What Happens When Your Metabolism Is High

Metabolism is a series of chemical reactions, fueling the body with needed energy to promote biological functions and sustain life. There are two parts of metabolism: catabolism, which breaks down matter, and anabolism, which reassembles matter to produce energy-providing substances for the body. Individuals with a high metabolism experience several physical side effects.

Weight Loss

Individuals with a high metabolism may experience weight loss. As your metabolism increases, your body must find substances to fuel metabolic chemical reactions. Some individuals find that, no matter how much they eat, they cannot give the body enough fuel to perpetuate metabolic reactions fast enough. These individuals therefore experience weight loss as the body uses all the food they consume toward perpetuating metabolic reactions. To gain weight, individuals with a high metabolism engage in high protein and healthy fat diets and increase strength training, such as weight lifting, to build muscle mass.

Body Heat

A side product of some metabolic reactions is heat. When a person has a high metabolism, and metabolic reactions are taking place quickly, more heat is released from the metabolic reactions occurring within the body. Although the amount of heat released in each metabolic reaction is very small, when many reactions are going on quickly and repeatedly, this heat will accumulate and cause a higher body temperature than individuals with normal or slow metabolism. Most individuals with high metabolism become used to increased body heat; however, if it bothers you, you can place cool towels or washcloths on your neck and wrists to feel more comfortable.

Increased Food Consumption

Individuals with high metabolism use fuel to propagate metabolic reactions at a fast rate. Therefore, those with a high metabolism must constantly supply their bodies with food, the fuel source for metabolism. Fish and other heart-healthy oils with Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are important for a healthy diet, as are lean proteins, such as chicken, tofu and beans, and fruits and vegetables.

Natural Lung Cancer Cure Stories

Skeptics are taking a second look at natural cures for lung cancer. The TV news program "60 Minutes" has reported on a viable treatment that uses harmless radio waves and gold particles to kill cancer anywhere in the body. The showed aired Oct. 18, 2009. The Kanzius Machine, named after its inventor John Kanzius, was expected to be in common use within a few years of that date. Natural cancer treatment centers are springing up around the country, and testimonials from their patients abound. Researchers are looking in other directions in hopes of finding a cure for cancer, particulary that which affects the lungs.

Flaxseed Story of 90 Percent Success

Even a biopsy performed to evaluate the type of tumor in one of the lungs can cause a tumor to grow from pea size to the size of a grapefruit in three weeks. Some people simply elect to have the entire lung or lung lobe removed. But others say they've used flaxseed oil, antioxidant concoctions, mushrooms of a certain species and/or asparagus substances, fish oil and other natural essences to heal their lung cancer. Prominent researcher Dr. Johanna Budwig, for example, has plenty of Internet sites contending that her methods of using flaxseed and cottage cheese have cured 90 percent of patients with lung or any type of cancer.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reported as Cure

Terminal lung cancer patients have reported shrinking tumors by 94 percent through ingesting Omega-3 oils, such as fish oils. The chemistry involved is related to how the body heals itself using natural substances to eradicate the cancer cells and build new tissue. Most of these stories are reported openly on the Internet by friends, professors and family members of patients. Most say the are willing to back up their stories, offering before and after CT scans.

Clinics Espouse Quality of Life Vs. Cure

Clinics specializing in both conventional medical treatments and holistic support through natural "medicines" commonly offer better quality of life and extended life rather than cures. Lung cancer typically is terminal within two to five years of diagnosis. But herbs and supplements are used to strengthen the body's natural defenses and enhance the patient's quality of life. Many clinics and people whom they've treated have released books telling of natural cures that worked. Lung cancer patients should approach these stories cautiously, knowing they are not scientifically documented in the same way as conventional drug studies.

Grape Diet Helps Some Tumors

Johanna Brandt, developer of "The Grape Cure," insists the healing powers of grapes in reversing lung and other types of cancer works. Her websites offer testimonials of 100 percent cures from eating grapes. However, there are Internet stories from cancer patients who say they were no better or worse after a couple of months of ingesting high quantities of grapes.

Healing Powers of Alkaline Water

Some manufacturers of water machines that turn water from acidic to alkaline tout the healing power of the water to mitigate almost any type of illness. Lung cancer is listed as an illness that alkaline water can cure. Stories are available in literature accompanying these water machines, but few are documented by medical science. Holistic methods, however, are much harder to scientifically monitor. Lung cancer patients cannot be hurt by drinking alkaline water, eating grapes or taking flaxseed oil, so there's no real reason not to give these so-called cures a try. Moderation is key, however, because any substance whatsoever taken in abnormally large quantites -- even drinking water -- can harm or sometimes even kill you.

Manage Neonatal Hypothyroidism

Neonatal hypothyroidism, also known as congenital hypothyroidism, is a thyroid disorder that shows up at birth or shortly after. It can cause mental deficiency with neurological syndromes such as disorders of stance and gait, stunted growth, and disorders of hearing and speech. The good news is that neonatal hypothyroidism is one of the most treatable causes of mental retardation. Read on for ways to manage neonatal hypothyroidism.

Instructions

1. Prevent some cases of hypothyroidism by correcting iodine deficiency. Since severe iodine deficiency is one of the most common causes of neonatal hypothyroidism, taking steps to prevent it before birth could help in some cases.

2. Watch for symptoms that occur at birth. Poor feeding, hypothermia, and abdominal distension are some signs of neonatal hypothyroidism. Since most hospitals in the United States do T4 screenings to determine thyroid abnormalities at birth, hospital care is important shortly after birth if neonatal hypothyroidism is a possibility.

3. Ask your infant's doctor to screen your baby for thyroid conditions a few weeks after birth if your child fails to gain weight, is constipated, has dry or mottled skin, has an umbilical hernia, sleeps more and is less active than most newborns, or has respiratory distress. Some infants tested at birth don't show hypothyroidism for a few weeks because they're protected for a short time by hormones from their mother. Early detection and treatment is the key to normality for those with neonatal hypothyroidism. Follow up with further serum T4 testing for those with abnormal readings.

4. Ask the doctor about levothyroxine treatment, the most common treatment for neonatal hypothyroidism. Make sure tablets are used, as liquids aren't as stable.

5. Normalize thyroid hormones with thyrosine sodium treatment. Many doctors use thyrosine sodium treatment until growth is completed. Serum T and thyrosine sodium measurements should be evaluated at 2 months and 4 months. Evaluation should be every 1-2 months during the first year of life, every 2-3 months between the ages of 1 and 3, and every 3-12 months until growth is completed. The later the treatment is started, the lower the child's IQ will be, so immediate treatment is important.

6. Ask your doctor about imaging studies. Some doctors do ultrasounds of the thyroid and compare with later ultrasounds.

Make A Birth Chart

Artistic Interpretation of the Zodiac Signs on a Wheel Chart

Astrologists believe that the placement of the stars and planets at the moment of our birth has a strong bearing on our personalities and who we are. In order to counsel people on their strengths and weaknesses, an astrologist will draw up a birth chart in the form of a wheel. The wheel represents the entire sky around the Earth, what can be seen above the horizon and what cannot be seen, below, during the season of your birth.

Instructions

1. Gather information. You must know not only the day and year you were born, you must know the time you were born and the place you were born. All of these factors effect the placement of the stars and planets in relation to you at your birth.

2. Purchase or borrow a sky map. Sky maps, also called planispheres, are paper wheels that allow you to move a map of the stars around to fit a specific date, time and hemisphere. Set the sky map to the date, time and place of your birth. Some sky maps are designed only to help you recognize stars at night, so make sure you are using a more versatile sky map that will allow you to see where heavenly bodies were located at any time of day.

3. Notice where each sign of the zodiac is in the sky at the moment of your birth. Copy the wheel chart in the image. The first six houses (I to VI) are below the horizon, meaning they could not be seen in the sky when you were born. The next six houses (VII to XII) are above the horizon and the six constellations in those houses were above in the sky when your were born. In each of the 12 houses, write the name of the zodiac constellation that was in that position at the moment of your birth.

4. Holding the wheel and the planisphere next to each other, chart where each of the following astrological bodies were in the sky: sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. In the last picture, three circles are shown as an example; you need to chart where all 10 luminaries were.

5. You now have the your basic birth chart. Interpreting the chart is complicated; each house has significance, each zodiac sign has meanings and the relation of the the 10 luminaries to the signs in their houses completes the picture of you. To learn interpret your chart visit a website like astrology.com (see resources), or consult with a professional astrologist.

Cleft Lip & Palate Treatment

According to the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, the most common birth defect in America is the cleft lip and cleft palate, affecting almost 1 in every 600 births. The cleft is formed very early in development--about 7 to 12 weeks--when development of the upper jaw is impaired. Causes of a cleft lip are generally unknown. Although there are significant risks of related birth defects in children born with a cleft lip, the cleft lip itself is repairable through surgical and orthodontic means.

Cleft Types

Different types of cleft lip and palate combinations exist, but the two basic versions are the unilateral--on one side of the child's nose--and the bilateral--on both sides of the child's nose. The three structures that are referred to when discussing a cleft are the lip, the hard (or front) palate and the soft (or rear) palate. It is possible, though uncommon, to have a cleft lip develop alone. Clefts are generally measured by those that include the gum, upper jaw and hard palate and those that extend deeper into the soft palate. Clefts can vary in severity, although bilateral clefts tend to be worse and take more effort to repair successfully. Clefts that extend into the soft palate are likewise more difficult to repair and can leave children unable to swallow, or have difficulty swallowing, breathing and breast-feeding.

Chromosomal Abnormality

A cleft lip and/or palate may be the first visible birth defect in a child who may have other chromosomal abnormalities, including Down syndrome. Some factors doctors look for in ultrasounds to begin to rule out other problems after a cleft lip is detected are developmental weight--fetuses with some chromosomal abnormalities develop much more slowly than otherwise healthy fetuses--a nose bud, a second phalangeal joint in the middle finger and a nuchal fold (neck measurement) that isn't unduly thick. Some parents may opt to have an amniocentesis test done to rule out further abnormalities.

Traditional Surgery

Traditional treatment for a cleft palate begins with a first surgery within the first few months, sometimes even the first few days, of life. This first surgery is to repair the lip, which will apply horizontal pressure to the child's upper jaw and hopefully start to bring the separated bones of the hard palate slightly closer together. Children undergoing traditional treatment require a larger number of surgeries between birth and adolescence. Upwards of a dozen or more surgeries are required to repair the lip, gum, dental work, soft palate and upper jaw, including a particularly difficult bone graft normally scheduled for when the child is about 8 years old. Final surgeries in the late teens will likely include cosmetic surgery to repair the nose.

Nasoalveolar Molding

A newer technique, called nasoalveolar molding developed by Dr. Court Cutting and Dr. Barry Grayson at New York University, combines the molding techniques used in orthodontic work and the latest cosmetic surgical techniques. This combined approach was developed in an attempt to limit the number of surgeries in cleft palate patients in early development. A mold similar to a orthodontic retainer is made for the child within a few days of birth. This mold is used to help reduce any gaps in the bone of the upper jaw and minimize the spaces before the initial surgery is done. This approach takes a bit longer at the outset, but considering the goal of minimizing the amount of corrective work the surgeon has to do, this can be an attractive option for many parents.

Overtreatment

Some of the most emotionally charged issues develop during the hospital stay after a child with a cleft palate is born. Due to the separation in his lip and palate, it is highly unlikely that a child with a cleft will be able to breast-feed successfully. It is possible that some nurses and lactation specialists unfamiliar with cleft palates may insist on mothers trying to breast-feed these children, causing undue stress on both child and mother. Also, some hospitals may insist on children with clefts being treated in NICU centers even though there is no particular intensive care issue that needs to be addressed. According to NYU and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia cleft palate teams, unless the baby has an infection or a heart or respiratory problem, there is no reason a child with a cleft palate should not be treated as any other healthy child postpartum.

Cope After Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure which creates a small stomach by stapling a portion of the stomach and then attaching a part of the small intestine to this pouch. Doctors perform this surgery to restrict food intake so as to promote weight loss in overweight people. To cope after gastric bypass surgery, you need to follow certain changes in lifestyle and diet.

Instructions

1. Plan to spend 2 to 5 weeks recovering from this surgery before resuming your normal activities. Patients stay two to three days in the hospital before going home.

2. Manage any pain or discomfort by taking the medication prescribed by your surgeon. You may feel swelling or soreness of the abdomen. See your doctor if you experience bleeding or signs of infections during the recovery period.

3. Follow the progression diet specified by your doctor. This can be a 12-week plan that consists of gradually increasing food intake from liquid to pureed foods, then proceeding to soft and finally to regular foods.

4. Eat small quantities of food and chew it slowly. Eating too much food or too quickly during a meal can cause dumping syndrome. This condition may cause nausea, vomiting or pain. Drink liquids and eat foods that your stomach can tolerate and incorporate new foods one at a time.

5. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to avoid dehydration. Try to drink liquids between meals as your smaller stomach is unable to hold both water and food in one meal.

6. Prevent a vitamin or mineral deficiency by taking multi-vitamins, calcium, B-12 vitamin and minerals regularly. After gastric bypass surgery, the body has problems absorbing nutrients.

7. Start exercising regularly for added weight loss. Begin by walking a few minutes each day and gradually increase the time length. Implement an exercise program that is appropriate for you by asking your doctor's recommendation. Patients can cope after gastric bypass surgery by incorporating these lifelong changes in eating habits and exercise patterns to successfully maintain weight loss.

First Aid & Cpr Guidelines

When an emergency situation occurs, it is best to be prepared. Learning simple first aid and CPR techniques will decrease chaos at the incident scene and will aid the injured person, many times actually saving the person's life.

First Aid

First aid is the care a person receives as soon as they become injured. First aid can concern a variety of incidents. Bites, bruises, choking, falls, fractures, head injuries, nose bleeds, sprains, scrapes or cuts and unconsciousness are among some of the many types of incidents that require first aid, according to the Mayo Clinic.

In general, it is important to remember some safety techniques to be best equipped to deal with injury situations. Keep a first aid kit in your home, car or workplace at all times. The first aid kit should include a care guide for specific injuries, and according to the National Library of Medicine, it is good practice to read the information that comes with the kit, so you are knowledgeable on use the supplies.

According to the National Library of Medicine, when dealing with scrapes or cuts, you can stop the bleeding by applying pressure. The less blood a person looses, the better chances of recovery.

CPR

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and is a lifesaving technique people use in the event of an emergency, according to the Mayo Clinic. When a person's heartbeat or breathing has ceased, CPR can be used to resuscitate him.

CPR consists of chest compressions as well as mouth-to mouth breathing. A person trained in CPR will provide 30 chest compressions to the person in danger followed by two rescue breaths. Repeat the steps.

According to the Mayo Clinic, if you are not trained in CPR, you can eliminate the rescue breaths and continue with "uninterrupted chest presses," which should be approximately two compressions per second. Continue with the uninterrupted chest compressions until medical help has arrived.

There are important rules to remember during CPR. The acronym "ABC" will help you to remember to A) clear the airway, B) breathe for the person in danger, and C) get the blood to circulate. The Mayo Clinic notes that you should move fast through the first two steps and quickly begin restoring circulation of blood.

If you are alone, begin CPR before calling 911. The Mayo Clinic recommends completing five cycles, or approximately two minutes worth of CPR before calling 911.

Therapy For Brain Trauma

Brain trauma is an injury to the brain that causes brain damage. Brain trauma can disrupt virtually any function. The brain acts as the central processing unit of the body, and injuries can disrupt motor and cognitive function, cause sleepiness, diminish concentration and memory, affect mood, harm sexual function, cause paralysis and even death. Few medications other than progesterone have been found to reduce the effects of brain trauma once it has occurred. However, there are therapies available for brain recovery after the brain trauma.

Progesterone

Progesterone has been used in clinical trials to treat brain traumas. This naturally-occurring hormone is injected into the brain and has been found to reduce incidences of paralysis and damage to cognitive functions. Progesterone works by reducing the inflammation in a brain that has been injured. This hormone must be injected into the brain within six hours of injury. Progesterone is also helpful during a stroke.

Acute care

Acute conditions are conditions in which the brain risks death or severe damage. Treatment after brain trauma focuses on preventing further damage by assisting circulation and respiration. Emergency surgery can be performed to remove blood clots in the brain. Fluid buildup must sometimes be drained using a shunt. Antiseizure medications are used to prevent seizures that can cause additional damage to the brain after the brain trauma.

Subacute care

At subacute levels, patients are stabilized, but must be watched for potential problems such as brain infections and fluid accumulation in the brain. At this point, recovery-based therapy begins in order to help rehabilitate the patient. However, most of the recovery-based therapy begins once the patient has been moved to a chronic care unit.

Chronic care

In the chronic care unit, physical therapy, surgery and medical treatment for pain, seizures and depression are used. When patients are released, therapy often occurs throughout the patient's daily life until full recovery is achieved.

Physical and Occupational Therapy

Physical therapy involves exercises that develop normal physical abilities, while occupational therapy involves exercises that help patients regain skills necessary for daily life such as getting dressed and driving a car. Strength training exercises are used to regain muscles lost through atrophy and also regain lost motor skills. Physical therapists also help patients practice basic skills by guiding their arms and legs. Two of the most common exercises involve climbing up the stairs repeatedly to regain balance and having the patient lie on the floor on her stomach, lifting her arms and legs up off the floor.

Assess Altitude Illness

Assess Altitude Illness

There are three gradations of altitude illness: acute mountain sickness (AMS), high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE).

Instructions

Assess for Mild Altitude Illness (AMS)

1. Look for the following signs and symptoms: headache, nausea, vomiting, malaise, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, shortness of breath on exertion, dry cough escalating to a productive cough, bluish tint around the mouth and in the fingernail beds, swelling of the hands or face.

2. Treat for mild altitude sickness if the person exhibits any of the above symptoms (see "Treat Mild Altitude Illness").

3. Evaluate for signs of severe altitude illness by using the following steps.

Assess for Severe Altitude Illness (HAPE or HACE)

4. Look for signs of mild altitude illness, plus the following signs and symptoms: shortness of breath at rest, fatigue, dizziness, vision disturbances, hallucinations, paralysis or loss of sensation in any part of the body.

5. Have the person walk in a straight line and stand with his feet together and eyes closed: Does he stumble or waver?

6. Take the person's heart and respiratory rate (see "Measure and Record Vital Signs During First Aid" and "Measure and Record Respiratory Rate"). Is either one elevated?

7. Use a stethoscope or put your ear to the person's chest and listen as he takes a deep breath. Do you hear any fluid in the lungs, or is he coughing up any blood?

8. Monitor the person's level of consciousness (see "Assess Level of Consciousness During First Aid"). Is it less than A and O times 4?

9. Treat immediately for severe altitude illness if you answered yes to any of the above questions (see "Treat Severe Altitude Illness").

Rashes

Skin rashes may appear for several different reasons, from diaper irritation to childhood diseases to allergies. Each rash will either run its course if it is due to a childhood disease, or if the rash is acute, it will disappear once the allergen is removed.

Types

Drug or other allergies, such as food allergies, often lead to hives, a red, blotchy rash that moves around to different places on the body. Hives are usually itchy and medical attention should be sought to find the trigger substance causing the problem. Benadryl or the equivalent generic antihistamine may be taken for relief of symptoms. Hives accompanied by shortness of breath, vomiting, heart irregularities, seizure or fever should be seen in the ER immediately.

Diaper rash may cause a red pimply blotchy rash to appear in the diaper area. Careful cleaning, drying and an application of zinc and castor oil cream should see an improvement within hours. Yeast infections cause the same rash as regular diaper rash. However, the rash will not go away using normal diaper rash creams and solutions, and will need special attention.

Features

Childhood illnesses may cause a number of rashes on various parts of the body accompanied by other symptoms. Chickenpox, measles and German measles, most common during childhood, are all diseases that develop rashes. German measles or "Three-day Measles" features a mass of red spots on the upper torso and swollen glands lasting for about three days. German measles is devastating if a pregnant woman comes into contact with an infected person, contracting the disease herself, as the disease may be passed to her baby via her bloodstream causing blindness, deafness and retardation in the unborn fetus. Routine shots are now given to young people to develop immunity to the disease.

Effects

Chickenpox starts with one main red spot with a pustule center that usually leaves a scar. The rash spreads over the entire body and lasts for about 10 days. Topical applications, such as Caladryl or Calamine, may help with the intense itching. Eventually all the scabs fall off and you most likely will never get the disease again in your lifetime. Varicella vaccine is sometimes given to children who have not yet had the disease.

Considerations

A light rash spreading over the upper torso with a fever may signal the beginnings of meningitis, a serious disease in all ages. A trip to the ER is suggested. On suspecting the disease, the doctor will draw fluid from the spine via a spinal tap to be tested in the lab to make a definite diagnosis.

Warning

Contact dermatitis happens almost immediately on having metal touch the skin, or a type of rubber, such as latex or other substance, to which the body isn't compatible. Take away the substance or item that causes the rash and the symptoms will disappear.

Know When To Use Mouthwash After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction recovery depends on your post-operation actions.

Wisdom tooth extraction can be a relatively painless process. Yet, oftentimes people experience complications such as dry sockets after a wisdom tooth extraction. The real key to post-operation healing processes involves allowing your natural healing process to work its magic. Any interference with this process will reduce your chances of a simple wisdom tooth healing process. Mouthwash poses one such serious risk. If you jump the gun on mouthwash rinsing, you will prevent blood clotting and put yourself in harm's way.

Instructions

1. Avoid the temptation of mouthwash. While you may use mouthwash regularly to kill germs and freshen your breath, the very chemicals you have grown to love can hurt you. Using mouthwash, which contains alcohol, will stifle the blood clotting process. You should avoid mouthwash for 14 days after the surgery to minimize your risk of complications. Otherwise, using mouthwash within 24 hours should be avoided at all costs. Failure to adhere to the 24 hour rule will lead to severe burning and pain.

2. Kill the germs in your mouth. Mouthwash does not hold exclusive rights to killing germs and preventing infections. Rather, warm salt water can do the trick. Pour some warm (not hot) salt water into a glass. Add 1 or 2 tbsp. of salt to the water. Mix the water with the spoon. Next, pour a small amount of the saltwater mixture into your mouth. Rinse your mouth with the warm saltwater. Do not rinse as you normally would. Rather, gently rock your head side to side to avoid breaking up the blood clotting process. This will kill germs in your mouth and remove food debris from the extraction sight. You should rinse with warm saltwater at least three times a day. If you really want to kill infections, rinse in the morning, at night and after every meal. You should avoid rinsing with warm saltwater for 24 hours after the extraction. This will give your mouth some time to form natural blood clots.

3. Clean your mouth with your prescription mouthwash. Occasionally, your dentist may prescribe you a special mouthwash containing chlorhexidine. This mouthwash will not disrupt blood clotting. You do not need to use saltwater if you have the prescription mouthwash. Use the mouthwash for only as long as your dentist recommended.

4. Resume the use of mouthwash. After 14 days, you should be ready to use mouthwash again. You can mix the mouthwash with water to ease your way back into the process. Gradually increase the proportion of mouthwash to water until you find yourself back in your normal dental routine.

Remove A Mole With Wart Remover

Removing moles can be a time consuming and expensive task. Moles are best removed by your doctor but the procedure is not always covered by insurance. Unlike warts, removing moles with simple over-the-counter products is not always successful and can be complicated by pain and infection. The difference? Warts live on the skin, while moles have a "root" which needs to be removed as well. As tempting as it may seem, you cannot successfully remove a mole using something such as Compound W, which is an inexpensive wart remover. People who have tried this have experienced pain, burning, and a whitish appearance to their mole, without any real "removal." Scarring and infection is much more likely in this case than mole removal. To remove a mole using a product useful for both moles and warts you need to spend a little more. When you do a search on-line you'll find plenty of "miracle" products, but save yourself some time and frustration and use this tested product with good results.

Instructions

1. Order the product "Wart and Mole Vanish by Pristine Herbal Touch." The link to this site is below. Basically, this product does a natural type of cauterization.

2. Clean the mole with soap and water. You can also use antibacterial soap or lotion to prepare the area.

3. Rough up the skin of the mole using the emery board provided. This part is vital as it helps to give the cream an entry point to dissolve the mole. Try not to scratch up the skin around your mole or poke or cut it. Have a friend help if you are not able to reach the area.

4. Open the wart and mole remover cream and mix, using the stirring stick. Cover the mole completely.

5. Wait 20 minutes. You'll feel a stinging sensation and the mole will turn black or darker brown. After 20 minutes, carefully and gently wash off the cream. Raised moles may require a second treatment. Otherwise your mole will scab over and fall off within a week or two.

Lap Band Follow Up Instructions

A lap band is a surgically implanted device that restricts the amount of food your stomach can hold. It is an effective and extreme weight loss solution for those whose body mass index is 40 or greater and for those with a BMI of 35 or greater and who have increased medical problems associated with normal weight loss. According to Dr. Helmuth Billy, a lap band specialist in Ventura, California, follow-up after surgery is one of the most important parts of the procedure.

Pre-Surgery Planning

Before undergoing the lap band implant surgery, prospective patients must undergo several appointments with the surgeon and a counselor. In addition to reviewing medical concerns and conducting preparedness evaluations, the surgeon will set up a plan to find a local qualified physician who can monitor the patient's progress over the long term. If proper adjustment appointments are not made, the patient's weight will plateau and the device will be ineffective.

Outpatient Follow-Up

Most lap band patients are released from the hospital within 24 hours after surgery. The outpatient follow-up is typically scheduled for seven days after the operation. During this first follow-up, the surgeon may briefly examine the patient while the nursing staff will make any adjustments to the lap band. Since the lap band is not yet filled, this first appointment usually lasts only a few minutes.

Adjustment Appointments

In the first year after surgery, patients have between five and eight adjustment appointments (including the outpatient follow-up one week after the operation). The lap band is filled with saline fluid four to six weeks after the surgery to give your body enough time to heal from the initial operation. During the adjustment appointments, the nursing staff and physician will determine if the patient's band needs to be tightened or loosened based on her progress and any health concerns the surgeon may have. To tighten the band, the nursing staff injects a small amount of sterile saline solution into the subcutaneous lap band access port. To loosen the band, the nurse removes a predetermined amount of saline solution with a syringe. The port is located by either feeling around the abdominal skin manually or by using X-ray equipment as the port is not externally exposed. Most adjustment appointments only take a few minutes.

Long-Term Follow-Ups

The lap band system remains in the body for the patient's lifetime, so regular follow-ups are required. After the first year, patients are advised to schedule follow-up appointments every three to six months. Additional follow-ups are required for pregnant women and those undergoing other digestive treatments. Appointments can be made for special circumstances as well, such as unrelated illnesses that could be affected by the lap band.

Home Remedy For An Herbal Foot Detox

In modern societies, people are bombarded with toxins from chemicals ingested, as well as from water and air pollution. Commercial detox programs are available for internal and external cleansing of the body. One popular method of detoxing the body is to apply pads to the feet. Foot detox pads can be either bought or made on your own using herbs.

Herb Selection

Many herbs have detoxifying properties. Although traditionally taken as a tea or ingested as a supplement, herbs also have benefits when applied topically. Herbs may be mixed and applied to the feet to draw out toxins during sleep or they can be steeped and used as a foot soak.

Creating a blend of beneficial herbs enhances the toxin-eliminating powers of the herbs. Consider poke root for its anti-inflammatory properties as well as immune and lymphatic cleansing. Echinacea root increases immune function, and garlic is popular for boosting immune function and for heart health properties.

Hops flowers can be added to the detox mixture for skin problems like eczema and also for soothing nervous tension. Lavender flower aids with rheumatism, neuralgia and insomnia. Peppermint leaf has antiseptic and slight anesthetic properties and also adds a pleasant aroma to homemade detox therapy.

Process

Gather the herbs you intend to use for your detox foot pad. Break leaves and roots into small pieces for approximately a quarter cup of each herb. Place the mixture in a small pan. Add enough water to cover the herbs and heat until the mixture starts to boil. Remove from the heat, drain and allow to cool.

Creating foot pads for the herbal mixture can be done inexpensively; however, they should be resistant to leaking. A medical, self-stick gauze pad with plastic backing that is approximately a 3- to 4-inch square works well. A square of gauze backed by a piece of cellophane will also work. Use medical tape for this method so that it doesn't pull the skin when removed.

Place the herb mixture on the pad, plastic side out, and tape the pad to the arch of the foot. Carefully put on a pair of socks in case any moisture escapes from the pads. Upon awakening, remove the foot pads and throw them away.

For a simple detox foot soak, place enough very warm water into a container to cover your feet. Add 2 cups of apple cider vinegar and 2 Tbsp. of cayenne pepper. Toss in a variety of herbs. Relax and soak your feet until the water cools.

Added Ingredients

Creating an herbal mixture with additional ingredients can enhance the detoxifying impact of a homemade foot detox. Sea salt, bentonite clay, baking soda and Epsom salts can be blended easily with herbs. Bentonite clay is especially useful for drawing out toxins.

Recommendations

Referencing an encyclopedia of herbs is beneficial when choosing herbs for detoxification. The list of detoxifying herbs is extensive and learning about the numerous varieties will allow you to create many combinations, such as revitalizing or soothing mixtures.

Tell If A Child Needs More Sleep

Sleep is essential, not only for adults but for children as well. Sleep is especially important for a child because sleep aids in the mental and physical development. When a child doesn’t get enough sleep it can interfere with his or her ability to concentrate. This can be a major problem when that child is in school and can’t focus on the schoolwork. A lack of sleep can also cause other problems. If you are a parent, it’s important that you recognize the signals that indicate a child is sleep-deprived. Follow the steps below to help you determine if your child isn’t getting the amount of sleep he or she needs.

Instructions

1. After your child goes to bed, check in on him or her approximately 30 minutes later. If your child is still awake, you may consider that he or she may be sleep-deprived. Perform this type of check on your child again on subsequent nights to confirm your suspicion of sleep deprivation.

2. Take note of how long it takes your child to wake up in the morning. If he or she seems to struggle with getting out of bed, sleep deprivation could be the cause.

3. Listen for reports from your child’s teacher about falling asleep during class and/or problems with concentration. A lack of sleep can seriously affect your child’s ability to absorb information.

4. Watch for signs of agitation. When a child is tired, he or she may become grouchy.

5. Notice if your child tends to sleep more on non-school days. A sleep deficit is cumulative and can leave your child totally exhausted once it catches up with him or her.

Drug & Alcohol Treatment Aftercare

Graduating from a drug treatment facility is not the end of substance abuse recovery. For most addicts, they will face addiction long after the program has finished, facing cravings and temptations for relapse each day. Luckily, there are many programs available for aftercare to continue the recovery process.

Relapse Recovery Groups

One of the most common forms of aftercare are relapse recovery groups. Relapse recovery groups are located throughout the nation and provide weekly meetings for recovering addicts to meet with other recovering addicts under the guidance of a group counselor for support and continuing education.

12 Step Programs

12 step programs are another common aftercare option for recovering addicts. 12 step programs (such as Alcoholics Anonymous) offer step-by-step instructions, mixed with group support and sponsorship, to help recovering addicts remain sober.

Halfway Houses

Halfway houses can also be used as an aftercare option. Halfway houses act as sober living facilities to provide recovering addicts a safe place to live while making the transition from treatment back into regular life.

Behavioral Therapy

Continuing behavioral therapy can also be an effective form of aftercare. Continuing behavioral therapy allows those recovering from substance abuse the opportunity to continue working with a mental health professional to address and change habits or other aspects of their life that contribute to the desire to use drugs or alcohol.

Maintenance

In more serious cases, aftercare may also include drug maintenance programs. This is especially true for those addicted to heroin or other opiates who require methadone maintenance to remain sober.

What Herbs Help Relieve Acid Reflux

If you experience heartburn frequently, you may have acid reflux disease. Acid reflux disease is when stomach acid comes up through the esophagus. This can cause an erosion of the esophagus and you can suffer from frequent heartburn, There are many different treatments and prescription medications for acid reflux, but natural medicine may be the best way to go in relieving it.

Black Pepper

Black pepper is an aromatic herb that enhances taste, helps improve gastric circulation and stimulates digestion. Add it to different recipes and foods. For best results, use fresh, ground black pepper.

Indian Long Pepper

Indian long pepper can protect against the development of gastric ulcers. This herb can also stimulate digestion, metabolism and assimilation for foods ingested. This is a powerful herb to help relieve acid reflux.

Ginger

Ginger is one of the purest herbs used to relieve acid reflux. Its effectiveness is because of its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and analgesic properties. Fresh ginger can be added to recipes or as an extra garnish to a finished meal. It can also be taken as a tea and powder form.

Licorice

Licorice acts like an antacid for acid reflux and is a powerful herb with anti-inflammatory properties. It can also help in preventing ulcers. Licorice can be taken in powder form and in tea. Be careful how much you take because high doses can cause headaches, water retention and high blood pressure. The recommended dose is 1 cup of tea or 3 tbsp. of powder.

Natural Ways To Boost Testosterone

Testosterone is the primary male hormone in all mammals. Produced primarily in the testes, it is responsible for the development of adult male characteristics, such as facial hair, increased strength, larger muscle mass, as well as sexual drive. It has been tied to male aggression, but also to ambition, and remains a point of contention regarding male personality. Testosterone levels begin to decrease in earnest during the middle age years and continues throughout the rest of a man's life. This decrease has been tied to a number of health issues, including osteoporosis, loss of libido, inability to have an erection and decreasing muscle mass. Aside from a testosterone replacement therapy, there are a number of ways to increase testosterone with natural methods.

Regular Sleep

A fatigued body has greater difficulty performing normal functions, including testosterone production. Testosterone levels increase while the body sleeps and regular sleep helps to maintain a healthy testosterone level, so be sure to get plenty of rest.

Weight

In overweight men, those 20 to 30 percent above ideal body mass, the body's production of testosterone begins to decrease. Losing excess weight can help to boost testosterone levels.

Avoid Crash Diets

In the bid to shave off weight, some will engage in crash dieting or starvation dieting. Denying the body food will actually trick the body into slowing testosterone production. A steady exercise regimen with a healthy diet will help boost testosterone levels.

Sexual Activity

The simplest way to increase testosterone is to engage in sexual activity. The body will dump more testosterone into the system as part of the sex act.

Limit Alcohol

Excessive alcohol intake can stop testosterone production. Avoid binge drinking situations. You should also alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to limit the alcohol content in the body at one time.

Information On The Herb Ashwagandha

Ashwaganda (W. somnifera) is one of the most commonly-used herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. Ashwaganda is increasingly gaining favor as a medicinal herb in the United States and other Western nations.

Synonyms

Because of its adaptogenic effects, which some herbalists have compared to ginseng and rhodiola, ashwagandha is sometimes referred to as "Indian ginseng." It is sometimes erroneously called winter cherry.

Adaptogenic Effects

Ayurvedic practitioners may recommend ashwagandha for people who are under serious emotional or physical stress. It helps to minimize changes in sleep and appetite during high-stress situations.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Because it can modulate immune response and inflammation, ashwagandha is sometimes used in the treatment of rhematoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, lupus and other inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Safety

Ashwagandha is generally well-tolerated and rarely produces side effects or drug interactions. However, it has not been extensively studied for use in humans, and its exact pharmacology is unknown.

Dosage

Herbalists and Ayurvedic practitioners may recommend 500 to 2000 milligrams of ashwagandha root powder daily. Because it is a natural herb, its potency may vary.

What Are The Meanings Of Tornadoes In Positive Dreams

Dreaming of tornadoes can be a good sign.

Sometimes, nothing is more confusing than our dreams. Random signs, symbols and people appear with no explanation about their meaning. Many are important things our subconscious minds are trying to tell us -- others are thrown in for no reason. The most crucial thing to remember when interpreting dreams is how you feel about them. If the dream is accompanied by a positive feeling, its meaning is often positive -- no matter the symbol within (for instance, tornadoes).

Change

One of tornadoes' most basic symbolic meanings is change. If you're looking to come out of a period of long stagnation and frustration, your tornado may indicate that is about to happen. Positive feelings associated with the dream often mean the change will be positive as well. This change may be in a job situation, relationship or other aspect in your life you feel needs alteration.

Emotions

Emotions may also be a potential meaning of your tornado. Confusion, anger and turmoil in love are classic symbols -- but if your dream is positive, it may mean that these feelings have been aired -- or are about to be -- and plague you no longer. Tornadoes can symbolize a "clearing of the air" after a fight or long period of silence between two people.

Speed

Your dream tornado may also mean speed --things are going to happen quickly that will change your life forever. If you've been through a slow period in romance, or recently took on a lot of projects at work, look for fast results and constant turnover.

Past Turmoil

Dream tornadoes may indicate negative emotions or situations that are in the past. After a tornado, the landscape is forever altered, but the danger has passed. If you recently underwent a divorce, lost a job or had a fight with someone, a positive dream tornado tells you not to worry. The worst is over, and now you can begin to rebuild.

Coming Together

Two forces coming together may also be a symbol in your dream. Tornadoes occur when hot and cold air traveling in opposite directions run smack into each other. If you recently reconnected with an old friend, family member or lover, your dream is confirming that this is a good thing.

Challenge

Finally, tornadoes in dreams may represent positive challenges that you feel ready to accept. So take that new job across the country, marry that special someone or go skydiving the way you've always wanted. Your subconscious mind says it's a "go."

Home Remedies For Sinus Pain & Pressure

Sinus pain can be caused by allergies, the common cold and bacterial infections. Sinus pain can occur between the eyes, around the nose, forehead and cheeks, and may spread to the ears, teeth and jaws. Remedies to treat sinus pain focus on reducing the inflammation of the nasal passages and sinuses and thinning out the mucus so that it can be drained from the body.

Steam

Breathing in the steam produced by a warm shower or bowl of hot water can reduce nasal congestion that can cause sinus pain.

Neti Pot

A neti pot filled with a saline solution can be used to loosen and rinse mucus from the sinuses, which relieves pain and pressure.

Heat

A warm cloth or rice bag held to your forehead and face can reduce sinus pain and pressure caused by congestion.

Fluids

Drinking plenty of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverages such as water and juice can help mucus flow out of the sinuses and reduce sinus pain.

Gravity

Elevating the head of your mattress or using several pillows to prop up your head while sleeping can help the sinuses drain and ease the pain from congestion.

Soup

Chicken soup is a classic remedy for colds and can also relieve sinus pain by thinning mucus and reducing congestion, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Spices

Heat from spices such as chili powder and cayenne pepper, or from eating hot peppers, onion and garlic, can thin mucus and promote drainage, reducing sinus pain.

Diagnose Nasal Congestion

Nasal congestion is a common ailment to millions of people. Most often, congestion is brought on by allergies to a wide variety of items. Diagnosing your nasal problems can be easy, if someone is willing to pay attention to the signals their body is sending. This can be useful in reporting symptoms to a doctor or diagnosing yourself.

Instructions

Diagnose Nasal Congestion

1. Monitor your breathing. If you feel a shortness of breath or are focused solely on breathing through your mouth, nasal congestion may be an issue. This can make everything from sleeping to exercising more difficult.

2. Pay attention to signals your nose is sending you. A great deal of mucus and nasal discharge is a sure-fire sign of nasal congestion. Often, doctors will ask for color and consistency of this discharge in order to properly diagnose your nasal issues.

3. Listen for odd noises like wheezing through the nose. Whistling and wheezing noises are caused by the nasal passages being blocked and air flowing in an unnatural pattern. This too, is a sign that congestion is causing problems in your nasal system.

4. Watch for a great deal of sneezing. Sneezing is your body’s way of getting rid of unwanted particles and irritants in your nasal cavity. Excessive sneezing is a sign of nasal congestion and can normally be remedied by over the counter medicine.

5. Feel your nose for signs of blockage. A constant itching and need to adjust your nose is your body’s way of telling you there is something in your nasal passage that is not supposed to be there, most likely congestion.

What Are The Causes Of Muscular Sclerosis

It is very important to understand that no direct cause of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has been discovered yet. Scientists are working everyday towards that goal, however they have been unable to determine a cause. They have been able to find some factors that may lead to the development of MS. Researchers have also been able to rule out some factors that were previously believed to cause the disease.

Immune System Factor

The myelin is the fatty cover that surrounds nerve fibers. In MS, an autoimmune response in the body attacks this cover. Scientists have been unable to determine what exactly the immune cells are trying to attack. They have been able to figure out which cells are starting the attack and some of the factors that cause the attack. They have also been able to find what is drawing the cells to attack the myelin.

Vitamin D Factor

Vitamin D is produced naturally by the body when exposed to sunlight. This vitamin is known to make the immune system stronger and protect the body against autoimmune diseases such as MS. People that live closer to the equator are exposed to more sunlight than those that live further away from it. It has been found that there are more cases of MS further away from the equator and the increased amount of vitamin D found in the people living close to it is believed to decrease their risk of developing the disease.

Infectious Factor

Being exposed to different viruses and bacteria has been known to cause inflammation of the sheath around nerve fibers. Since this is one of the effects of MS, scientists are trying to determine if there are specific viruses or bacteria that cause this to happen. Researchers are currently studying different viruses and bacteria to see if any of them are found to trigger MS.

Genetic Factor

MS is not a hereditary disease, but it is shown that being directly related to someone with MS dramatically increases the risk of developing the disease. Scientists have found that in families with multiple people that have MS, common genetic factors are shown. It is believed that people with MS are born with a genetic predisposition to react differently to certain environmental factors. This reaction will cause an autoimmune response in the body.

Disproved Factors

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in many drinks and sugar substitutes. There is no scientific proof that this substance leads to the development of MS. It was once believed that exposure to heavy metals such as mercury or lead caused MS. While this exposure may cause some nervous system damage, this damage is different than MS and there is no scientific support to show that exposure to these metals will cause MS.

Home Remedies For Plugged Ears

Plugged ears can keeping you from enjoying your day and being effective, so when faced with plugged ears, just what can you do? Here are a few natural remedies to unplug congested ears with little residual affects.

Swallowing

Swallowing frequently can help unplug ears, by pressing air through the ear canals, thereby clearing out the canals.

Closing Up the Nasal Passages

You can unplug your ears by closing the passage; hold your nose and the unplugged ear closed, then blow. The pressure will clear up the passage.

Yawning

Yawning will unplug your ears by pressing air through the canal; this will adjust your ears and keep them unplugged.

Wax removal

Keeping your ear free of wax will keep the canals from getting clogged. Frequent cleaning is needed.

hydrogen peroxide

Placing a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in the ear will clear out any congestion causing plugged ear; just add a few drops in the ear and wait for the fizzle. Once the fizzle is finished, the peroxide is done working. Just drain.

Pure Grain Alcohol

Placing a few drops of pure grain alcohol (once in the morning, once in the evening) with the plugged ear will dry up any congestion within the canal and get the canal functioning again.

What Is The Safest Contraceptive

Choosing the safest contraceptive depends on your health and allergies. Implants, shots and IUDs, the most effective contraceptives, have the most dangerous side effects, whereas condoms, sponges and cervical caps, contraceptives with the least dangerous side effects, have the highest chance of pregnancy.

Warning

While using any contraceptives, seek medical care if you experience severe pain in the abdomen, chest, head or legs, or if you have blurred vision or numbness.

Allergies

Latex allergies affect up to 6 percent of the general population and approximately 4 percent of people experience spermicide allergies. These allergies can render condoms, cervical caps and diaphragms unsafe for those affected.

Side Effects

Oral contraceptives, patches and injections may cause irregular bleeding, headaches, weight gain or nausea. IUDs are associated with pelvic inflammatory disease, and implants are associated with blood clots and ovarian cysts.

Health Concerns

All hormonal contraceptives have health risks that are aggravated by smoking. Cervical caps and IUDs are not safe for women who have had toxic shock syndrome.

Fertility Concerns

Eptopic pregnancy, implantation outside the womb, may occur when using an IUD or birth control implant. Pelvic inflammatory disease associated with an IUD may affect future fertility. Less than 1 percent of women miss their periods and do not ovulate for more than six months after stopping use of oral contraceptives.

Use Sepia Homeopathy Remedy

Sepia is a homeopathic remedy that may give you relief from tension headaches or from nausea caused by the smell of food. Homeopathy was developed by German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) and is gaining more popularity around the world after enjoying widespread use in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Europe.Highly diluted extracts made from plants, flower, herbs and sometimes animals are used in homeopathic tinctures and pellets. Consider your symptoms. If you believe you have a more serious medical condition, see your doctor.

Instructions

1. Note your exact symptoms. Sepia has been used with success for the relief of certain types of headaches and chronic sinus conditions. Sepia has also been used to help alleviate severe constipation and arthritis in the legs.

2. Start with the lowest dosage. All homeopathic remedies are available in alcohol-based tinctures and also as sweetened pellets. Both are taken sublingually, meaning under the tongue. This allows the remedy to be absorbed more readily into the bloodstream.

3. Follow the specific dosage directions for the strength you purchase. Available at health food stores and homeopathic pharmacies, sepia comes in different strengths: begin with the most mild.

4. Track your progress in a notebook. Some homeopathic remedies have an immediate effect on your health condition, and other remedies may take several months to prompt a physical or emotional change for the better.

5. Abstain from smoking, drinking coffee, consuming mint foods and using mint-flavored products (such as toothpaste and dental floss). All of these work against the efficacy of any homeopathic remedy.

Treat Bleeding Ulcers

An ulcer is a lesion in the tissue. Ulcers in the lining of the stomach and the duodenum are commonly referred to as peptic ulcers. Ulcers located in the stomach are called gastric ulcers. Ulcers can be very painful and cause complications such as bloating, nausea, vomiting, and acid reflux. Long thought to be a product of too much stress ulcers are typically caused by the bacterium Helicobacter (H. pylori). NSAID drugs such as common pain relievers can also cause ulcers. NSAID's may also agitate an ulcer and cause it to bleed. Bleeding ulcers can be very dangerous and require treatment by a doctor. The following are treatments available for curing bleeding ulcers.

Instructions

1. Discontinue the use of NSAID's if possible. This will help to relieve further agitation to the ulcer and slow or possibly stop the bleeding.

2. Start a regimen of antibiotics to treat the ulcer. Many times doctors will use antibiotics to combat the presence of the H. pylori bacterium and also to prevent the development of stomach cancer.

3. Have an endoscopy to stop the bleeding. Your doctor will use tubes to inject solution into the ulcer to stop the bleeding.

4. Try natural remedies. Yarrow is an herb known for its healing properties and its ability to stop bleeding. It can be used in teas to help stop bleeding ulcers.

5. Get laser surgery. In some cases, laser surgery is necessary to seal off the vessel causing the bleeding.

Signs Of Low Oxygen Saturation

Low oxygen saturation, also known as hypoxia, refers to a shortage of oxygen within the body. Hypoxia can be classified as generalized hypoxia, resulting when the entire body is denied of oxygen, or tissue hypoxia, caused by dearth of oxygen in a specific body section or region. It results from inadequate oxygen supply to the body which leads to a drop in the partial pressure of oxygen within the arterial blood. Normal oxygen saturation ranges between 96 percent to a 100 percent whereas a percentage below 90 can cause life-threatening complications.

Cyanosis

Cyanosis is attributed to the un-oxygenated hemoglobin levels within the capillaries that exceed 5g/dl leading to fingernail beds, mucosal membrane, skin pigment and sometimes the nose, ears and feet turning blue. The blue pigment is easily visible when the oxygen levels of the body fall below 90 percent. Cyanosis can also be attributed to the presence of abnormally high methemoglobin (metHb) which prevents metHb from binding with oxygen, lowering the oxygen saturation.

Cognitive Distortion

When the availability of oxygen reaching the brain is obstructed, it decreases the level of consciousness and attention and leads to uncoordinated movement. Further reduction of oxygen availability in the brain can cause cerebral hypoxia that can result in a coma, which is a complete loss of awareness. Other symptoms of cerebral hypoxia such as lack of response to light and poor breathing can arise from severe reduction of oxygen saturation in the brain.

Gastronomical Disturbances

When the body experiences low oxygen saturation, blood is directed to the vital organs such as the heart, brain and the lungs, leading to the decrease in digestion and absorption of food in the gastrointestinal tract, thus compromising its core function. Disturbance of the digestive system as a result of hypoxia will cause people to feel nauseated and suffer from loss of appetite. Slow absorption and breakdown of food in the gastrointestinal tract as a result of hypoxia can cause vomiting.

Rapid Breathing

When the body experiences hypoxia, it automatically comes up with various coping mechanisms to deal with the situation. Depth and rate of breathing are increased to help deliver more oxygen to the lungs. Pulse rate increases as a result of the heart's pumping blood faster so as to increase the level of oxygen being supplied to tissues. All of these adaptations manifest in rapid breathing as the body tries to make up for the oxygen deficit in the system. The body can accommodate these adaptations only for a limited time, which necessitates supplemental oxygen.

Treatment of Hypoxia

Hypoxia is often treated by giving patients supplemental oxygen, commonly referred to as oxygen therapy. People suffering from hypoxia are hospitalized and placed on a mechanical ventilation to assist in breathing. The vital signs of blood pressure, respiratory rate, temperature and heart rate are monitored constantly. Cold blankets can help slow down the brain cell activity, decreasing the demand for extra oxygen. However, the underlying cause of hypoxia should be treated to prevent future occurrences.

Dental Infection Caused By Root Canal

Teeth

Teeth are rather complicated parts of the body, even if they may look rather simple from the outside. The outermost layer of the tooth is made of enamel, and it acts like a shield to protect the rest of the tooth from harm. Beneath that is the second layer of the tooth called the dentin. And beneath the dentin is what's called tooth pulp. When the tooth first emerges it's nourished by the pulp, but once the tooth has matured and the root canals (paths where blood is allowed to provide minerals and nutrients to the tooth) develop, the pulp is rather unnecessary. However, if the tooth pulp dies, an infection can result.

Tooth Infection

A tooth can become infected from either inside the tooth, or outside the tooth. Infection inside the tooth can result from the tooth pulp dying and blocking the root canal. Or an infection can occur from outside the tooth, with the enamel and the dentin cracking open and foreign object getting into the tooth pulp. In either case tooth infection causes pain, swelling, temperature sensitivity, and other uncomfortable symptoms. If the infection is allowed to spread then it can reach the gums, jawbone, and even other teeth to do more damage.

Root Canal

Since the tooth pulp isn't necessary for an adult tooth to remain healthy, a procedure known as a root canal removes the tooth pulp but leaves the tooth intact. Once this procedure is performed, which will remove the blockage of the actual root canal as well as the impurities that are causing the infection the tooth will be filled with another substance, and then sealed closed. However, care should be taken before getting a root canal. If there is in fact nothing wrong with the tooth and the problem is in the gums, then opening up the tooth may create an opportunity for a tooth infection to manifest itself. Or if a tooth isn't properly sealed, than infection may get inside the filled tooth and ruin it despite all of the efforts to the contrary. Before getting this procedure done, make absolutely certain that it's necessary, otherwise you may in fact be making the problem worse instead of better.

Home Exercises During Primary Dysmenorrhea

Primary dysmenorrhea (cramping and pain prior to or during menstruation) is a extremely common problem. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, as many as 90 percent of menstruating women experience this disorder on some level, usually in adolescence. Exercises may alleviate primary dysmenorrhea.

Reverse Crunches

Target the lower abdominal muscles in your workout. Sit-ups and regular crunches do work the abdominal muscles, but they tend to work the upper or entire abdominal sheath. They do not target the abdominal muscles of the lower abdomen nearer to the uterus.

One exercise to try for the lower abdominal muscles and relief of menstrual pain is the reverse crunch. To do the exercise, lie on your back and place your feet in the air, feet together or just slightly apart, with knees slightly bent. Place your hands palm down under your buttocks to stabilize you. Then use the lower abdominal muscles to pull the legs up toward the chest. You do not need to go very high; aim for just enough lifting to engage the abdominal muscles fully. Repeat the exercise for up to 45 seconds at a time or in sets of 10.

Pelvic Stretch

When muscles are contracting enough to cause pain, the best way to relieve the pain is to gently stretch the muscle into relaxation, so it does not hurt anymore. You can relieve primary dysmenorrhea by stretching out the pelvis.

The bridge is a great exercise for stretching the abdomen safely. To do a bridge, lie on your back with your knees bent. Push up slowly with your legs and feet to lift your pelvis completely off the floor until your back is straight. Hold for a few seconds and then lower your pelvis back down to the floor. Keep your abdominal muscles engaged during the exercise to keep the back stable by pulling them in toward the belly button.

Stability

Try to keep your body posture as stable as possible. The more aligned your body is, the less likely it is that your uterine muscles will tire and want to spasm and contract as harshly. You can do this with pelvic rocking exercises.

A common pelvic rocking exercise is the cat pose done in yoga. You simply get on all fours, let the pelvis fall down naturally as far as possible, and then draw the pelvis back in by curving up the spine. Don't let the abdominal muscles drop as you are in this position. Another exercise is to sit on a hard chair and lean forward and back and then from side to side while trying to keep the upper body straight.

Tips

When you do these exercises for primary dysmenorrhea, make sure to stay hydrated and remember to breathe through the movements. Oxygen and water are needed by your muscles to get enough energy to do work, and hydrated, well-nourished muscle tissue is less likely to cramp. Always warm up the muscles before diving into harder exertions to prevent injury.

Balance Hormones To Treat Cold Sores

Balance Hormones to Treat Cold Sores

Cold sores are a part of the herpes family and pop up in the area of the lips and nose. The herpes virus stays dormant in the form of genital warts, cold sores and shingles. Cold sores usually happen during times of extreme stress or over exposure to the sun. Balancing hormones is one way to treat cold sores and even prevent them from happening.

Instructions

1. Get enough vitamins and minerals through a well balanced diet each day. Avoid foods high in fat, salt and sugar.

2. Add supplements to your diet to make up for what you don't get through the foods you eat. Women need additional calcium and folic acid as well as many minerals not present in the typical diet to keep hormones in balance.

3. Get plenty of rest. The body loves routine, so try to wake up and go to sleep at the same time each day. If you have trouble sleeping, gentle stretching at bedtime, warm milk with a dash of nutmeg or herbal tea helps calm the body and promote sleep.

4. Keep exercising. One of the best ways to keep hormones in balance is through regular exercise. Exercise strengthens the heart, bones, joints and muscles and keeps your body flexible. Exercise also improves coordination and brain function throughout life, but especially as we age.

5. Take a lysine supplement. Lysine is an essential amino acid that comes from the foods we eat. The body uses lysine to make protein. Protein makes antibodies, enzymes, hormones and body tissue. Get lysine supplements at your local health food store or vitamin shop.

Sinus congestion can be brought on by allergies, sinusitis or a viral infection. It can cause intense headaches and pressure around your sinus cavities. Long-term sinus congestion is the perfect breeding ground for infections. Unclog your sinuses with great home cures that will leave you breathing easy again.

Liquids

Get your mucus flowing by staying hydrated and drinking at least 10 8 oz. glasses of water a day. Use herbal teas like peppermint, ginger and chamomile. If you have any mint growing in your yard, wash it off and boil it in a pot of water for 5 minutes. Scoop out the mint and enjoy the water with honey. Make spicy soups like tortilla, hot tomato and chicken noodle with lots of pepper flakes. Add salsa, hot sauce, horseradish, cayenne, chili flakes, garlic, raw onion or wasabi. Do not drink or eat anything with dairy. Milk products help form mucus. Be careful not to use salt, because it will dry you out.

Steam

The easiest way to break up the mucus in your sinus cavities is to use steam. Close all the doors in your bathroom. Turn on the shower and keep it at the hottest temperature. Get into the shower or sit outside with a warm wash rag over your head. Bring in some cool water to stay hydrated. Let the steam work its magic for at least 30 minutes. Have tissues on hand to blow your nose. Another great method is to boil water on the stove. Put a towel over your head and breathe the steam in for 10 minutes. Be careful not to open your eyes. If you have a Neti pot, fill the pot with 2 tbsp. of sea salt and water. Pour directly into your nose and allow the water to drip out. Neti pots can be bought at health food stores and pharmacies.

Nutrients

Eat a diet full of fruit and vegetables. Get plenty of Vitamins C, E, A and B. Zinc lozenges work wonders for sinus infections. If you are on antibiotics, you must replenish the good bacteria that is being killed by the medicine. Get acidophilus by taking capsules. Refrain from using decongestants for a prolonged period. They can become addictive and will hinder your normal sinus functions. Do not use decongestants if you have a history of high blood pressure or heart disease. Give your sinus congestion time to heal. If you do not see a marked improvement, consult with a doctor after a week.
