase Pitta.

4. Choose from among the following grains, legumes and nuts to help increase your Pitta: Buckwheat, millet, peanuts, and Brazil nuts.

5. Decrease consumption of meat, fish and dairy products, all of which tend to be high in Kapha.

6. Decrease your consumption of other foods that are high in Vata and Kapha to help increase your Pitta.

Basil Plants

Basil originated in the hot climates of Asia and the Middle East.

Basil is an essential herb in Italian cuisine. Its distinctive aroma and rich pungent flavor have been prized by cooks for ages. Basil comes in many varieties, including green "sweet" basil, purple basil, lemon basil and Thai basil. Each basil variety has subtle differences in flavor. Basil also is fairly easy to cultivate.

Seeding Basil

Basil is a heat-loving herb that can't tolerate any frost. It does best when planted in full sun in moist but well-drained soil. In cold climates, start seeds indoors about six weeks before the last frost date for your area. When frost danger is past, transplant the basil outdoors so the plants are about 1 foot apart. In warmer climates, seed basil directly into your garden once soil has warmed.. Sow about ¼ inch deep after all danger of frost is past. When seedlings get a few inches tall, thin them so they are about 1 foot apart.

Garden Care

If you want a bountiful basil harvest, don't let your plants flower. Pinch off the center shoot at six weeks, before flowering, to force side shoots. Pinch off flower stalks from the side shoots when they start to develop. This makes for a very bushy plant. In hot climates or in times of scant rainfall, mulch will help ensure a steady soil moisture supply for the basil plants. Basil is generally disease-free, and most common garden pests won't eat it; however, some slugs and snails will eat basil leaves. The biggest threat to basil is an early cold snap, so harvest your plants well before frost threatens.

Harvesting

Basil is a pick-and-replenish herb. It is best when used fresh. You can snip off leaves for cooking or preserving when plants are about 1 foot tall. For preservation, freeze basil by chopping up bunches of freshly picked basil leaves and lightly pressing them into ice cube trays. Fill the tray compartments with water and freeze. Later, pop out the basil ice cubes and put in the freezer in plastic bags. They should be used within 12 months. Dry it by spreading the leaves in a sunny, well-ventilated place for three or four days. When dry, seal in plastic bags.

Using Basil

Basil is both a cooking herb and a medicinal plant, says the University of Vermont Extension Service website. In Italian cooking, it is an essential ingredient in tomato sauces. Mix the finely chopped leaves with olive oil, chopped garlic and parmesan cheese to make pesto sauce. Make basil oil or basil vinegar for flavoring salads by crushing the leaves and steeping them in the oil or vinegar. In folk medicine, basil tea made by steeping a few crushed basil leaves in hot water is used to soothe an upset stomach. Cosmetically, an aromatic bath recipe calls for infusing hot bathwater with a handful of fresh basil leaves.

Be Protected From Air Pollution

Millions of Americans are affected by air pollution. Every year tons of pollutants coming from vehicles, electric power plants, industrial processes, smokestacks and miscellaneous sources in almost every city are poured into the air. Until something is done about it, air pollution will continue to endanger health. And because air pollution is linked with sharp increases in respiratory ailments, it's important to protect yourself. Here are some precautions to take.

Instructions

1. Call your local TV station to find out where you can get reports on air pollution levels, which vary from city to city. Some stations have access to Weather Bug, a fairly new service that gets its information from expert sources on air quality levels and also gives a pollen forecast.

2. Restrict your outdoor activity. Try to avoid strenuous activities on days when air pollution is intense. Keep in mind that the more active you are outdoors, the more breaths you take, and the more pollution will enter your system.

3. Stay indoors as much as possible. Levels of pollutants indoors are generally half those outdoors. In some cities, you can telephone for tape-recorded, hour-by-hour reports on air pollution.

4. Avoid busy streets and expressways where pollutants from auto fumes are heavy, especially if you are taking any type of sedative drug. Auto fumes can increase the drug's tendency to slow your thinking and reflexes, as well as cause dizzy spells.

5. Stay out of smoke-filled rooms and away from others who are smoking.

Folk Remedies For Shingles

Shingles is a painful skin condition most often affecting older people. Shingles appear as red blisters and can affect any part of the body. It may cause an itching or burning sensation which can persist even after the blisters have healed. There is no cure for shingles, although there are many folk remedies believed to relieve the pain of this condition.

Topical Remedies

The pain of shingles can be soothed by applying various creams or oils to the affected area. According to a study in the May/June 2002 issue of "The Clinical Journal of Pain," applying peppermint oil to the affected skin several times daily can help diminish pain. Other soothing topical applications include pure Aloe vera gel, witch hazel, apple cider vinegar and red raspberry tea. A skin mask of baking soda and water, or of Epsom salts and water can be created and applied to the skin. This mask should be allowed to dry before being rinsed away with cool water. Alternatively, baking soda and Epsom salts can be added to cool bath water, which can be soaked in to soothe the skin. Those affected with shingles should repeat these treatments as often as necessary to reduce pain. Any treatment which causes irritation or redness to the skin should be avoided as it could make symptoms worse.

Diet

According to "Prescription for Natural Cures" by Dr. James F. Bach, a proper diet is important for those affected by the pain of shingles. Consuming foods which aid the nervous system can be beneficial to recovery. These foods include those high in B vitamins, such as wheat germ, brewer's yeast, eggs and whole grain foods. Calcium and magnesium help promote healing of damaged nerve endings and can be found in green leafy vegetables. Those suffering from shingles should also eat plenty of green, orange and yellow vegetables which are high in Vitamins A and C and can help speed the skin's recovery. While these foods may aid recovery, there are foods which may aggravate symptoms and extend suffering. Red meat, fried foods, chocolate and carbonated or caffeinated beverages should be avoided.

Stress Relief

A study conducted in 2007 by Michael Irwin, M.D suggested that practicing Tai Chi could lower a person's risk of developing shingles by boosting the immune system. This may be due to the fact that Tai Chi incorporates meditation and relaxation techniques with aerobic activity. Practicing relaxation techniques or receiving stress reduction therapy may help relieve a patients suffering or help them to better cope with the pain. Some people have found pain relief through acupuncture and acupressure treatments.

Home Remedies For Poor Circulation

Poor circulation can lead to numb hands and feet, a feeling of being cold when it isn't, and an overall decreased quality of life. While advanced symptoms of poor circulation should be checked out by a physician to make sure they aren't signs of an underlying condition, there are some things you can try first at home to improve your blood flow. Here are a few home remedies for poor circulation that you can put to work right away.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy--using water to get the blood flowing--is one of the most effective home remedies for poor circulation. Concentrate on taking hot and cold showers, focusing the water on the area most affected by the weak blood flow. By letting very warm water flow over these areas, you can force blood to that area, if only for a brief time. When this happens, switch over to very cold water, which will then send the blood rushing to the internal organs.

Cayenne Spice

Cayenne spice acts as a natural stimulant to the circulatory system. Taking it speeds up the heart rate and sends the blood rushing throughout the body. This not only improves blood flow in the short term, but will strengthen the arteries, meaning that a regular dose of cayenne can actually train the body to improve its circulation on a natural, regular basis.

Exercise

Lack of exercise is the quickest way to compound or even create the problem of poor circulation. When the body exercises, it has no choice but to send the blood flowing throughout the body. When you perform physical activity on a regular basis, it will speed up the metabolism and your blood vessels will permanently open up, even in those extremities where circulation has been poor in the past. Walking, swimming, running ... the choice is yours, but the keys are dedication and keeping your exercise routine regular.

Quit Smoking

Cigarettes are filled with the drug nicotine, which is a leading cause of poor circulation. By quitting the habit, you will take away stress on your heart and lungs, potentially adding years to your life and likely feeling immediate improvement in your circulatory system.

Survive An Ice Storm

An ice storm, like any severe winter storm, threatens the safety of your family and your home. However, with thorough planning, a well-stocked supply of emergency provisions and the guidelines in this article, you and your family will be ready for the storm and weather it in as much comfort as possible.

Instructions

Prepare Yourself for Ice Storms

1. Stock up on batteries, flashlights and candles. Get a battery-powered radio and prepare an alternate source of heat, like a generator or enough wood to supply a wood stove.

2. Store extra clothes and blankets for when power and heat are lost.

3. Stock up on extra food and water. Keep a manual can opener and food that requires little or no cooking unless you have an alternate cooking source like a propane grill or camping stove with plenty of fuel. Keep at least one week's worth of prescription medication on hand.

4. Have a first aid kit, list of emergency numbers and a corded phone within easy reach. Cordless phones do not work when the power is out.

5. Fill up automobile gas tanks and have cash on hand because gas stations and banks may be out of service during an ice storm.

6. Unplug appliances to protect them from bursts of electricity, like the television, stereo, computer and microwave.

Prepare your Home for Ice Storms

7. Install smoke alarms and test their batteries.

8. Properly insulate your home and seal windows and doors with weather-stripping to prevent cold air from leaking in.

9. Install storm windows or wrap windows from inside with plastic to add extra insulation against cold air.

10. Drain water pipes and consider wrapping them with blankets or newspapers to discourage freezing which commonly occurs during an ice storm. Alternately, let them drip but catch the water so that later it can be used for drinking, cooking or washing.

Keep Safe During Ice Storms

11. Turn off all major electric appliances if the power goes out.

12. Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed to conserve cold air and preserve food.

13. Use water sparingly; for example, flush the toilet with leftover cooking or washing water.

14. Eat and drink on a regular basis to stay hydrated and to help regulate you body temperature.

15. Listen to the radio for forecasts, warnings and further instructions regarding the ice storm.

16. Change wet clothing frequently to avoid losing body heat. Seek medical attention if you see any indications of hypothermia or frostbite.

Treatment For Chronic Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in your lower rectum and anus that become inflamed, painful and sometimes bleed. The most common cause is straining to have a bowel movement. Some people have chronic recurrences of hemorrhoids. There are a number of treatments to relieve the symptoms.

Topical Ointments

Topical ointments, creams and suppositories are available over the counter that help to shrink and heal the swollen tissues. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should not use these products for more than one week without the advice of your doctor.

Heat/Cold

Bathing in warm water can help alleviate your symptoms, or you can use a sitz bath (a basin that fits over your toilet) with warm water. The Mayo Clinic indicates that application of cold compresses or ice packs can reduce swelling.

Toilet Tissue

The Mayo Clinic suggests that instead of using dry toilet paper, you should use moist wipes or wet your toilet paper. This keeps your anal area clean and does not irritate tender skin.

Oral Medications

You can take acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) or aspirin for pain relief if necessary.

Prevention

You can prevent hemorrhoid flare-ups by keeping your stools soft. According to the Mayo Clinic, high-fiber foods, plenty of water and other fluids and fiber supplements can help. In addition, you should try not to strain when having a bowel movement, get adequate exercise and avoid sitting or standing for long periods.

Considerations

You should consult your doctor if you continue to have problems with hemorrhoids. You may need surgical treatment to remove your hemorrhoids.

Symptoms Of Lung Candida

Lung candida is also known as fungal pneumonia or opportunistic fungal pneumonia. Candida are a type of yeast that are naturally found in the body. Candida only become a problem once the immune system is weakened or compromised from something like HIV or pregnancy. Candida symptoms are often hard to diagnose.

Symptoms

Lung candida can cause flu- and pneumonia-like symptoms that include cough, fatigue, fever, headache, mucus from coughing, muscle pain and shortness of breath.

No Definite Symptoms

Even though lung candida may produce flu- and pneumonia-like symptoms, there are no definite symptoms of lung candida. A person might never know that he has been infected by the candida. Since most of the symptoms are also symptoms of other illnesses, the candida can go undiagnosed for long periods of time.

Treatments

If the lung candida are detected and diagnosed, then doctors can treat the candida infection with a type of anti-fungal drug.

Diet

Sometimes a diet change can help keep the candida in check. Foods that are high in carbohydrates, caffeine, sugar and yeast help to feed the yeast in your body. If you cut back on those kinds of foods, then the candida will not be able to keep growing in your lungs.

Spreading

Candida yeast are not just found in the lungs. Candida can be found anywhere in the body and can cause other infections as well.

Any care received in a hospital supervised by a licensed health care provider, such as a physician or a dentist, is covered by Florida Medicaid. This includes any supplies necessary for treatment, nursing care, therapies and drugs. Children under 21 have unlimited hospital services, while other populations are limited to $1,500 in hospital services annually.

Medical Services

Provider services are covered by Florida Medicaid. Enrollees may go see one physician a day, in addition to one long-term facility stay per month, one physical per year, and ten prenatal visits. Florida Medicaid will also cover other necessary laboratory and X-ray work.

Dental Services

Florida Medicaid covers some dental care. For children under 21, it includes regular exams, X-rays, preventive services (such as sealants), restorative work, periodontal work, dentures, oral surgery and orthodontic treatment. Adults have access to problem-focused dental work (no preventive care), meaning it covers the work necessary to relieve pain (extractions and the draining of abscesses).

Preventive Services

Florida Medicaid offers some preventive services. The Early and Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment Program is designed to give comprehensive preventive services for children under 21. Medicaid also offers family planning services.

Prescription Drugs

Medicaid recipients must go to a Medicaid-participating pharmacy. Some drugs require prior authorization. Florida Medicaid will pay for most drugs, though brand-name drugs are limited to four per month (except in the case of insulin, diabetic supplies, contraceptives, mental health and HIV antiviral drugs).

Transportation

When commuting to or from a Medicaid-covered service, Medicaid enrollees may have their transportation costs covered. This is limited to those who do not have another family or community member who can drive them.

Case Management

Florida Medicare will pay for up to 86 hours of a mental health case management per month for those who qualify and require these services.

Recognize Symptoms Of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy (also known as CP) is a condition that affects both the brain and muscle movement and control. In most cases, the condition is identified very early, most often within the first 2 years of life.

Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the areas of the brain that control motor movement, as well as posture. In some cases, the damage is caused during gestation; at other times, the damage may occur during the birthing process.

The condition is not inherited, but the risks of cerebral palsy may increase in tandem with congenital deformations that occur during the fetal-development stage, infections to the mother that occur during pregnancy and other medical conditions the mother may experience at the time of pregnancy. Head injuries to infants and toddlers may also cause the condition.

Learning to recognize symptoms of cerebral palsy may help parents seek early and effective treatment for the condition.

Instructions

1. Watch for various symptoms during your child's developmental stages. Different children will often exhibit different symptoms, so pay attention; if you're not sure about something, ask your doctor. For example, an infant who can't seem to suck on a bottle or breast, even after patient coaxing and encouragement, should be examined immediately by your pediatrician.

2. Look at your child's muscle tone. Is it loose and floppy? Most infants and toddlers like to latch onto objects and swing them around. A child with cerebral palsy may have difficulty grasping or holding onto any object.

3. Watch your child as he sleeps or plays. Does he display unusual bodily motions, spasms or tic-like movements? Also watch for uncontrolled body movements when crawling, rolling over or sitting. These may include twitching, swinging, leaning or being unable to place weight or pressure on a leg or arm.

4. Look at your child's eyes. Do they appear normal? Are they crossed? Does one eye seem to wander? Also watch for signs that your child may be experiencing difficulty seeing objects. Occasionally place brightly colored objects in front of your child, and make sure she can follow movements with her eyes. Some children afflicted with cerebral palsy experience difficulty hearing. Make sure your infant or toddler responds to the sound of your voice, or to loud, sudden noises.

5. Watch your child as he begins to walk. It's normal for most toddlers to fall while learning to walk, but pay close attention to the movements of legs and arms while your child is walking. Do you see a limp? Dragging one leg? Stiff arm or leg movements? Notice if your child has difficulty sitting or standing. Does he seem to lose his balance more often than others? When in doubt, check with your pediatrician.
