Herbs


Herbs can be used as natural cures for anxiety disorders, with valerian root being the most popular. This particular herb is reported to have the lowest number of side effects, although it may cause drowsiness. It should be taken at night.


Other herbs that may be considered for combating anxiety disorders are Kava Kava, St. John's Wort, Lemon Balm, Chamomile and Lavender. These herbs may be taken in pill form, essential oil application or as aromatherapy.


Aromatherapy

Use Rolling Walkers

A rolling walker generally consists of a three-sided metal frame with wheels affixed to the bottom of its four legs. Walkers come in a variety of different types, and are known for making walking easier due to the easy movement of the wheels. If you have issues with balance, weak legs or other difficulties walking, a rolling walker can give you mobility while improving your walking issues. It's important to use the walker properly in order to prevent injuries.


Instructions


1. Grasp the handles of the walker firmly with both hands. You should never attempt to move forward if you only have one hand on the walker.


2. Move the walker slowly forward until it is one small step ahead of you. The walker should roll forward easily.


3. Take a small step forward until you are once again directly behind the walker. Continue the same process to move further forward.


4. Look straight ahead. If you look down, you are more likely to trip or slip. Keep your eyes up and remain alert while using the walker.


5. Wear solid shoes with nonskid soles. Leather or slick soles may cause you to slip.


6. Use the rolling walker on hard, smooth surfaces. While it can be used on thin or average carpet, it may be difficult to roll on thick carpet. Keep an eye out for loose objects or wet surfaces which can cause the walker to slide away from you.

Signs & Symptoms Of Sjogren'S Disease

Sjogren's syndrome is a disease that affects your immune system and causes fluid-creating ducts to swell and close. The most common glands affected are saliva glands and tear ducts. To diagnose the disease, your doctor may use blood tests, eye scans, or take a biopsy of the skin to test for infection. Treatment may consist of a regimen of medication, and in some cases minor surgery may be needed to open tear ducts.


Eye Symptoms

One must learn correct breathing techniques for playing a flute.


According to Cyberflute, the most important aspect of playing the flute is learning breathe properly. Breathing in order to play the instrument is different than normal breathing. Large amounts of air must be taken in quickly and then exhaled over a prolonged time period as it is pushed out by the abdominal muscles. Correct breath control enables the flute to create a beautiful tone.


Deep Breaths

In order to test yourself, put your hands above your hips and take deep breaths. Lung expansion should be felt in the front, side and back if breathing is correct.


Relax

Relaxing these muscles will also untighten the muscles between the ribs and allow incoming air to push the ribs away from each other. This process will increase lung volume on the side. When taking a deep breath in, the stomach should expand outward and upward, raising the book. Another exercise involves sitting in a chair and bending at the waist. A deep breath is taken in and a stopwatch is started while you slowly exhale, making a hissing noise. See how long it takes before you run out of air.

Control Headbanging Sleep Disorders

Head banging is a sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder. While it is disturbing for family members who observe it, there have not been cases of serious injury reported and it generally clears up by age ten. Though adults may also exhibit head banging sleep, it is usually due to mental retardation, autism, or some other developmental disorder. It is not considered a disorder unless it greatly disturbs sleep or causes injury. If it is cause for concern, actions can be taken to minimize the impact.


Instructions


1. Seek medical attention. Prior to the visit, it is a good idea to keep a sleep diary for a week or two. This diary should include the times the banging occurs and how long it lasts.


2. Prepare for the visit by gathering a complete medical history for yourself or your child. There may be other medical issues that need to be ruled out.


3. Your doctor may prescribe a sleep study to diagnose a sleep disorder. . This is called a polysonogram, which will record limb movements, heart rate, and brain waves.


4. Your doctor or therapist may prescribe medications. While most medications are only minimally effective, a 1996 Canadian study reported in Sleep magazine showed that adults who have this disorder may benefit from benzodiazapines.


5. A therapist may suggest practicing habit reversal. This includes having your child look into a mirror while he intentionally does the motion so he becomes more conscious of how his body feels and what muscles he uses when he is head banging. When he begins to head-bang at night he should start to recognize doing it by raising his hand, or saying "I'm doing it" or whatever signal you decide upon.








6. Practice a competing response every time you or your child feels the urge to do the behavior. Whatever that response is, use some of the muscles used in the head banging. It may be as simple as flexing your neck or shoulders or rolling over in bed.


7. Do not reinforce the behavior through negative input such as nagging your child to stop. This will actually help make it continue.








8. Offer your child (or yourself) a comfort object. This is because head banging may be a means of comforting self.

6. Find out about the patient's tooth brushing habits and oral health care. Bulimic patients sometimes brush their teeth up to 10 times a day, use mouthwash often and chew gum frequently in an attempt to counteract tooth damage and bad breath. You may want to ask a parent to check on her daughter's brushing habits if she is showing early signs of bulimia.

Swim After Hernia Repair

After your hernia repair surgery, you will need to gradually reintroduce physical activity to avoid jeopardizing a successful recovery. Since an abdominal hernia can be the result of muscle stress or strain, your choice of exercise during recovery should begin to address the causes of your hernia in a gentle, non-threatening fashion which can build into a regular regimen as the weeks go by. Swimming is a wonderful way to begin strengthening your abdominal muscles. The buoyancy of the water creates a weightless opportunity to work isolated muscle groups with slow and gentle motions.


Instructions


Week 1


1. Enter the water in the shallow end carefully, using the handrail.


2. Practice several standing glides in the water. From a standing position, slowly lie forward on the surface of the water, face down, reaching your arms out in front of you to form a "V." Lifting off very slightly with your feet glide over the water. Repeat five times.


3. Hold a kick board against your chest with your arms crossed around it. Slowly lie back in the water, allowing the kick board to buoy your body to the surface. Relax in the water, and gently flutter kick your feet with knees slightly bent. If this activity does not feel straining, make your way backward to the other side of the pool. When you get there, repeat the other way, but do not push off the side.


4. Practice in the pool two to three times this week for best results.


Week 2


5. Continue the exercises from Week 1, adding deep water aerobic work. Wearing your water jogging belt for better stability and flotation, water jog for five minutes, moving legs carefully with knees bent and pumping arms as well.


6. Rest for one minute, then repeat five minutes of water jogging.


7. Remove your jogging belt. Gently pushing off from the side, swim backstroke to the shallow end, reaching slowly with good arm extension and gently flutter kicking.


8. Swim freestyle two lengths of the pool, using slow, smooth arm strokes and an easy, modified flutter kick.








9. Practice this regimen three to four times this week.


Weeks 3 to 5


10. Add more repetitions and minutes to your swimming workout as your energy comes back and your post-surgery pain decreases.


11. Add two to four pool lengths of kicking practice using a kick board to strengthen quads--thigh muscles--and abs--stomach muscles. Holding the board beneath your upper torso with forearms and hands, let the board buoy you on the surface of the water while you flutter kick. Do not attempt to do the breaststroke--"frog"--kick until your recovery is more advanced, because this kick can cause strain in the groin area.


12. Swim some sprints to increase the aerobic benefits of your practice. Try swimming a length of the pool as quickly as you can. Why Do People Get Motion Sickness







Anyone can experience motion sickness.


Instead of getting behind the steering wheel when next riding in a car, climb into the back seat and let someone else drive. Now, imagine sitting so low in the backseat of a car that you can't see outside. The inner ear senses motion, but your eyes and limbs don't. Now close your eyes. It intensifies. That feeling is kinetosis, also known as motion sickness. It differs from vertigo and has no hard proof for why it happens.


Motion You Can Feel but Not See


Some children are prone to car sickness.


Oliver Stenzel of Sun2Surf writes that symptoms of kinetosis are dry mouth, cold sweat, upset stomach, dizziness and nausea and or vomiting. Whether it is sea or vehicle motion, the reason people get sick is because of a motion that causes "contradictory stimuli," according to Dr. Michael Knappich of the Berlin Center for Travel and Tropical Medicine, who was quoted for the article.


"There is a discrepancy between what the eye can see and what our body's sensory organs tell our brains," Stenzel writes. Reinhard Jarsch is a Vienna allergist who theorizes that in response to the discrepancy, the body produces more histamines, the article goes on to say. "Antihistamines like diphenhydramine or dimenhydrinate are good for dealing with mild to severe symptoms," says Knappich in the article.


Theories and Research


Researchers have theories on how motion affects the brain.


The mismatch of sensory information for some reason releases a neurotransmitter in the Area Postrema of the brain, sometimes making a person vomit, according to the Operational Medicine General Medical Officer Manual. One theory says the reflex is a poison response, because the body thinks the sensory information is a poisonous substance and should be therefore purged from the body so it is not absorbed.


A functional vestibular system is required for a person or animal to experience motion sickness. During experiments, it was noted that people and animals in which the vestibular apparatus has been interrupted, motion sickness was not induced, in spite of efforts to do so. This reason supports the poison-response theory, the manual states.


Natural Cures








Some people experience motion sickness because they are more sensitive, but eating light snacks, focusing on other activities like conversation, or singing along with the radio and making sure to look outside while traveling are helpful.


Ginger root also lays its claims. A 1988 article in the the journal Acta Oto-Laryngologica, entitled "Ginger Root Against Seasickness: A Controlled Trial on the Open Sea," states that 80 naval cadets unused to rough seas said sea sickness eased after taking ginger root every four hours compared to taking a placebo.The difference was statistically insignificant, but it does not change the fact that some felt better after taking ginger root. Fewer symptoms of nausea and vertigo were reported after ginger root ingestion.


Acupressure wristbands have also offered claims of a cure. The wristbands provides a degree of pressure on points of the body, fooling the brain into preventing nausea.


Over-the-Counter Remedies


Besides Dramamine or Bonnine, Transderm-Scop patch may be worn behind the ear for up to three days according to Dr. Gary P. Barnas, M.D., Associate Professor General Internal Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin in an article on the school's website. Sleepiness and dry mouth are side affects, and not everyone can take the drug. People with glaucoma and urinary blockage should not take the drug, the doctor writes.


Motion Sickness Can Affect Anyone


Anyone can experience motion sickness if conditions permit; however, some are more sensitive to it. Dr. Greene of Dr.Greene.com explains that newcomers to cruise or air travel may experience it because the sensations are new to their bodies and they are not used to them. As they experience more travel, the sickness will lessen unless they are highly sensitive.

Clean Your Sinuses With Hydrogen Peroxide & Water

Cleaning the sinuses when an infection is present helps clear up the condition, according to Brown University Health Education. Blocked sinuses are also uncomfortable and make it difficult to breathe easily or sleep well. Irrigation (flushing or cleaning) the sinuses is a procedure that is done at home with readily available and inexpensive materials. The person suffering from sinus conditions can repeat the process as necessary.


Instructions


1. Combine 1 oz. of hydrogen peroxide with 7 oz. of water and 1 tsp. of table salt and mix well. For comfort during application, warm the mixture to body temperature by sitting the mixing cup in a sink of hot water.


2. Place the mixture in an electric dental water-pik with a special attachment called a Grossan Nasal Irrigator Tip, both of which are available at retail stores. Before beginning the procedure, test the water-pik and attachment to be certain the water pressure does not rise over 1 inch high above the top of the Nasal Irrigator Tip.








3. Insert the Nasal Irrigator Tip a comfortable distance into one nostril, position the nose above the sink and run one-half of the solution into one nostril. Don't allow the mixture to run down the back of the throat. Keep the throat closed by blowing out gently through the lips while running the mixture through. The mixture will flow out of the other nostril.

Give A Drowning Infant Or Toddler Cpr

CPR for infants and toddlers is similar to CPR for adults, but there are minor differences due to the size of the chest cavity and breathing rates. Infant CPR is for children ages 0 to 1 year. Child CPR is for children ages 1 to 8 years. For children over 8 years old, you can use adult CPR techniques. While written instructions can teach you to do CPR, there is no substitute for hands-on training.


Instructions


CPR for Infants (Ages 0 to 1)


1. Check the child for a response. Gently shake, tap or shout at the child to determine whether the child is unconscious.


2. Send for help. If someone else is available, have them call 911 while you begin CPR. If you are alone, immediately begin the CPR sequence, before calling for help.


3. Turn the infant sideways. Sweep your finger across her tongue to clear any debris from her mouth.


4. Turn the infant onto her back. Tilt her head back, slightly, and lift her chin to open an airway. Rest one hand on her forehead to keep her head in position. Gently open her mouth with your other hand.


5. Deliver two gentle breaths. Cover the infant's mouth and nose with your mouth and exhale, gently, for one second. The infant's chest should rise. Release, let the chest fall, and repeat the breath a second time.


6. Deliver 30 chest compressions. Position your index and second fingers in the center of the infant's breastbone, just below the nipples. Press straight down and compress the chest one-third to half its depth. Press at a rate of 100 compressions per minute.


7. Repeat the two breath/30 compressions sequence for two minutes and check the infant's breathing. If you are alone, call 911 after two minutes. If the infant is not breathing, continue the CPR sequence until help arrives.


Child CPR (Ages 1 to 8)


8. Follow steps 1 through 5 in the infant CPR instructions. Cover only the child's mouth instead of both the nose and mouth.


9. Deliver 30 chest compressions. Position the palm of one hand in the center of the child's breastbone, just below the nipples. Place the other hand on top and interlace your fingers. Press straight down and compress the chest one-third to half its depth. Press at a rate of 100 compressions per minute.


10. Repeat the two breath/30 compressions sequence for two minutes and check the child's breathing. If you are alone, call 911 after two minutes. If the child is not breathing, continue the CPR sequence until paramedics arrive.

2. Promote peaceful rest with clove oil. Add a few drops to a spray bottle and spritz the room or use clove oil in a room diffuser.


3. Create an Insomnia Milk Bath by adding four drops of lavender, 3 drops marjoram and 2 drops benzoin essential oils to a running bath. Add 1 cup of powdered milk and a tablespoon of almond oil. Soak in this relaxing bath for 30 minutes before bed.


4. Encourage sleep and enhance dreams with essential oil of valerian, known for its calming, relaxing effects. Put 2 drops in the palm and massage into the chest just before bed, then press the palm into the forehead.


5. Enhance deep sleep with sandalwood oil. Use in aromatherapy, in a room diffuser or in massage, diluting the oil 1:15 with vegetable oil.


6. Spray the bedroom with a fine mist of lavender water. Add a few drops of lavender oil to 8 ounces of water in a spray bottle. Spritz the bed pillows too.

Use Hand Seals For A Chakra

Use hand seals to focus chakras.


Many people are familiar with the seven main chakras that stretch from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. However, there are five more chakras called etheric chakras that float outside the body. Together, these chakras form the 12 main chakras of the body. Many believe that chakra energy can be focused and controlled to promote calm, healing and even be focused into creating energetic changes in the physical world.


The last use is expanded in the popular anime series "Naruto Shippuden." Naruto, a young martial artist, learns 12 hand seals that help guide and direct the energy of the chakras to help him fight and perform other tasks. Each hand seal corresponds to Chinese zodiac animal as well as a chakra.


Instructions


1. Perform the Ne or Rat hand seal by curling down the last two fingers of your left hand and folding your thumb against them. Wrap the fingers of your right hand around the first two fingers of your left. This corresponds to the root chakra in your tailbone.


2. Create the Ushi or Ox hand seal by holding your left hand with the palm parallel to the floor and the fingers slightly spread. Bend the ring and middle fingers of your right hand down 90 degrees. Lace the fingers of both hands together so your right pinky is between your left pinky and middle finger. This corresponds to your sacral chakra in your groin.


3. Make the Tora or Tiger hand seal by lacing the ring and pinky fingers of both hands together with the pinky of your left hand on the outside and the first and middle fingers of both hands press together and upright. This corresponds to the navel chakra in your abdomen.


4. Produce the U or Rabbit hand seal by folding down the first three fingers of your left hand with your palm parallel to the floor. Wrap the last three fingers of your right hand around the bent fingers of the left with your right pointer finger parallel to your pinky and your right thumb on top of your left ring finger. This corresponds to your solar plexus chakra and your heart chakra.


5. Perform the Tatsu or Dragon hand seal by bending in the first three fingers of both hands. Lace your knuckles together with your left pointer finger on top and your right thumb over the left. Press the tips of your pinkies together so they stick straight out. This corresponds to your throat chakra.


6. Create the Mi or Snake hand seal by lacing your fingers together as if in prayer with your right pinky on the outside. This corresponds to your third eye chakra in the middle of your forehead.


7. Make the Uma or Horse hand seal by bending in the last three fingers of each hand. Lace your knuckles together so your right pinky is on the bottom and your pointer fingers form a triangle. Tuck in your thumbs. This corresponds to your crown chakra on the top of your head.








8. Produce the Hitsuji or Ram hand seal by curling the fingers of your left hand into a fist with your thumb sticking up above your first finger. Bend the last two fingers of your right hand over the last two fingers of your left. Stick your right middle and pointer straight up with your pointer leaning against your left thumb. This corresponds to the feminine chakra about 6 inches below your feet.


9. Perform the Saru or Monkey hand seal by holding your left hand with your palm parallel to the floor. Slip your right thumb between your left pinky and ring finger so that your palms touch. This corresponds to your masculine chakra about 6 inches above your head.


10. Create the Tori or Bird hand seal by curling down the first and ring finger of each hand. Steeple your middle and pinky fingers together with your left ring finger pressed to the outside of the right. This corresponds to the protection chakra in your dominant hand.








11. Make the Inu or Dog hand seal by curling your left hand into a fist and placing the palm of your right over it. This corresponds to the clarity chakra in your nondominant hand.


12. Produce the I or Boar hand seal by curling the fingers of both hands into a fist and turning them so your wrists are exposed. Press your palms and knuckles together. This corresponds to your auric chakra about 12 inches below your feet.


13. Perform each hand seal and focus on its corresponding chakra. Imagine each chakra as a glowing pulse of light that connects to the movements of your hands. Focus the energy into your hands so that you can feel it pulse.

Constipation is an uncomfortable digestive condition characterized by difficulty defecating. 2. Add fiber to your diet. Eating more natural and raw foods, and those high in fiber like fruits, vegetables and whole grains, can reverse serious, recurring constipation. Prunes are one popular home remedy, and papaya, guava and grapes are also known to be effective. Diet is one of the most important factors contributing to constipation. Animal proteins and dairy products are notorious for creating blockage.


3. Exercise. Failure to participate in regular physical activity can lead to a general malaise that extends to the digestive system. Exercise increases the circulatory system and tends to jump-start the digestive tract as well.


4. Use an enema. If constipation becomes severe and imminent bowel evacuation is desired for relief, an enema is an easy way to temporarily relieve an acute constipated condition. If lifestyle is contributing to the onset of constipation, however, it's likely to develop again after having an enema.


5. Take a laxative. Over the counter laxatives in the form of liquids, pills and powdered mixes are readily available at most drug stores. Like enemas, these shouldn't be relied upon to treat recurring constipation, but can be effective in relieving an acute condition.


6. Go to the doctor. In extreme cases, if a person has lost all ability to evacuate his bowels, he can go to the emergency room and have it done for him in a process called manual disimpaction. Depending on the extent of the constipation, a general anesthetic might be used to help relax the anus.
