For some Orthodox Jewish women, life is an immersion in the spiritual experience.


The concepts and practices of Orthodox Jewish tradition are often at odds or even in contrast to expectations found in many secular health care practices. For the health care provider, it is important to understand these cultural emphases in order to enhance communication between the patient and provider, in an effort to improve health care quality. Misunderstandings regarding cultural tradition often adversely impact quality of care and may even put patients at risk, in particular during childbirth. For the Orthodox Jewish woman, child birth is a revered life experience. Health care providers agree that the most important aspect is to listen to the woman's concerns.








The Different Branches of Judaism


Judaism has three main branches -- Reform, Conservatism and Orthodox. All three branches differ in their views toward interpretation of the laws of the scripture, called the halacha, found in the Torah and Talmud. Conservatism views the halacha as divinely inspired, leaving room for flexibility and adaptability according to culture and time. Reform views the halacha as more of a moral code compiled by humans, believing the laws are no longer intended for modern society. Orthodox Jews, however, see the halacha as written by God, just as relevant today as when first recorded, requiring strict adherence. For Orthodox Jews, this means the halacha takes center-stage in all things, and for the most part, life itself is a ritual.


Approaching Care for the Orthodox Jewish Woman


When approaching the subject of health care, this does not mean, however, that all Orthodox Jewish women view everything with the same interpretation. Even among Orthodox Jewish communities, interpretations may vary. Therefore, it is important as a health care provider to discuss with the patient what laws she follows in order to plan health care treatment accordingly. It is important to ask the patient what laws she feels may impact her health care treatment and to discuss alternatives available to the patient. It is very crucial that health care providers do not make biased judgments and assumptions based on how the woman dresses or any other outward appearance, as this may prove misleading.


Integrating Health Care with Orthodox Tradition


It is important to understand that Orthodox Jews follow a tradition steeped in ritual and structure. Such ritual and structures include prayers at certain times of the day; rituals at all meals to include eating kosher meals along with ritual washing of hands and blessings. The Sabbath and Jewish holidays are crucial times dedicated to study, prayers and festive meals in a community setting.


Furthermore, the halacha prescribes a diverse range of laws that impact procreation, genetic testing, menstruation, modesty, contraception, abortion, inducing labor, extensive laws surrounding the Sabbath, laws concerning what is in a Kosher meal and how it is presented to the patient, circumcision of a child and even the naming of a baby. It is crucial for the health care provider to understand how these things impact each and every Orthodox Jewish patient and to integrate a healthcare plan accordingly.


The Importance of the Spiritual Experience


From the perspective of many Orthodox Jews, life is an immersion in the spiritual experience. For the health care provider, this is crucially important and most so surrounding childbirth for the Orthodox Jewish woman. The experience itself and the events surrounding it have an important impact on the religious experience. One of the commands found in the halacha instructs Jews to procreate and laws are spelled out specifically on go about conception and giving birth. Thus the entire experience is infused with spiritual implications. If your cat experiences coughing and wheezing spells without a visible cause, he may be suffering from cat asthma. A formerly healthy cat may develop asthma later in life. Once diagnosed, you can reduce the likelihood of future attacks by making some changes at home. In addition to your veterinarian's care, take steps to rid your home of asthma-inducing triggers.


Function


Cat asthma may be misdiagnosed as chronic bronchitis, as both conditions result in wheezing and respiratory distress. Asthma, however, results from spasms in your cat's lower bronchial tubes, triggered by an allergen, an infection or a parasite. If asthma, caused by an infection, goes untreated, it may result in permanent scaring to your cat's airways. If you have any doubts, see a veterinarian for a diagnosis.


Types


Home care can reduce future cat asthma attacks. Most feline asthma attacks are the result of allergens, dust mites, pollen and other airborne irritants. Keep your cat indoors when outdoor hay fever alerts are high. Consider using a humidifier; air conditioners and central heating units remove moisture from the air and dry out your cat's airways, making an asthma attack more likely.


Effects


Breathing secondhand smoke affects cats as well as people. Take the cigarettes to the front porch where your cat won't breathe in your smoke. Your cat may develop a sensitivity to secondhand smoke at any time, even if it did not bother him before. Clean your house with renewed vigor to remove dust mites that enjoy living in your carpet, upholstery, curtains and fabric. Even a small cloud of dust mites can trigger an asthma attack in your cat. Vacuum daily and make a spray of diluted tea by steeping a black teabag in a cup of water for 5 minutes, before adding 4 cups of cold water and filling a spray bottle. Lightly mist the air and other items in your home, taking care to avoid light-colored fabrics. The tannic acid in black tea kills dust mites.


Considerations


If asthma is a relatively new development in your cat's life, there may be a hidden trigger. Think of recent changes that may be the culprit. New cat litter, a change in laundry detergent, a different household cleaner or dusting product may be triggering your cat's asthma. A new couch, chair, blanket or pillows are suspect if your cat developed asthma symptoms as soon as you brought the new item home. Anything you spray in the air could be a trigger.


Misconceptions


In addition to chronic bronchitis, heartworms, fungal infections and bacterial infections can produce symptoms that mimic asthma. A fur ball or another airway obstruction will make your cat cough and wheeze. Overweight cats are more likely to develop asthma symptoms, so keep your feline slim and trim by feeding him a quality high-protein food.








Potential


Take your cat to the veterinarian immediately if he experiences a full-blown asthma attack. In severe cases, his lower respiratory airways may become so inflamed that breathing ceases. Every attack is potentially life threatening. Home treatment centers on the prevention of future attacks.

What to Do for a Broken Tailbone


Your tailbone, medically known as the coccyx, is the bone at the very end of your spinal column, between your buttocks. A broken tailbone may occur when you fall backward and land on your backside. Pain from a broken tailbone is excruciating, and sitting puts added pressure on the injured area. Broken tailbones, which are rare, can take four to six weeks to heal. Bruising is a more common tailbone injury that heals in only a week or two.


Diagnosis and Medications


See your doctor if you have fallen and experience pain in your tailbone region. Activities such as roller skating, ice skating and skateboarding may all lead to a tailbone injury. Your doctor will likely x-ray the area to confirm a possible break. He may order a prescription pain reliever if your pain is severe, or he may advise you to take an over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and pain. Your doctor may recommend a stool softener to prevent constipation. Straining when using the bathroom will further aggravate the discomfort of a broken tailbone. Drink plenty of fluids and increase your intake of fiber as you heal to avoid constipation. Self-Care


Sitting puts extra pressure on a painful, inflamed tailbone. Sit on a pillow or purchase an inflatable ring from your local drugstore. The pillow or ring will cushion your tailbone area and alleviates pressure.








Lie face down on a bed or couch and apply a cloth-wrapped ice pack to your tailbone area. Do not apply ice packs to bare skin. Leave the ice pack on for 20 to 30 minutes to reduce swelling and inflammation. Sit in a warm-water bath on an inflatable cushion or use a sitz bath to soothe your muscles and reduce pain.


Tailbone Recovery and Injury Prevention


The pain of your broken tailbone should resolve itself within four to six weeks with improvement each day, according to the University of Michigan Health System. You should not have any lasting painful effects from a broken tailbone. If you do, see your doctor; the pain may be radiating from a different area of your body, and you may be feeling referred pain in your tailbone area.


Be careful when walking, especially in high heels--unsteady footwear makes you more liable to fall and injure yourself. Do not run in slippery areas, such as near a pool or on ice, and wear shoes that are slip resistant.

Use Kenacomb Ointment

Use Kenacomb Ointment


Kenacomb is the trade name for an ointment that contains a combination of anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory medicines and is used to treat skin infections. One ingredient, nystatin, is used to treat Candida fungi skin infections such as thrush or candidiasis. Symptoms of such infections include redness, itching, small blisters, skin cracking and scaling. These infections generally occur around the nails or between folds of skin. While application of this ointment is fairly simple, considerations such as any allergies, other medications you may be taking and other health conditions must be taken into account before using the ointment.


Instructions








1. Wash hands thoroughly and apply a thin film of Kenacomb ointment to the affected area. Remember to follow the exact instructions of your doctor or pharmacist for best results.

What To Expect After A Hip Replacement

Hip replacement surgery is done to replace the hip socket with an artificial one, either because of injury or pain from deterioration of the joint. You can expect your recovery from hip replacement surgery to take many months and often up to a year.


Post-Op Recovery


After your surgery you will be moved to a post-operative recovery room for observation for a few hours. If all is going well, you will be moved to your hospital room.








For the first 24 hours after surgery, you may have a special pillow between your legs that keeps your legs apart. The pillow and hips are held in place by body tape to prevent your hip from moving. You will have a catheter in place to catch your urine.


Considerations


Within a day or two your recovery nurses will get you up and walking around with the aid of a walker.


Your stay in the hospital should last anywhere from 3 to 7 days. When you go home, you will need someone to take care of you around the clock for a few weeks.


Common Side Effects


Blood clots in the legs and hip are a common occurrence after hip replacement surgery. To prevent clotting you may need to wear thick elastic socks and take medication. Signs of blood clotting are pain or swelling in your calf, foot, thigh or hip.


Serious Side Effect


Serious joint infection occurs in fewer than 2 percent of the patients that receive a hip replacement, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.


Recovery


Expect to go to physical therapy for many months after your surgery. At home you may feel able to do your daily living activities in approximately 6 weeks. Your doctor will ask you to do a lot of walking to recovery more quickly.


Long Term Effects

Holistic Remedies For Canine Seizures

Mad dog skullcap


If your dog has a seizure, first consult with your vet to determine its cause. Chemical allergies often cause seizures. If tests don't pinpoint a cause, your pet will be diagnosed with epilepsy.


Phenobarbital, a barbiturate, is the drug most often prescribed limit seizures but its potential side effects include lethargy, weight gain and liver damage. For those reasons, some dog owners seek alternative holistic treatments for seizures, regardless of their cause.


Diet


Because some dogs have seizures triggered by chemicals in their food, holistic veterinarian Dr. Allen M. Schoen (See Reference below) recommends preparing your pet's food at home to ensure it's free of preservatives and other additives. If you haven't time to either cook or fix a raw food diet for your dog, look for high-quality kibble free of preservatives, including ethoxyquin, BHT, BHA and BHT.


The Complete Holistic Dog Book (see Resource below) reports that holistic vets have noticed dogs fed food preserved with ethoxyquin developed seizures that stopped when they were give food free of it.


Nutritional Supplements


Adding nutritional supplements to to your dog's food may also reduce the frequency of her seizures. Dr. Schoen favors a combination of the immune-system-boosting antioxidants vitamins E and C and the mineral selenium, and vitamin B6. For a dog of 50 lbs, he suggests giving 400 I.U of vitamin E once daily, 500 mg. of vitamin C twice daily, and 50 mg of vtamin B6 once daily.


Your vet will use your pet's weight to determine the most appropriate dosage for him. Simply crush the tablets and mix them into your pet's food.


Also ask your vet about dimethylglycine. Naturally occurring in meat and grains, it's thought to reduce stress and be helpful in seizure management.


Acupuncture


Acupuncture is the most effective holistic treatment for canine seizures, according to The Complete Holistic Dog Book. You need a holistic vet who will determine the correct acupuncture points by taking your dog's individual history. Find one who practices acupuncture in your area from the list on the American Holistic Veterinary Association website.


Dr. Schoen says some dogs respond to having acupuncture "tacks" placed in their ears with the first office visit. Your dog's seizures may be permanently controlled by this method.


If they aren't, your vet may implant tacks subcutaneously on your pet's head in a process used on five dogs in a University of Pennsylvania study. The treatment allowed medication for three of the dogs to be reduced over the long term.


If neither treatment is successful, your dog may need traditional acupuncture. If so, notes Dr. Schoen, you can expect giving him one weekly session for four to six weeks, tapering off to a single monthly or bi-monthly session indefinitely.








Herbs


A 2004 Laurentian University study found that a mix of mad dog skullcap, jimsonweed, and gelsemium prevented seizures in rats with lithium-induced epilepsy.


If you decide to give them a try, be sure to use "mad dog" and not Chinese skull cap. Its official name is scutellaria lateriflora. Always consult with a holistic vet or trained homeopath before preparing herbs for your pet.

Care For A Dying Elder

Keeping an elder safe and secure is your primary goal at the end of his life.


The often unsettling subject concerning end of life care needs attention for those whose loved ones or patients are getting older and nearing death. Both you and the elder need to determine what actions to take and handle the heavy subject of death. Just remember that throughout the process of dying, the elder needs someone to comfort her in a time that can often be scary and confusing by keeping her surroundings stable and peaceful.


Instructions


1. Determine where to place the elder to gain the most assurance that she will die as comfortably as possible. The most satisfactory of places includes the elder's home, where she can feel calm in her own surroundings. Yet the elder may need more supervision than what can be given at her home, so she may need to be transported to a hospice or nursing home. Just remember that no matter where she stays towards the end of her life that she will need some visits from those she loves, as well as a cozy atmosphere that keeps her at ease.








2. Take care of the elder physically so that he suffers as little as possible towards the end. Keep his prescriptions filled and make sure he gets regular doctors' visits. If the elder stays at his home and you are not a health care professional, you should consider hiring a home health nurse to come and check on the elder and bathe him. Contact doctors if the elder has trouble breathing, can no longer go to the bathroom for over a day, or vomits or coughs up blood multiple times a day. Make sure that he feels comfortable with whomever comes into his home, as you want him to feel safe and secure during his last days.


3. Talk with the elder and keep him company when he feels like it. As HealthInAging.org suggests, people vary in how many people they want to associate with on a day-to-day basis at the end of their lives. If the elder asks to be left alone, give him space. If he seems lonely or upset, give him the comfort and distraction he needs by talking to him about whatever he wants to discuss. Be careful when broaching the subject of death as this may lead the elder to become frightened or angry. Let him bring up the subject to you, instead. When this happens, let the elder discuss his feelings or beliefs. Avoid forcing your spiritual opinions on him. If the elder wishes, allow for a spiritual leader of his choice to visit and discuss whatever is on the elder's mind.


4. Try to remain optimistic throughout the process as you can easily get swept up in grief and negative emotions. Just as the elder may need to discuss death with you, you should feel free to talk about your emotions with another person. Give yourself time to be alone, and remember that you should not feel guilty for doing so.

Skin Brush

Rejuvenate your skin by dry brushing it. Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It's responsible for regulating temperature, eliminating toxins and protecting you from bacteria.Dry brushing your skin removes dead skin cells, promotes skin growth and stimulates your lymph system. The lymphatic system is your body’s main function to eliminate toxins and part of your immune system. Lymph is fluid that bathes the cells, bringing them nutrients and carrying away wastes. This is the main system your body has of removing waste. Much of this waste is excreted through the skin, via sweat and dead cells. Dry brushing keeps lymph moving and prevents your pores from clogging with dead skin, so that toxins may escape.Skin brushing is invigorating and is a healthy habit to develop. Instructions


Skin Brush


1. Buy a good skin brush. One made of soft natural fibers is best. Brushes made with synthetic fibers are OK, but a bit harsher. You can purchase a skin brush at most drug and health food stores, or on the Internet. If you don't have a brush, you can use a rough towel to brush your skin.


2. Start at your feet. Use vigorous circular motions on the tops, sides and bottoms of feet.


3. Move up your legs, using long, sweeping upward strokes. Brush all areas of your legs, including front and back of knees and thighs. Always brush up, to your heart. Brushing away from the heart puts strain on your blood vessels and circulatory system.There's no need to use hard pressure, expect on places where skin is tough, like the heels of your feet. Be gentle, especially on areas where skin is thin, like the breasts or underarms. The first few times you skin brush, it might feel a bit harsh, so just be gentle. Skip genital areas.


4. When you finish brushing your hips and buttocks, move to your hands and arms. Use circular motions and move from your hands, and up your arms. Gently brush underarms. Brush your abdomen, using circular motions. Brush your whole back, using long, upward strokes towards your heart. When you reach your shoulders and neck, brush in light, circular motions and move down towards your heart.


5. Brush your neck, with short, soft strokes. Move to your jaw line, and brush in one stroke, from your ear to your chin. Repeat on other side of your face. Brush your cheeks and forehead with small, gentle circular motions.


6. When you're finished, take a hot shower. Wash your body with soap or a good body wash. Follow the hot shower with a 15 second cold water rinse. The cold rinse will simulate your lymph system and close your pores. After the shower, dry your body and apply a good, vegetable-based oil or lotion. You can use olive or coconut oil or a lotion that is free of harsh chemicals, such as Parabens.

Can Multiple Sclerosis Be Treated With Diet

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, which consists of the brain, the spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Multiple sclerosis affects women twice as often as men. The exact cause of MS is unknown. MS is usually diagnosed in early adulthood, and most cases are diagnosed between ages 20 and 50. However, MS can also occur in adolescence or even early childhood. There are treatments available, but there is no cure for MS.


The Facts


The brain and spinal cord are largely made of nerve cells, or neurons. Neurons consist of a cell body, which receives impulses from other neurons and which produces impulses, and an axon, which carries the impulses to other neurons.


Many neurons have a substance called myelin on their axons. The myelin that surrounds their axons is called a myelin sheath. The immune system of a person who has MS attacks the myelin sheaths on neurons, destroying areas of myelin and producing scars or plaques, which are also called scleroses. The scar tissue is permanent, and damaged neurons cannot be repaired.


Treatments


While there is no cure for MS, there are treatments available. Some treatments for MS can modify the progression of the disease. There are also treatments for exacerbations of MS, or for the symptoms, such as bladder control problems and pain. Rehabilitation programs, such as physical or occupational therapy, can improve balance and mobility for MS sufferers.


Complementary and alternative medicine treatments are also options for MS sufferers. Some examples of complementary treatments are yoga, acupuncture, biofeedback, stress management techniques and special diets.


Diets


According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, there is some evidence that a diet low in saturated fat and high in Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids may be beneficial for some MS sufferers. Research suggests that Omega 3 fatty acids can reduce inflammation, which is the cause of many symptoms in MS. Some recent research suggests that vitamin D may have some benefit for the immune system.


Roy L. Swank, MD, PhD developed a popular diet for MS sufferers. The Swank Diet recommends no red meat for the first year and very limited red meat consumption after that. The diet severely limits saturated fat and limits unsaturated fat intake, recommends high intake of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and recommends only low-fat dairy products and limited consumption of processed foods. The diet also recommends daily supplements of cod liver oil. The Swank Diet echoes many of the guidelines that the CDC and MSDA recommend for healthy eating, and cod liver oil is high in Omega 3 fatty acids. The Swank MS Foundation conducts research on the effectiveness of this diet for MS sufferers, but little research has been done by experts not affiliated with the Swank MS Foundation. Dr. Swank wrote "The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book" with co-author Barbara Brewer Dugan, which includes recipes from the diet plan (see link to the Swank Diet website in Resources).








Montel Williams, a celebrity and former talk-show host who suffers from MS, uses a diet high in whole fruits and vegetables. He feels that this diet, along with regular exercise and relaxation, has helped to significantly reduce his MS symptoms, improve his quality of life and eliminate his need for antidepressant medication. Williams uses a juicer to make the vegetable juices he drinks daily, and his book "Living Well: 21 Days to Transform Your Life, Supercharge Your Health and Feel Spectacular," co-written with William Doyle, includes recipes from his diet plan. Considerations


There are many special diets described on various websites that claim to treat or even cure MS, but there is little or no scientific proof that any of them actually can affect the course or symptoms of the disease. MS specialists recommend the same well-balanced low-fat, high-fiber diet that the CDC recommends for the general population.


When a person with MS considers trying an alternative therapy, such as a special diet, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recommends the following considerations. First, evaluate the treatment by asking what the treatment involves, how and why it is supposed to work, how effective it is, what the risks are and how much it will cost. Second, tell your doctor about any treatment you are considering and anything you are taking, including vitamins, supplements and over-the-counter medications. It is important not to abandon traditional therapy, because these therapies have been studied clinically and approved by the FDA for treatment of MS, while alternative therapies have not. It is best to use alternative therapies as a complement to, rather than instead of, traditional treatment. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society also recommends that you document your experience, so you can decide whether you think a diet or other alternative treatment is helpful to you.


Warning


Some diets that claim to help MS sufferers recommend potentially toxic high doses of vitamins and can actually be dangerous; your doctor can help you make sure that you are not practicing any treatments that may harm you.

Tips

Instructions


Preoperative measures


1. Learn as much as possible about your surgical procedure. Have your doctor explain exactly what the surgical process is and why surgery is necessary. Get a second opinion if you haven't already. Some people get queasy discussing surgery, but many find that they relax as they gain information. If your doctor is not willing to take the time to discuss the procedure with you, find another one. There's a wealth of information online that will help you ask the right questions.


2. Be sure you understand all the risks and benefits of your surgery, as well as potential risks if you choose not to have the procedure done.


3. Discuss timing issues with your doctor: Do you need surgery in the immediate future or can you safely wait a few weeks? How difficult is it to get a surgery date? Assess your work and family schedule, and determine what is the most favorable period given your other commitments.


4. Bring someone with you to presurgical appointments to take notes. If this is impossible, bring a portable tape recorder. You'll hear a lot of information in a very short time, and it can be hard to digest and remember all the medical terms.


5. Ask for preoperative and postdischarge checklists and other materials in writing at this time. Get postoperative prescriptions filled ahead of surgery so you won't have to wait at the pharmacy or send someone out. (And you won't risk having the medication be unavailable.) Taking care of meds now will also give you time to work out any insurance copay issues. Buy dressings, ointments or gauze, and rent special equipment (hospital bed, wheelchair) ahead of time too.


6. Call your health insurance company. Be sure that your operation is covered and preauthorized, and that you're following all the procedures required by the insurance company. You don't want a surprise bill to come in the mail.


7. Collect information about expected recovery time from your doctor, and from friends who have had similar procedures. Visualize life during your recuperation. Will you be able to get around your house and office by yourself or will you need to line up help? Will you be able to drive? Be sure to factor in the effect of medications that may make driving unsafe and possibly illegal.


8. Hire help if necessary. Ask your insurance provider if your treatments or conditions qualify you to have in-home care covered. Set up help with child care and housework as well.


9. Be realistic about how much energy and enthusiasm you will have following surgery. You may not be in the mood for dinner dates, a new work assignment or even movies for a while. Set up and enforce visiting hours (or ask your spouse or friend to act as enforcer) so you can get needed rest.


10. Make arrangements for a ride to and from the hospital, since any surgery requiring anesthesia will render you unable to drive yourself home. Line up a few helpers to be available during your first few days after surgery. You may also need help running errands, picking up prescriptions and driving to follow-up appointments.


11. Choose one trusted person to help you make medical decisions. Listening to a committee of family and friends is likely to be stressful and confusing.


12. Know your rehabilitation and physical therapy plan ahead of time. Commit to following it. Slacking off on your rehab is the surest way to have a botched recovery.


13. Have your financial affairs, your will and all legal documents in good order in case the worst happens. Ask your doctor or a patient advocate at the hospital if you need to complete a durable power of attorney for health-care decisions. See 244 Make a Will and 245 Execute a Power of Attorney.


General precautions


14. Identify yourself by name to your surgeon. This helps ensure that no mistakes are made about your identity and why you're there.


15. Mark your surgery site with an indelible pen. Many hospitals follow this procedure and will ask you to do this as you enter surgery. For example, if the operation is to occur on your left knee, mark a large X on that knee, or follow the surgeon's instructions.


16. Inform the surgical staff completely about medications you are already taking, including nonprescription drugs, herbal supplements, vitamins and the dosages. Also inform them of any allergies. See 289 Organize Medical Records.


17.Have someone stay at the hospital during your surgery. He or she can phone your family and friends as needed, collect information for you and watch your belongings.


18. Do not let the hospital send you home if you don't feel ready. Ask for help from the patient advocate if you feel pressured.

Recognize The Symptoms Of Aphasia

Aphasia is a language disorder that results from damage to the brain from stroke, a tumor, infection or traumatic injury. People with aphasia have difficulty speaking, understanding and, in some cases, reading and writing.


Instructions


Be Aware of These Signs and Changes


1. Listen for difficulty finding words, or anomia. For example, a person with aphasia may not be able to recall the word "blanket," but will ask for "the thing that makes me warm."


2. Note the use of incorrect words, syllables or phrases. This is known as paraphasia. Someone with aphasia may say "evelator" for "elevator," or substitute a related word: "watching radio" instead of "watching television." In some instances, the person says part of the word correctly, such as "ew" for "chew," and you can recognize what she means: "This meat is hard to ew."


3. Be aware of words that are unrecognizable or that do not make sense. This is called neologistic paraphasia.


4. Watch for the use of gestures or the habit of talking about a word. For instance, a person with aphasia who cannot recall the word "earring" may point to her ear and say, "I wear it here."


5. Pay attention to halting or broken sentences. Called agrammatism, this symptom of aphasia is characterized by sentences that contain nouns and verbs, but no articles or prepositions, such as "Man ... door" rather than "There is a man at the door."








6. Monitor long sentences or lengthy statements that do not make sense. Unlike neologistic paraphasia where the words are not actual words, this symptom of aphasia, called jargon, consists of long series of words strung together without meaning.


7. Observe your loved one's comprehension of spoken and written words. A person with aphasia may have particular trouble understanding lengthy or rapid speech. Her ability to absorb what she reads silently or to read aloud correctly may also be affected by aphasia.


8. Keep an eye on your loved one's writing. People with aphasia often write in a pattern that resembles their speech impairment. It's important to recognize the difference between writing that is impaired due to aphasia and writing problems that result from left- or right-handed muscle weakness following a stroke.

Hot flashes are a symptom of perimenopause and menopause and occur in about 80 percent of menopausal women. They can be mild or severe. Some women have little trouble with them, but for others, they interrupt sleep and can be difficult to deal with in personal and work situations. Hot flashes can occur for just a short period during the onset of menopause, or they can last for years. There are some common treatment options available to help you deal with hot flashes.

Understanding Hot Flashes and Triggers


1. Learn what hot flashes are. There is some speculation that hot flashes are caused by changes in circulation; however, the exact cause is still unknown. These symptoms occur when the blood vessels in the face and neck dilate in order to cool. The body may also perspire to help bring down your temperature. A hot flash creates sensations of feeling warm or very hot, and they may or may not be accompanied by sweating and a red flushing in the face and neck. Sometimes a rapid heart beat or chills can also occur.








2. Avoid food triggers. As with many medical conditions, the first step in treatment is taking steps to prevent the symptoms from occurring as much as possible. Some common triggers to avoid are: smoking, alcohol, spicy foods, caffeine, tight clothing and unmanaged stress.


3. Do what you can to prevent hot flashes. Staying away from hot rooms, saunas and hot showers can help. Try keeping your bedroom temperature cooler and using lighter weight sheets and nightgowns. Medications and Natural Remedies

7. Some of the most popular natural remedies include foods high in soy (these foods contain plant estrogens), Black Cohosh, evening primrose oil and flaxseed. These herbal remedies can have side effects of abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea.


Stress Management and Yoga


8. Try a stress management technique. Since stress contributes to many diseases and can make symptoms worse, having a daily practice of reducing stress can help hot flashes and your overall health. Having a hot flash can be upsetting and stressful. Taking time to learn to calm the body when you feel a hot flash happening may reduce its severity. A very basic practice is deep diaphragmatic breathing.


9. Take slow, deep breaths. Take a slow deep breath in through your nose, and let your belly expand. This allows the diaphragm muscle to drop down and the lungs to expand. Then, do a slow deep breath out through your nose, and let the belly relax inwards. This moves the diaphragm muscle up and presses the air out of the lungs.


10. Continue to breathe slowly and deeply, and allow your mind to stay focused on the breath. Try for 15 minutes per day. As this becomes easier, try your breathing when you feel a hot flash starting to happen.


11. Try a modified yoga inversion. Yoga inversions may also be helpful in managing hot flashes. Inverting the body helps to calm the nervous system, and it gives your circulatory and immune systems a chance to rest and not have to pump up against gravity. Typical inversion poses such as headstands and shoulder stands can be dangerous if they are not done correctly. Their practice can also lead to chronic neck and shoulder pain. However, a modified inversion can provide the same benefit while being safer.


12. Lie on the floor on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Lift your hips up, and slide a thick cushion or pile of blankets under your buttocks. (Do not sit on the cushion and then lay back because that can hurt your back.) Bring your knees into your chest, and then lift your feet straight up. Your knees do not have to be straight. Adjust the cushion so that your legs are tipped back, and you do not feel like you have to hold them up.


13. Meditate and relax. Stay here for a few minutes, and take long and slow deep breaths. Combine this with breathing meditation for double the benefit.

1. Define the target audience. Skilled rehab facilities will have several audiences that will all require different marketing plans and techniques. The elderly, hospital discharge planners or social workers and doctor's offices are going to be the top three audiences.


2. Promote your service directly to the elderly, by providing them with a free service. Set a day to visit the local senior center in your area. Take a nurse and do free blood pressure testing for a few hours. Pass out pamphlets and discuss the exceptional services your facility provides. When talking to this audience, focus on care and amenities by talking about your ratio of registered nurses (RN) to patients, how many single rooms you have versus double rooms, when your visiting hours are and if you have salon services available.


3. Inform hospital social workers about your services. Most patient referrals to your facility will come from the social workers or hospital discharge planners, who use a list of skilled rehab facilities to determine a plan while a patient is still hospitalized. Host a free continuing education (CE) event at your facility for social workers, who are required to have a certain number of these units per year; sometimes at a cost. Food can be provided at the event where the social workers can receive the requirement for free and you have the opportunity to pass out information or offer a tour of your skilled rehab facility.


4. Keep in touch with doctor offices and hospitals. Patients scheduled for procedures such as knee or hip replacement surgery, will often seek a referral from the doctor. Increase the chances of repeat business by following up on past referrals.


Pick the top five doctors who give referrals and send a thank-you note, edible arrangement along with a packet of information on your skilled rehab facility.

1. Restore power to an inoperable lift chair. Ensure the circuit breaker box is connected to the electrical outlet. Make sure the external transformer is plugged directly into an electrical outlet.








2. Fix a Pride lift chair that only operates in one direction. Use a cotton swab to remove dust and debris from the toggle switch on the hand control. Flip the toggle switch back and forth to loosen any remaining debris which may be causing an obstruction.


3. Fix inoperable heat and massage features. Check the LED lights on the hand controls; the LED display is not lit, hand-tighten the connection between the hand control and the lift chair. Make sure the the heat and massage units are properly connected to the back of the lift chair.

2. Analyze your aura for muddy colors, excessive colors, swirls in the energy field or imbalances in the seven colors of the aura.


3. Select among the different color therapy techniques to restore balance to your aura. Consider popular choices like exposure to colored light or the placement of gemstones on the "chakras."

7. Locate seven different solid-colored pieces of clothing, scarves or swatches of cloth. Include one color from each of the seven "chakras": red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.


8. Place the red cloth at the bottom of the spine near the coccyx.


9. Place the orange cloth on the pelvis area and the yellow cloth on the solar plexus below the ribs.


10. Place the green cloth over the heart and the blue cloth over the throat.


11. Place the indigo cloth on your brow or forehead and the violet cloth on the crown of your head.


12. Breathe deeply through the nose for five minutes. You may wish to practice creative visualization or meditation while performing this technique.

High Protein & Low Carbohydrate Diet Plans For Hypoglycemia

While the majority of people who have blood sugar problems today are coping with the issue of hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, a substantial number of individuals are living with the exact opposite problem--hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Low blood sugar is just as serious a condition as high blood sugar, although it receives far less attention. As with hyperglycemia, the best treatment for hypoglycemia is adherence to a regulated diet.


Hypoglycemia


When blood sugar is kept chronically low, individuals may experience a number of adverse reactions, such as general confusion, sweating, short temper and headache. The main underlying reasons for the development of hypoglycemia include inefficient glucose metabolism, overabundance of insulin production and a general lack of blood sugar supply. Fortunately, all of these conditions can be regulated by following a tailor-made diet.


Diet for Hypoglycemia


One of the keys to a hypoglycemia diet is to ensure that your body is fed a constant supply of nutrients. So while skipping a meal is generally considered bad for a "normal" person, it is even worse for an individual with hypoglycemia. While dieting with hypoglycemia, no matter what macro-nutrient approach you use, be sure to consume at least five or six small meals daily, eating every two to three hours. A high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet can be used to mitigate the symptoms of hypoglycemia because it can keep blood sugar stable while keeping metabolism high, alleviating many of the common complaints with other diet types, such as lack of satiety and general mood swings. When on a low-carb, high-protein diet, you should strive to consume 30 to 40 percent of your total calories from protein, 20 percent or so from carbs and the remainder from healthy fats.


Keep in mind that a low-carb diet does not mean a no-carb diet; you still need to provide your body with some glucose for day-to-day functioning. In other words, there is no reason to adhere to an ultra low-carb, ketogenic approach such as the Atkins diet plan. Select a more reasonable daily carb limit, between 40 to 75 grams, spaced out evenly among your daily meals. Just be sure to limit your total carb intake per meal to 15 grams or fewer to keep your blood sugar levels constant throughout the day. When making carb choices, your primary target should be vegetables and fruits, with leafy green vegetables taking precedence over everything else because they are your least "carby" source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Other vegetables and fruits run a close second, with whole grains coming in at a distant third because they can cause greater fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Although you will consume ample amounts of protein, choose lean protein sources to minimize consumption of saturated fats; white meats and seafood are best for this purpose. Finally, keep your fat intake largely limited to unsaturated fats, such as certain oils (from olives, fish, coconuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts and sesame) and natural fats (from almonds, walnuts and peanuts, for example). Balancing your diet in this way will ensure optimal results when attempting a low-carb, high-protein diet with hypoglycemia.

Constipation occurs when there is a lack of movement in the large intestine and normal peristalsis is inhibited by fatigue, tension or flaccidity; or when the large intestine increases the amount of water resorption in an effort to prevent dehydration. These conditions leave stools dry, hard and difficult to pass. Use the following shiatsu techniques to alleviate the symptoms of constipation.


Instructions


To Begin With


1. Stimulate elimination by applying steady pressure to the point on the back of your hand at the web between your thumb and index finger. Hold for at least two minutes.


2. Apply firm pressure to the point four finger-widths above the wrist on the back of your forearm to remove stagnation in the bowel.


3. Trigger colon function and relieve constipation and indigestion by applying gentle pressure with your thumb to the point on the outside edge of the crease of your bent elbow.


4. Apply pressure with your thumbs to the point next to your spine between the ninth and tenth ribs to disperse stagnation in the colon.


5. Promote circulation in the bowel by stimulating the point two finger-widths on either side of the spine.








6. Relieve constipation with firm pressure applied to the point three finger-widths below the belly button on the midline of your abdomen. Breathe deeply and feel your abdomen move against the pressure as you inhale. Visualize your breath flowing out as you exhale.


7. Release stagnation in the stomach and aid digestion by applying pressure to the point on the outer lower leg in the muscle between the two leg bones four finger-widths below your kneecap.

8. Lie on the floor on your back with your knees bent and your feet wider than your hips.


9. With the tip of your sternum representing 12:00, apply pressure in a clockwise fashion to all of the hours of the clock.

Change A Dressing

Changing a wound dressing at home requires organization and a sanitary location in which to perform the dressing change. Since dressing changes may be painful with a lot of discomfort for some patients; a quiet private place is ideal away from noisy children and barking dogs. Instructions


Sanitary Location & Organization


1. Gather all the supplies you will need to complete the dressing change including trash bags and latex gloves.


2. Place the supplies on a sterile metal tray covered with white disposable paper towels close to where your patient will be seated for the dressing change.


3. Open all the packages you have laid out carefully and then wash your hands. Put on a pair of latex gloves.


4. Sit your patient down comfortably on a seat in a position that will be convenient for you to achieve a successful dressing change.








5. Gently peel back and remove the old dressing that's covering the wound. If your patient is elderly or thin-skinned, apply rubbing alcohol to the medical tape that’s adhering to the skin and wait for it to penetrate before carefully removing the dressing; tearing of the patient’s skin may occur if this is not practiced before removal of old dressing.


6. Using tweezers, dispose of the used dressing immediately in your trash bag.


7. Examine the wound to look for signs of infection; redness, pus and swelling. Take appropriate action on the infection as needed. Apply a sterile nonstick gauze pad to wound being extremely careful not to cause the patient additional pain while doing this. On top of this dressing, add a sterile gauze pad to absorb any fluids that may leak from the wound as it is healing between dressing changes.


8. Top the two gauze pads with a final sterile dressing and apply medical tape flat around the entire dressing to eliminate bacteria from entering via creases and air pockets. Be certain the dressing and tape is not stretched or tight as this will cause the patient unnecessary pain and discomfort.


9. Discard all used and unsanitary items in the trash bag immediately. Scrub down dressing-change location site and remove and discard your latex gloves. Wash your hands thoroughly.
