Most Effective Product To Eliminate Bedbugs

Bedbugs are among the most tenacious of pests. Resistant to heat, cold and most common bug sprays, bedbugs are able to survive up to 18 months without air or food. Fortunately, there are a number of effective methods and products for eliminating these blood-sucking parasites. These products can be divided into three categories: insecticides for killing the bugs, various items for isolating and containing them and the Packtite, a machine designed to eliminate the bugs from items by heating them. No one product is best for killing bedbugs: various products should be used according to the specifics of your infection.

Insecticides

Bedbug insecticides come in three forms: dusts, which degrade the bugs' skin and causes them to dry out; contact insecticides, which kill the bug shortly after making contact with it; and insect growth regulators, which prevent the bugs from reproducing and maturing. There is little wide consensus on which of these products are most effective. Dusts tend to be better for insertion into cracks and crevices, while contact insecticides can be sprayed over wider areas. And although insect growth regulators do not kill the bugs quickly, they may be most effective in regulating the growth of the infestation if used in concert with one of the other two insecticides.

Containment

Various products can be used to contain the spread of bedbugs. First, identify where the bedbugs are located. Bedbugs commonly live in furniture with dense weaving, such as mattresses and overstuffed chairs. Instead of throwing the infested items out, many of them can be wrapped in a plastic wrap or cover. These covers must be allergen-proof, meaning that their holes are not large enough for pollen, dust and other allergens to permeate. If the holes are larger, bedbug eggs or larvae may be able to slip through. After applying the covers, make sure they are thoroughly sealed and no have any tears.

For bedbug-infested areas that cannot be wrapped in plastic, such as spaces between floorboards, the gaps behind moldings and cracks in walls, the perfect product to use is caulk. Use caulk to seal these holes and refuse the bedbugs access to your room. While it will not immediately kill the bugs, if properly applied, caulk will permanently entomb them. After 18 months, the bugs, deprived of oxygen and nutrients, should expire.

The Packtite

According to Bedbugger.com, the Packtite is a small black machine in which you can place items that bedbugs commonly inhabit, such as clothes, luggage and stuffed animals. After placing your things in the machine and turning it on, they should remain there for several hours while it heats up to slightly above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This is hot enough to kill all of the bedbugs and eggs inside the items. However, be sure to continue to monitor the temperature throughout the process to make sure that the temperature of the inner core of the unit reaches 120 degrees. While some areas inside the Packtite may reach that temperature, not all of them necessarily will.

Check On Disability Claims

If you are disabled, then receiving disability benefits supplements your income.

The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) allows people with disabilities to apply for disability benefits. If you file a disability claim with the SSA, a state agency processes your disability claim and reviews your medical records. Since time differs as to how long the state agency takes to process a claim, you wait to hear if your claim was accepted or denied for over two weeks. Different methods exist that allow you to check the status and progress of your disability claim.

Instructions

1. Find the date of when you filed your disability claim. Since the state disability processing agency has to go through a long process and access your medical records, you may not want to check the status of your claim within the 30 days after you filed. Disability claims take up to 90 days or longer to process.

2. Visit the SSA website and click on the link to "Disability." Click on the link to "Check Application Status" on the Disability web page. Enter your Social Security number and your disability application's confirmation number to check the status of your disability application.

3. Contact your local Social Security office as another option to check the status of your disability claim. Call or visit the office in person. The SSA website has a web page that allows you to search by your zip code for the nearest Social Security office.

4. Contact the state agency, usually known as Disability Determination Services (DDS), that processes your disability claim. Find the phone number for your state agency from your local Social Security office.

5. Call DDS and ask to speak with the state examiner considering your disability claim application. The examiner provides you with an update on your disability status, but information tends to be restricted until a final decision.

6. Call the toll free SSA number at 1-800-772-1213 to find out the status of your disability claim. Be aware that the toll free number may not be up-to-date on your claim and correct information is not guaranteed.

Possible Causes Of Nausea & Stomach Pain

Nausea and stomach pain are a common complaint and often coincide with one another. There are many causes for each and reasons for experiencing them together. Some are serious and some not. Either way, nausea and stomach pain is not something to be handled lightly.

Gallbladder disease

Gallstones or other gallbladder diseases are common causes for nausea and stomach pain. In gallbladder disease, the stomach pain is typically located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, where the gallbladder is located.

Pancreatitis

Your pancreas is located on your left side, upper abdomen. It can become inflamed from disease, as well as over consumption of alcohol.

Gastroenteritis

Commonly referred to as the stomach flu, gastroenteritis involves severe nausea and severe stomach cramping. It subsides after 24-48 hours.

Ulcers

Ulcers in the stomach are typical causes for stomach pain and nausea. The pain experienced with ulcers is typically a gnawing, burning pain.

Appendicitis

Your appendix is located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. People with an infected appendix typically experience waves of extreme nausea and significant stomach pain that can start out slightly below the navel and migrate towards the lower left side.

Gastroparesis

This condition is characterized by a paralysis of the stomach's ability to contract and move food through the digestive system. As a result, food backs up, causing nausea and sometimes pain.

Cabbage Diet Results

The Cabbage Soup Diet is one of the more persistent diets that has hit the mainstream and stayed on the landscape. While the origins of the diet are lost, it was seen at least as early as the 1980s as it spammed office fax machines. Some evidence links it back to a military recipe from the 1930s. In the 1990s and 2000s, the diet has its way around via email and has even been highlighted in major magazines.

Diet

As much as the recipe has changed over time, the basic regimen of the diet have stayed the same. Often, the dieter is instructed to eat the soup plus one or two new ingredients per day, alternating on different days of the week. The Cabbage Soup diet is supposed to be followed for no longer than seven days at a time, followed by eating a balanced diet.

Nutrition

In a 2002 article in the University of Florida News, dietary expert Elaine Turner notes that the soup is rich in some nutrients but lacking in others. The diet is suspiciously high in sodium and low in proteins and carbohydrates.

In a statement from the American Heart Association, it warns: "Despite what quick-weight-loss diet books may say, the only sensible way to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight permanently is to eat less and balance your food intake with physical activity."

The AHA also warns against fad diets such as the Cabbage Soup Diet as it encourages rapid weight loss over a short period of time. Diets that do not emphasize physical activity or changes in eating habits often result in discouraged dieters when the diet is over and the weight comes back on.

Side Effects

Cabbage can produce a large amount of gas. Abdominal discomfort is reported throughout the duration of the diet. Due to drastically reduced caloric intake, headaches and irritability can occur. Some dieters may even add weight as the reduction of calories causes the body to attempt to hold onto fat to prevent starvation, and the amount of sodium in the soup can cause bloating and water retention.

Warnings

The amount of sodium in the Cabbage Soup Diet can be high and nutritional value low so it is imperative that anyone with blood pressure, heart problems or blood sugar issues speak with a doctor before adopting the diet plan.

Overall Results

The Cabbage Soup diet should be considered more of a fast than a true diet regimen. While it may work for some dieters looking to take off a few pounds before slipping into a certain dress for a big party, it is not a long-term diet solution. Dieters that intend to take off weight over a period of time should be prepared for the weight to return as soon as the diet is concluded, as most weight lost will be water weight.

Diagnose Bladder Cancer

Diagnose Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is a type of cancer that initiates in the bladder of a person's body. It starts in the lining of the bladder and may spread to surrounding areas of the body. If you detect bladder cancer early, it increases your chances of survival and reduces long term health effects.

Instructions

1. Consider your age and other risk factors. Bladder cancer is more likely to occur in older adults. Cases of bladder cancer are rare in adults younger than 45. Men and people who smoke are also at a higher risk for developing bladder cancer.

2. Note any pain that you may be feeling. Bladder cancer can cause the patient to feel pain in the pelvic region of the body. Urination may also be painful.

3. Examine your urine for any changes. Your urine may appear reddish or have a darker than normal color. You may also experience difficulty urinating or the frequent urge to go.

4. See a doctor about your symptoms. A doctor can review your medical history and perform several tests to reach a bladder cancer diagnosis.

5. Let the physician take a urine sample. Your urine can be analyzed to detect the presence of cancer. The doctor may also want to perform a test called a cystoscopy. This allows a doctor to examine the bladder and take a biopsy.

6. Get a series of radiology tests done. An MRI and CT Scan can detect bladder cancer and let the doctor know what stage cancer you have.

Risk Factors Of A Herniated Disc

A herniated disk is a medical condition that occurs when an inner layer of cartilage pushes the outer layer into the spinal canal. This condition is often called a slipped disk, or ruptured disk, and can be extremely painful.

Causes

The primary cause of a herniated disk is age. According to the Mayo Clinic, as a person ages, her back becomes more vulnerable to injury due to loss of water content.

Risk Factors

A wide variety of factors can contribute to a herniated disk, including age, weight, smoking, occupation and height. Excessive weight and height can put strain on the back. Smoking causes oxygen levels in the blood to decrease, making smokers more prone to injury due to a lack of nutrients. Those who work at occupations that require strenuous activities are also more prone to this condition.

Complications

Not only is a herniated disk painful on its own, it can also cause further complications, such as numbness or weakness, loss of sensation in the thighs and rectum, and bowel and bladder dysfunction.

Treatment

Treatments for a herniated disk include medications and therapy that can relieve pain. In some cases, surgery is required for more serious injuries.

Prevention/Solution

Avoiding strenuous activities that require heavy lifting and excessive bending can help reduce the chance of suffering from a herniated disk.

What Happens When Your Blood Sugar Gets Too High

Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar)

Hyperglycemia is the medical term for abnormally high blood sugar. High blood sugar occurs when insulin does not control the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. Therefore, it often is a precursor to diabetes, a serious illness that does not naturally correct itself and requires medical control. Fortunately, the symptoms of high blood sugar follow a common pattern and are easily noticed. If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek out a doctor's opinion immediately, as hyperglycemia requires swift medical attention.

Symptoms of Hyperglycemia

Too much sugar in the blood causes the body to react in a variety of adverse ways. Foremost, the hyperglycemic person eats and drinks more because their insulin is not regulating their blood sugar, so the glucose is not being absorbed into the body's cells. On that note, many hyperglycemic people urinate more frequently because their kidneys are flushing out the excess glucose through the urine. Many people also feel tired most of the time because they are not absorbing energy from glucose.

When Hyperglycemia is Left Untreated

Disaster ensues if hyperglycemia is left untreated. First, there is often a drastic loss in weight because the body uses stored fat and protein as an energy source instead of the unabsorbed glucose. If the body runs on fat and protein energy long enough, the body becomes acidic, which could result in collapse, kidney breakdown, coma and even death. Hyperglycemia, to reiterate, is an extremely time-sensitive condition and must be treated by a doctor in order for the body to regain normal function.

Risks Of The South Beach Diet

No matter how nutritionally sound and viable a diet purports to be, every diet has its drawbacks. When dealing with the more commercially successful diets, sheer inundation in marketing drivel might have you believe that these plans can do no wrong, but this is hardly the truth. Like anything else, there are risks to a popular plan like the South Beach Diet. As understanding those risks is the key to making an informed decision, read on and discover what you are dealing with.

Risk 1--Saturated Fat Deprivation

The South Beach Diet recommends eating nothing but lean protein sources, which could have a negative impact on your overall hormonal profile. According to Mike Roussell, a doctoral student studying nutrition at Penn State, while excess consumption of saturated fat is linked to increased cholesterol, some saturated fats are nonetheless required by the body to produce hormones--namely the sex hormone testosterone. If you abstain from saturated-fat consumption for a lengthy period of time, do not be surprised when your testosterone levels plummet as well.

Risk 2--Mercury Contamination from Fish

The South Beach Diet also heavily recommends seafood consumption. Unfortunately, this discounts the reality of the matter--that many fish are now contaminated with mercury, thanks to pollutants in the environment. As mercury buildup in the body is related to a number of potential illnesses, the blanket recommendation of seafood consumption in the South Beach Diet is cause for concern.

Risk 3--Fails to Properly Catgorize Carbs

The South Beach Diet attempts to draw a working distinction between "good" and "bad" carbs, and for the most part it succeeds. However, your weight loss results on the South Beach Diet could be compromised by its recommended consumption of whole-grain carbs. John Berardi, biochemist Ph.D. and nutritional consultant, never places his clients on diets consisting of whole grains, opting instead to restrict their carb intake to only fruits and vegetables. Canadian physique transformation coach Christian Thibaudeau agrees--adding that carbs must be earned by becoming leaner. Until you attain a significant degree of leanness, you should avoid whole-grain carbs.

Risk 4--Trans Fat Confusion

While the South Beach Diet rallies against trans fats, its creator nevertheless recommends consumption of french fries and potato chips over baked potatoes due to the supposed positive benefits conferred by the fat in which they are cooked. What the South Beach Diet fails to grasp is that potato chips and french fries are high in trans fats precisely because of the fat in which they are cooked. This confusing recommendation could lead you to believe you are abstaining from trans fats, when in reality you are consuming them over more nutritious alternatives. This observation was made by Dr. Joseph Mercola, who advocates avoiding the South Beach Diet entirely.

Considerations

Understanding these risks will allow you to properly tailor the South Beach Diet into a healthier and more workable plan for achieving your weight loss goals. Although some of this advice is no doubt difficult to hear, especially the prohibition on whole grains, if your goal is sustainable weight loss, you must be willing to make sacrifices. Altering the South Beach Diet in accordance with the aforementioned guidelines will ensure your success, bringing you one step closer to your ideal physique.

What Make Out Of Pieces Of Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is a semiprecious gemstone beloved for its opaque pink hue. According to folklore, rose quartz promotes loving, affectionate feelings and helps to alleviate the pain of a broken heart. Whether you like rose quartz for its attractive appearance or its purported healing powers, you can use it in numerous ways. Here are some ideas for what you can make with pieces of rose quartz.

Rose Quartz in Jewelry

Create jewelry using pieces of rose quartz. Most bead retailers sell pieces of rose quartz that have been pierced to have holes, which makes them easy to use in jewelry making. You might use a single piece of rose quartz to make a stunning pendant, or two pieces to create a pair of earrings. Try stringing several pieces of rose quartz on beading thread to fashion a bracelet or necklace, or wire the rose quartz pieces to a sterling silver or gold chain for an elegant, wearable creation. You can even make a ring with a piece of rose quartz by wrapping the gem with wire and then using wire to create a ring perfectly sized for your finger, or placing the rose quartz in a special pronged setting on a ring in your size.

Display Rose Quartz in Your Decor

Place pieces of rose quartz in clear glass containers of different shapes and sizes for a serene and eclectic bit of home or office décor. Choose an assortment of clear glass vases, jars, test tubes or other interesting vessels. Fill the clear glass containers partially or entirely with rose quartz pieces. Arrange the containers on a tabletop, desk, nightstand, mantel or dresser. Rose quartz pieces also look lovely when placed at the bottom of a water-filled vase that also contains stems of pale pink flowers. Light pink roses are especially harmonious with rose quartz pieces; combine them both in a single container.

Large Rose Quartz Pieces

Some pieces of rose quartz are large enough to act as effective and attractive paperweights or bookends. Keep a large piece of rose quartz on your desk and use it to hold down papers and prevent them from blowing away. Place one or more big pieces of rose quartz on your bookshelf to keep rows of books standing upright and prevent them from falling.

Make a Heart-Healing Altar

Many alternative healers believe rose quartz has a positive effect on the heart chakra, so it may be beneficial to create a heart-healing altar using rose quartz pieces. Cover a small table or stand with a cloth, candles, illustrations, images and other objects that have spiritual significance for you. Add several pieces of rose quartz to the altar. Keep the altar in the place where you pray or meditate.

Alendronate Treatment

Alendronate (brand name, Fosamax) is manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc. of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis, to treat glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in men and women and to treat Paget's disease in men and women. Alendronate is also available with vitamin D (cholecalciferol) under the brand name Fosamax plus D.

Significance

Osteoporosis affects millions of Americans. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III indicate that osteoporosis and low bone density of the hip affects 10 million and almost 34 million people in the United States, respectively. These numbers are only expected to increase with time as the U.S. population continues to age. Osteoporosis is associated with an increased fracture risk and has a significant impact on the individuals it affects, with psychological symptoms, pain, physical limitations and lifestyle changes all part of the complications from this condition.

Description

Alendronate is a type of medication called a bisphosphonate. All bisphosphonates, including alendronate, inhibit the activity of osteoclasts, which are cells that break down the mineralized matrix of bone, a process termed "bone resorption." With continued treatment, osteoclast activity is suppressed, therefore preventing further bone loss.

Effectiveness

The effectiveness of alendronate has been evaluated in multiple studies involving thousands of patients with osteoporosis. Importantly, after several years of continued treatment, alendronate has been shown to increase bone mineral density (a measure of bone loss) and reduce the incidence of new fractures.

Contraindications

There are several conditions under which alendronate should not be used. Specifically, alendronate should be avoided in individuals with esophageal dysfunction of any kind, those who cannot stand or sit for at least 30 minutes, those with hypocalcemia, in individuals with a potential problem with aspiration (i.e., no oral alendronate) and in those with renal insufficiency.

Side Effects

Alendronate is mostly associated with gastrointestinal side effects, including abdominal pain, acid regurgitation, nausea, constipation, diarrhea and flatulence. Some have reported headache and musculoskeletal pain.

Dosing

It is recommended that alendronate be taken first thing in the morning 30 minutes before consuming any food, drink or other medications. If this precaution is not taken into consideration, alendronate may not be properly absorbed by the body, limiting the effectiveness. Alendronate is available in tablet or oral solution form. For osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, the recommended dose is typically 70 mg once weekly or 10 mg once daily. A physician may also recommend additional calcium or vitamin D tablets in those with an insufficient diet. For glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, the dose is often 5 mg once daily, except in postmenopausal women in this category, who should take 10 mg per day. For Paget's disease, 40 mg of alendronate should be taken each day for a period of six months.

Ringworm Treatment

Ringworm is a highly recognizable fungal infection characterized by the circular rash that develops on the outer layer of skin. Ringworm causes the skin to become itchy and irritated, and although unsightly, it is not serious. As with other fungal infections, ringworm is relatively easy to treat and prevent.

OTC Medications

There is a wide array of over-the-counter (OTC) anti-fungal creams, lotions and ointments to choose from. These medications typically contain one of the following topical drugs: Terbinafine, Tolnaftate, Clotrimazole or Miconazole. Ringworm generally responds well to these medications. Apply the lotion or ointment as directed for at least 2 weeks. If after 4 weeks, no improvement is evident, see your doctor.

Topical Prescription Medication

With severe cases of ringworm which cover a larger area of the body or do not respond to OTC medications, a prescription for a stronger medication is often required. These prescription medications often contain one of the following: Ciclopirox, Econazole, Oxiconazole, Miconazole, Butenafine or Terbinafine. These medications should stop the irritation and help clear up the rash. It is important to remember to use the cream for as long as the doctor instructs to keep the infection from recurring.

Oral Prescription Medication

Sometimes topical medications do not work well on certain individuals. If this is the case, the doctor will generally prescribe an oral medication that contains one of the following drugs: Ketoconazole, Fluconazole, Terbinafine or Itraconozole. Oral medications typically have a higher risk of side effects. It's also important to discuss with your doctor other medications you may be on so there is no interaction between the drugs.

Keep the Affected Area Clean

When dealing with ringworm, it's important to wash and dry the affected area before applying any topical ointments. Bathe or shower daily to soothe the itch and prevent the ringworm from spreading. Never use a harsh soap since these have a tendency to exacerbate the irritation.

Keep the Affected Area Dry

Ringworm may worsen if the affected area is not kept dry. Loose fitting, cotton clothes can prevent sweating, and using talcum powder on the area will also keep it dry. Also remember to dry the area thoroughly after bathing or showering.

Keep Your Surroundings Clean

Since ringworm can be highly contagious, it's important to keep the area around you clean while you wait for the infection to clear up. Machine wash your sheets and nightclothes in bleach on a daily basis to prevent the ringworm from spreading to other parts of your body. Avoid sharing towels, and keep showers and tubs clean so you don't spread the infection to others.

Antibiotics

Occasionally, if the ringworm is not treated for an extended period of time, the best way to clear it up is with antibiotics. If left untreated, the affected skin can blister, causing the cracks to become infected with bacteria.

Become Emotionally Strong

Some people are more resilient than others, but most people have the capacity to become emotionally strong. Instead of feeling overwhelmed and paralyzed, the emotionally strong face up to challenges. If you have emotional strength, you may not be laughing your way through difficulties, but you have the ability to withstand stress and get through whatever life throws you.

Instructions

1. Set a goal to become emotionally strong. Just making the decision is a step. Don't just wish for it. Move away from the contemplation stage and decide you will succeed.

2. Change your thoughts. This won't seem natural at first, but it will get easier. Coach yourself to start talking to yourself differently during a tough time. Say "I can handle this problem," instead of "I know I can't cope with this."

3. Practice moving outside your comfort zone, which will be uncomfortable at first. Given a choice between growth and comfort, most people choose comfort.

4. Take small steps, and don't try to do it all at once. If you're not physically demonstrative, you are most likely not going to start hugging all your friends. Try just touching them on the shoulder. It may not seem like much to others, but for you, it may be a big step.

5. Expect people close to you to resist your change and maybe complain about it. And if nobody is complaining, you're probably not experiencing a significant amount of growth.

6. Recognize the change to gain emotional strength won't happen instantly. It's a process, not an event.

Is Androgel An Hgh

With all the publicity that hormones have received in the news, there is much confusion surrounding them. Estrogen, testosterone, growth hormone and melatonin are just a few examples, which often receive much attention. Unfortunately, it's easy to mistake which hormones are which and how they function.

What is Androgel?

Androgel is a prescription-strength testosterone replacement therapy. It comes in a gel formulation and allows the body to absorb testosterone through the skin and into the blood stream. It is a product of Solvay Pharmaceuticals and is approved for use in treating persons with abnormally low levels of testosterone.

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a steroid hormone that is responsible for multiple effects in the human body. It has androgenic properties, referring to its ability to cause the maturation of sexual organs and the development of male secondary sex characteristics, including the growth of hair in the beard and axillary(armpit) area and deepening of the voice. Testosterone also has anabolic properties, which encompass its function to increase muscle mass and strength and increase bone density.

What is Human growth Hormone(HGH)?

Human growth hormone (HGH) is a hormone with multiple functions. Like its name suggest, HGH is responsible for growth. It stimulates the growth of bones, muscles, and most human internal organs. It is also leads to the breakdown of fat (lipolysis), is involved in the balance of blood glucose, and strengthens the immune system.

Are Androgel and HGH similar?

While Androgel and HGH are both hormones, they are not the same. Androgel is a form of testosterone and HGH is not. What the two do share are anabolic properties, or properties focusing around the building up of elements. Both Androgel and HGH stimulate an increase in muscle mass and bone density.

How are Androgel and HGH different?

As mentioned previously, Androgel is a testosterone supplement and is not form of human growth hormone. While both are anabolic hormones, their effects are variable. Testosterone is considered a more potent stimulant for muscle growth, while HGH is a more potent stimulant of bone growth. Additionally, Androgel has effects that lead to virilization, or the development of male secondary characteristics. This can result in the increase in density of body hair with a decrease in the hair distribution on the head: "male pattern baldness." Unlike HGH, Androgel has limited affects on blood glucose levels and fat breakdown.

Get Rid Of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the medical term used to describe enlarged breast tissue in males. The condition occurs when the body has more estrogen than testosterone. Baby boys may have gynecomastia due to exposure to their mothers' hormones in utero. Teenage boys may develop gynecomastia as the hormonal changes that come along with puberty approach. Other health conditions and medications may produce gynecomastia in older men as well. The treatment methods used to get rid of gynecomastia vary, depending on the specific cause.

Instructions

1. Schedule a physical exam with your doctor to check for health conditions that may be contributing to gynecomastia. Pituitary and adrenal gland disorders, hyperthyroidism, and liver or kidney disease can all cause a male's breast tissue to become enlarged.

2. Bring a list of all medications and supplements that you (or your child, if he is the person affected) currently take. Valium, tricyclic antidepressants, chemotherapy, and some medications prescribed to people who are HIV positive may cause gynecomastia in some people. If this is the case, your doctor may be able to find a new medication that does not carry the same side effect.

3. Avoid using excessive amounts of alcohol and illegal substances such as marijuana, heroin or amphetamines. The Mayo Clinic reports that this type of risky behavior may be the cause of gynecomastia in some men.

4. Use "watchful waiting" as an early step to treating enlarged breast tissue in males. Gynecomastia that occurs in infants and adolescents usually resolves itself without any specific treatment. In both cases, all that is needed is time for the boy's hormones to level out. A decrease in swelling of the breasts can be seen within a few weeks of birth. Teens may notice positive changes within a few months, but it can take up to a couple of years.

5. Get rid of gynecomastia by taking medications that are normally used to fight breast cancer. Tamoxifen and raloxifene are not FDA-approved to treat gynecomastia, according to the Mayo Clinic, but they are sometimes prescribed off-label for this purpose.

6. Undergo surgery to remove excess breast tissue if the condition has become disturbing and shows no sign of naturally reversing itself. Men may choose to have liposuction or even a mastectomy to remove breast tissue.

Reversing Osteoporosis

In osteoporosis patients, the bones lose calcium more quickly than they can create new bone. Thus bones become weaker and are more likely to fracture. The hip and vertebrae are particularly vulnerable and fractures in these areas can lead to serious disabilities.

Early Detection

Proper nutrition, exercise and healthy habits can help limit osteoporosis. Women are more at risk than men, due to their smaller, thinner bones and the loss of estrogen after menopause, which also contributes to bone loss. Special bone density tests are recommended, especially for postmenopausal women, to determine the condition of their bones. When bone density losses are evident, the physician can recommend steps that can slow down the deterioration of bone or medications that are now proving to reverse the condition in some cases.

Lifestyle Changes

Although lifestyle changes can make a difference in the onset of osteoporosis, it may not be able to reverse the condition once it's begun. However, it's important to avoid additional bone loss as much as possible. Factors that can limit the bone loss include avoiding caffeine, extra salt, excess drinking and smoking, One report in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" determined that animal proteins caused more calcium loss and when these were cut down, calcium loss was also diminished. Exercise, especially weight-bearing exercise such as walking, can help maintain the bones though it's also important to avoid injury. Getting vitamin D is important since it controls the absorption of calcium. People who get a few minutes of sunlight daily and eat a diet that supplies adequate calcium may not need supplements, but they can be helpful for others who do not get the recommended amount of 1,500 mg through their diet.

Medication

Several prescription medications are now available that will either limit further bone loss or actually reverse the process. The most commonly prescribed are a group of medications called bisphosphonates, which go by the brand names of Actonel, Boniva and Fosamax. These have been shown to be more effective than earlier treatments with estrogen and other such medications such as raloxifene, branded as Evista. Another reason many physicians are avoiding the hormone-related medications is their possibility of dangerous side effects such as clotting or cancer. An additional drug used to treat osteoporosis is parathyroid hormone, known as teriparatide and branded as Forteo. Current thinking is that this treatment can do more than protect the current bone, but actually rebuild bone to reverse the osteoporosis.

Chemo Treatments For Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. It often does not get diagnosed until it has progressed to the point of affecting other body parts and systems. As a result, chemotherapy is often used for treatment. Here are some important aspects of chemotherapy and its use on pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic Cancer

The pancreas is responsible for producing digestive fluids and insulin for the body. The digestive fluids help break down food for the stomach to process, releasing carbohydrates, nutrients and protein. When the pancreas becomes consumed with cancer cells, these functions can cease to exist or become heavily impacted. If the tumor cells grow large enough, they can obstruct the ducts responsible for disseminating the fluids to the stomach and small intestine.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy involves a distribution of chemical compounds into the body for the purpose of killing cancer cells. These chemicals can be designed to attack the very cell's genetic make up or DNA. Some chemicals, for example, will target the reproductive capabilities of tumor cells, while others will destroy the vessels that rob the body's nutrients. These drugs are either injected into the bloodstream or orally taken.

Purpose

Since pancreatic cancer is not normally caught until Stage 3, chemotherapy is usually given to relieve painful symptoms and not as a cure. The Cancer News website reports that survival rates do improve with chemotherapy. Sometimes the chemotherapy targets the lymph nodes for better distribution through the body. Chemicals, such as Five-Fluorouracil or Gemcitabine, may shrink obstructing tumors that cause pain or block the bile ducts.

Side Effects

Chemotherapy in general does come with side effects, such as fatigue and general weakness. Depending on the chemicals used, other symptoms like hair loss and low white blood cell count can also occur. Gemcitabine is associated with side effects like vomiting, flu-like symptoms and nausea. Watery eyes and photo-sensitivity can be associated with FIve-Fluorouracil. Some doctors would recommend taking dietary supplements to combat these side effects.

Future Chemo Treatment

The Cancer News website also states that future developments in chemotherapy may result in better treatment for pancreatic cancer patients. Some chemicals under development and testing are targeting the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) protein that helps cancer cells live longer in a body. It is located on the surface of the cells. The chemical Erlotinib targets the EGFR protein to shut it off, causing the cells to die.

Restless Limb Syndrome

If you consistently have a problem keeping your legs in the same position for an extended period of time, you may have a condition known as restless limb syndrome. Those with this condition may feel extremely uncomfortable in positions where the legs are unmoving.

Whom Does It Affect?

Unfortunately, restless limb syndrome affects both sexes and may strike at any age. It also has the potential to become worse as you age.

Symptoms

Those with restless limb syndrome may experience an uncomfortable sensation in areas of the lower body. This sensation may be an ache, burning or tingling.

When Is It Felt?

These uncomfortable sensations are typically felt after sitting in a still position for an extended period of time. Those with restless leg syndrome will likely feel the symptoms during inactivity and might notice that the symptoms disappear as they stand up and begin to move.

Causes

Restless leg syndrome is often hereditary. Stress, pregnancy and conditions such as iron deficiency and kidney failure may also serve as causes.

Treatment

Unless a particular problem, such as iron deficiency, is causing restless leg syndrome. it is usually treated with the use of pain killers, massages, hot and cold packs and exercise.

Restless Leg Syndrome Natural Relief

Restless Leg Syndrome, also known as RLS, affects over 12 million Americans and is a feeling of uneasiness and discomfort in the legs. RLS symptoms range from a slight uneasy sensation in the limbs up to a painful sleep-depriving experience for others. Categorized as a neurological disorder, Restless Leg Syndrome is the body's inability to relax when the mind wants it to relax. Greatly affecting quality of life through mental and physical distraction and exhaustion, RLS is treated with varying degrees of success. A number of homeopathic or natural alternative treatments exist to treat RLS.

Use Movement to Reduce Symptoms

Moving is the simplest remedy for mild RLS. Making the energized muscles work can decrease the intensity of uncomfortable sensations. Getting up and walking around, flexing the calf and thigh muscles, rotating the ankle and changing positions while in bed can all reduce symptoms. Massaging the limbs may decrease the sensation of pent up energy in the muscles. A brisk walk before bed or an evening exercise routine may be enough to stimulate muscles and release energy.

Learn to Relax at Bedtime

Relaxing both mentally and physically can alter the intensity of RLS symptoms. The more frustrated and stressed a person becomes, the more uptight they become and the less likely they are to have a restful night of sleep. Eliminating nighttime drinks containing caffeine or alcohol and reducing stimulants such as nicotine and sugar helps the body relax. A warm aromatic bath just before bed and a heat pad applied to the affected area provides both a physical and mental picture of relaxation and may be just the thing to quiet nerves for sleep.

The Importance of Restful Sleep

Getting plenty of rest is extremely important to sufferers of Restless Leg Syndrome, especially as symptoms become acute. A regular sleeping pattern (going to sleep and getting up at the same time everyday) helps alleviate symptoms for some people. When symptoms occur at specific times of the day, altering sleep patterns to avoid those times can relieve symptoms.

Seek Medical Advice When Symptoms Resist Natural Relief

Living with Restless Leg Syndrome can be challenging and natural treatments rarely eradicate symptoms entirely. Beginning early in a person's life and increasing in intensity with age, RLS is a chronic yet treatable condition. When symptoms start suddenly in mid-life, they may be a sign of another condition. Anyone living with a disorder that prevents them from functioning properly after trying natural relief methods should consult a physician.

Late Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

Unlike many other cancers, ovarian cancer is often difficult to catch and treat in its early stages because the early symptoms of ovarian cancer are often diagnosed as other, harmless conditions. Late ovarian cancer symptoms often become so severe that women consult their doctors, only to find that they have ovarian cancer and it has already spread outside the ovaries. Each year, over 15,000 American women die from ovarian cancer, making it the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women according to the American Cancer Society.

Considerations

Since about 75 percent of women with ovarian cancer often do not realize that anything is wrong until they experience late ovarian cancer symptoms, early ovarian cancer detection is rare. Once late ovarian cancer symptoms are detected, the cancer may have spread to the pelvis, making survival rates between 60 and 80 percent. If ovarian cancer spreads outside the pelvis, survival rates plummet to 10 to 30 percent.

Features

Late ovarian cancer symptoms include abdominal pain and bloating, a persistent feeling of fullness, weight loss or gain, vaginal bleeding, fatigue, and the need to urinate frequently.

Identification

Most ovarian cancer cases occur in post-menopausal women, often over age 60. These women, as well as those with a family history of ovarian cancer, should be especially aware of early and late ovarian cancer symptoms.

Potential

Ovarian cancer survival rates have increased in recent years due to greater access to information on potential early and late ovarian cancer symptoms, and medical experts believe that survival rates will continue to rise as more women detect ovarian cancer symptoms and receive early treatment.

Effects

Once late ovarian cancer symptoms are detected and the cancer is diagnosed, treatment options vary by age and the stage of the cancer, but usually include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

The Symptoms Of Peridontal Disease

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is a condition that is caused from a build-up of bacteria in the tissues of the mouth. In the worst of cases, the bone underneath the teeth gets deteriorated and the teeth need to be pulled. There are various symptoms that can show periodontal disease.

Redness

The gums can become very tender, they can swell up, and they can also become very red.

Recession

The gums have a natural line to them where they come down on the teeth. When they start to recede, this is a symptom of periodontal disease.

Blood

Flossing and brushing are done to clean the teeth of plaque and debris. If the gums should happen to bleed during flossing and brushing, you might have periodontal disease.

Breath

The bacteria that builds up in the mouth have a tendency to have a foul odor and cause bad breath which is another symptom of gum disease.

Teeth

The teeth can also show other symptoms. Some of these include pus build-up, separation and dentures that are no longer fitting properly.

Foods For Rheumatoid Arthritis

More than 2.5 million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disease that damages the tissues that connect bones and joints. Joint pain, swelling, stiffness, loss of function and eventual, long-term joint damage are the most common effects. The condition typically strikes similar joints on both sides of the body--most often the fingers, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles and feet. Because the severity of symptoms can vary from day to day, there is a belief that certain foods may cause the condition to flare up or worsen. Scientists say there is no definitive proof of this, although nutrition can play a role in how patients manage the condition.

The Facts

Researchers have long studied the relationship between food and arthritis. Some studies suggest eating two or more weekly servings of oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel may help reduce joint inflammation, but there is no concrete evidence. What scientists do agree on, however, is that patients with rheumatoid arthritis can benefit from eating a balanced, nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in fats and salt. In addition to giving you the vitamins and nutrients your body needs, a healthy diet helps you maintain a healthy weight, avoiding the added joint stress and inflammation that excess weight can cause.

Malnutrition Risk

Side effects of several rheumatoid arthritis medications can lead to a decreased appetite or gastrointestinal problems, which may cause a person to shy away from food. Poor nutrition and vitamin and mineral deficiencies are often the results. Many rheumatoid arthritis patients, in fact, suffer from lower-than-recommended levels of vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium and zinc. Although the best way to ingest needed vitamins and minerals is through food, your doctor may recommend you take a daily multivitamin or certain dietary supplements.

Food Hypersensitivity

Studies show that some RA patients believe certain foods--dairy products and processed meats, especially--worsen symptoms or cause the disease to flare up. However, there is no widespread or concrete evidence to back up this claim or to say it's applicable to all people with the disease. Talk with your doctor if you believe your joint inflammation worsens after you eat certain foods. You may want to avoid that food for a while and monitor the results.

Other Management Techniques

Successfully managing arthritis requires following your doctor's recommended treatments and living an RA-friendly lifestyle. You can help reduce the impact of flare-ups and keep them under control by: performing regular, moderate exercise; listening to your body and resting when you're tired or in pain; getting enough sleep; avoiding caffeine and alcohol; and identifying and managing stressors.

Expert Insight

Because RA is a progressive condition that can, in severe cases, lead to severe disabilities, depression is common among RA patients. This can also lead to a decreased appetite and problems with eating and nutrition. Discuss the correlation between food and RA with your doctor, asking whether changing your eating habits might help you manage the disease.

Removing A Kidney Stone

Kidney stones are stones that develop out of minerals and acids in urine. The substances build up and form a stone that becomes very painful to pass. Symptoms may include severe pain around the kidney along with fever and chills. Although the kidney stones may feel extremely painful they will often pass after consuming a lot of water. At times, the stone will not break down and medical attention must be sought to remove the stone surgically.

Description

A kidney stone forms out of substances in urine that build up and unable to pass through the urine. These stones can form from calcium, magnesium and ammonia, uric acid and cystine stones. Smaller stones can be broken down and flushed from the kidneys in the urine, through the intake of large quantities of water. Larger stones may get stuck in the urethra, ureter or bladder and may become very painful and difficult to flush.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a kidney stone include lower back and lower abdominal pain around the kidney, painful urination, blood in the urine or urine that is excessively cloudy and bad smelling. Fever and chills often come when a kidney stone is at a more serious point and sometimes nausea and vomiting follow the severe pain.

Treatment

Kidney stones can be passed through the urine at home by drinking a minimum of twelve glasses of water. Adding apple cider vinegar is said to be very effective in removing a kidney stone and eating fresh parsley is also said to be helpful. Caffeine and other acidic foods such as red meat, should be avoided while trying to pass and recover from kidney stones. Water and rest are the best cures for treating kidney stones.

Removal

There are a few techniques used by doctors for removing a kidney stone. One method is to apply shock waves to the stone so that it breaks down into smaller pieces and is able to pass through the urine. The stone may also be removed through tunnel surgery which involves cutting into the back to remove the stone or ureteroscope which involves inserting a wire with a camera on it through the urethra to pull out the stone or destroy it.

Prevention

Making sure that 8 to 12 cups of water are consumed daily is a very important step in preventing future kidney stones. Adding a daily dosage of 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar to your water will also help to keep the kidneys clear. It is essential to get enough fiber in the diet so that waste can effectively be eliminated. Build up slowly to eating 20 to 30 grams of fiber daily. Exercise is highly recommended for toning and keeping the kidneys performing well.

Overcome Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia is the irrational fear of tight or enclosed spaces--not so much the space itself, but the inability to escape from it. Serious cases of claustrophobia can prevent people from necessary activities of life, even something as simple as driving a car. As with most fears, many with it may feel it is impossible to overcome. But ultimately, understanding and rationality is all it may take.

Instructions

1. Understand exactly what causes your claustrophobia. Try to remember if there was an incident from your past that led to this fear. It could also be from a family member who suffers the same.

2. Talk with a doctor or therapist. They can be the best at determining the cause and solution. Being able to overcome your fear and function in society is worth the financial cost.

3. Talk with people who have also suffered from claustrophobia and overcome it. Look for local support groups where people talk about these experiences.

4. Find ways to calm your body and focus your mind. This is one of the biggest steps toward overcoming fear. It could involve meditation or maybe just taking deep breaths.

5. Put yourself in a situation that causes your fear to emerge. This should include whatever specifically triggers that fear, such as a small elevator, a room with no window or inside a car.

6. Think of more positive, rational thoughts that replace the negative ones that cause the fear. These thoughts are what drive the emotion and action. This is known as cognitive behavioral therapy.

What Are The Causes Of Chronic Sinus Infection

Chronic sinus infection, or sinusitis, is a common problem; it is estimated that 37 million Americans suffer from a chronic sinus infection every year. In order to prevent and treat a chronic sinus infection, you will first need to know what is causing it.

The Common Cold

The cold is the most common cause of chronic sinus infection because it causes the sinuses to become inflamed. If a chronic sinus infection is caused by a cold, it will usually go away within two weeks without treatment.

The Flu

The flu causes our noses to be filled with mucus. Usually, the flu will only last a week, but it often leaves our sinuses inflamed, causing infection.

Hay Fever

Outdoors, our noses are exposed to dust particles and other allergens, which block our nasal passages, causing a chronic sinus infection.

Fungus

Fungus, such as black mold, can be found in moist and dark places. If nothing is done to remove the fungus, it can be inhaled and cause chronic sinus infection.

Acid Reflux Disease

In recent studies, acid reflux disease, or GERD, can cause chronic sinus infections. Although the acid does not reach the sinuses, it increases inflammation of the nasal lining, which then blocks the sinuses, causing infection.

Eyelift Surgery Procedures

An eyelifit can keep your eyes youthful-looking.

People say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. It's no wonder that eyelift surgery procedures are becoming popular. In addition to enhancing your looks, this procedure can improve vision if your upper lids are sagging to the point of reducing vision, according to DocShop.com.

Function

During eyelift surgery, the surgeon removes excess skin that is giving the face a droopy, tired look. By lifting and reattaching the remaining skin, the surgeon gives your face a more youthful appearance. If the excess skin is obstructing your vision, removing it will improve your sight.

Advancements

A newer method of eyelift surgery uses lasers to make incisions. This significantly cuts down on bleeding, which also reduces post surgery risks. The results are the same as with the traditional type of eyelift surgery.

Laser eyelid surgery takes between one to three hours, and you will probably be under local anesthesia and a sedative, according to DocShop.com. However, because there is no cutting with a knife or scalpel, laser eyelid surgery is usually an outpatient procedure. If you choose this method, be sure that you have someone that will drive you to and home from the surgery and someone who can stay with you for the first night, states the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Recovery

According to DocShop.com, there will be less swelling, discoloration and bruising with laser surgery. You will have a shorter recovery time as well. With traditional eyelift surgery, you can expect recovery to take several weeks. Patients can experience redness and swelling. During this time, you must make sure your eyes get plenty of rest. In addition, until you heal, you should wear darkly tinted sunglasses, reports the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Considerations

Most people are awake under local anesthesia during a traditional eyelift procedure. However, you can request general anesthesia, which puts you to sleep, if you wish. Furthermore, while scarring is minimal with traditional eyelift surgery, there is even less chance of scarring with laser surgery, reports DocShop.com. Although the results for laser eyelift surgery are long-lasting or even permanent for some people, others may require a touch-up.

Warning

According to DocShop.com, it is important the surgeon does not overdo the correction during your eyelift. Otherwise, you may end up looking permanently surprised.

Reiki Training

Formal training in Usui-Tibetan Reiki involves four different levels: Reiki I, Reiki II, ART (Advanced Reiki Training) and Master. Training is scaffolded, with each level providing information and access to different healing symbols.

Reiki I

Reiki I training is often accompanied by a hands-on session in which students are invited to use certain hand positions and their knowledge of the Power Symbol---the first of six sacred symbols and the only symbol revealed at this juncture in training---to perform energy healing on one another.

Reiki II

In Reiki II, students continue to learn about Reiki's healing powers, and their knowledge is supplemented with two additional symbols---the Mental/Emotional Symbol and the Distant Healing Symbol.

ART (Advanced Reiki Training)

In ART, or Advanced Reiki Training, students receive the Soul Healing Symbol. In some traditions, this is the final and highest symbol, although in the Tibetan tradition there are two "extra" symbols bestowed during Master Level.

Master Level

Master Level training is the capstone of Reiki training, and bestows upon the recipient permission to attune others to the Reiki system. Students in a Master Level class receive the Tibetan version of the Soul Healing Symbol, as well as the Master Symbol.

Expert Insight

Reiki Masters, as with all Reiki students, are expected to uphold and honor the tradition, the teachings and the spirit of the healing system by doing no harm and only providing good with the knowledge they have achieved.

What Are The Causes Of Hip Problems

Hip problems can literally cripple you if the pain gets too heavy and the movement too restricted. These ailments can come about from a number of different causes, most of which can be treated with surgery, physical therapy or medication.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a major cause of hip problems, especially with older people. Types of arthritis include osteoarthristis, which affects bones; rheumatoid arthritis, which affects joints; traumatic arthritis, caused by repeated trauma, and a host of others.

Fractures

A broken or cracked pelvis or hip bone can also stir up hip problems. Falling is a major cause for these fractures and those affected may not always be immediately aware the fractures exist.

Inflammation

Hip problems are also the byproduct of an inflammation of the hip's surrounding tissues and joints. Bursitis is marked by an inflamed bursa, or the sac between the tendons; tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendons; and synovitis is the swelling of the joint lining.

Other

Athletes may also fall prey to hip problems through injuries such as micro-tears, sprains or strains in the muscles surrounding the hip area. One more cause may be a long-term regimen of cortisone injections.

Children

Hip problems may strike children due to a hip congenital dislocation. Perthes' disease, marked by insufficient blood to the top of the femur and mainly affecting boys ages 5 through 10, is another cause.

Make Homemade Scented Dusting Powder

Dusting powder provides soothing relief for skin that has been irritated by exposure to heat and moisture. A light coat of dusting powder also prevents further chafing. Powder forms a kind of anti-friction coating that allows your skin to rub against skin, clothing or shoes without any irritation. Many people prefer to avoid talcum powder---made from ground minerals---because it's not good to breathe. Arrowroot, corn or rice starch are good substitutes for talcum. They are made from grain that's been dried and powdered. These steps will show you make homemade scented dusting powder at a fraction of the commercial price.

Instructions

1. Start with a clean bowl. You may use a mixture of the three starches, or just use one kind. With gloved hands, mix the powders together in a mixing bowl.

2. Using the essential oil of your choice, add drop by drop and mix it through the powder. Use your hands and lift the powder up slowly and carefully until the scent is mixed through. You will see small clumps where the starch is wet.

3. Using a flour sifter or a fine-mesh strainer, sift the powder back and forth until there are no more clumps.

4. Put the scented powder into containers and enjoy.

5. You can buy supplies, get complete recipes and even find instructional videos at the website for Snowdrift Farms, listed in

Diffuse Essential Oils With A Humidifier

Diffuse Essential Oils with a Humidifier

Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts from plants and are used in a variety of ways to improve the smell of your house, office or room. They are also used to improve moods and sooth minds. You can use essential oils in your bath, in lotions or beauty products, household cleaning and even bug repellents. One popular way to diffuse the smell of essential oils is to put the oil in a humidifier. The humidifier then spreads the scent of your essential oil throughout the entire room.

Instructions

1. Open the water chamber of your humidifier. This is the area where you pour the water into the humidifier.

2. Add three to nine drops of the essential oil. The scent you choose is completely up to you, so select a scent that you're drawn to. Some popular choices include eucalyptus, lavender and rose.

3. Turn the humidifier on and let it run through the night. If you want to use the humidifier during the day, add three to nine more drops of essential oil as the scent wears off.

Benefits Of A Protein Only Diet

The benefits of high protein diets are still a source of debate, but a substantial amount of research favors the results, including weight loss and improvement in health and energy levels (see Resources).

Appetite Control

Proteins take longer to digest than carbohydrates. Therefore, when protein is eaten, the feeling of satiety is extended during the lengthier metabolic process of digestion (see Resources).

Insulin Response

Proteins stimulate only a minimal insulin response and help avoid the rapid energy swings associated with eating some carbohydrates (see Resources).

Muscles

Protein builds muscle mass, the goal of most dieters because muscle tissue is metabolically active and burns more calories than fat. Increasing muscle allows dieters to avoid a drastic decrease in caloric intake in order to lose weight (see Resources).

Bonus for Dieters

Some proteins--red meats, for example--are considered thermogenic or negative calorie foods because they require more calories to digest than they contain (see Resources).

Bodybuilding

Weightlifters and bodybuilders often use protein-only diets along with exercise to facilitate the development of muscle mass (see Resources).

Stop Birth Control Pills During Premenopause

Many women look forward to going through menopause because it means the end of unpleasant periods. However, right before starting menopause, a woman goes through premenopause (perimenopause), which occurs three to five years before her final period. A lot of women take birth control pills, but at some point a woman has to get off of the pill as she approaches menopause. There are a few things that you need to do if you want to stop taking birth control pills during premenopause.

Instructions

1. Visit your doctor for an evaluation. Before you can stop birth control during premenopause, your doctor needs to give you a complete evaluation (along with medical tests) in order to determine the best time for you to stop taking the pill. Your doctor must also check your follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to find out how close you are to menopause. Depending on the type of pill you are taking, your doctor may start off by switching you to a lower dosage birth control pill first. Switching you to a low-dose birth control pill first can help your body transition a lot easier during premenopause.

2. Make adjustments to your diet. Before you stop taking birth control pills, you should establish a healthy diet to follow, which should consist of plenty whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Be sure to add soy to your diet and reduce or eliminate your caffeine and alcohol intake. Eating healthful food can keep you feeling good, gives you energy and helps to reduce the side effects you may experience when you stop taking birth control pills during premenopause (such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep disorders, mood swings and decreased sexual desire).

3. Get plenty of exercise. In addition to eating healthy, you should participate in physical activities, like walking, jogging, aerobics, tennis or swimming. Engaging in a regular exercise program helps to keep you healthy and fit.

4. Complete your last pack of pills. Your doctor will inform you when you can stop taking birth control pills. It is important to complete the entire pack of pills for that cycle and do not skip any of them.

5. Take a natural progesterone supplement. After you stop taking birth control pills, you may need to use a progesterone product to help with the side effects. Since the synthetic progestins in birth control pills typically reduce the levels of natural progesterone in your body, your doctor may suggest that you take the natural progesterone supplement to support the hormonal imbalance. This product comes in the form of a pill, vaginal cream and patch, and your doctor can help you choose the appropriate one to use.

6. Use hormonal therapy to treat the side effects. Depending on how close you are to entering menopause, your doctor may switch you to estrogen replacement therapy or hormone replacement therapy immediately after you stop taking birth control pills. HRT can help you better cope with the common side effects of menopause.

How Is Magnetic Hematite Made

Many people believe hematite has healing powers.

Hematite is a weakly magnetic stone. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks both made good use of this stone, and it is common today for it to be used in jewelry. Many people believe that hematite promotes physical or emotional healing; some people make and sell jewelry made out of hematite for this purpose.

What is Hematite?

Hematite is a stone made from iron ore. Its name comes from the Greek word for red, as hematite stones are often reddish brown. Hematite can also be gray or steel-colored; however, there is always a rust-colored streak in every hematite stone.

Hematite and Magnetism

Hematite's magnetic properties were the subject of debate by scientists in the 1950s. The stone appears to be very weakly magnetic; it displays some magnetic capabilities at high temperatures. Large magnets can be used to attract sufficient quantities of hematite, removing them from waste tailings of iron mines.

History of Hematite

Hematite in powdered form has been used as a red chalk for thousands of years. The earliest known use of hematite dates back 164,000 years; more famously, hematite powder was used in Egyptian tombs to stop intruders from entering. Hematite powder can be irritating to eyes and skin and can be lethal if inhaled; archaeologists found a sarcophagus covered with it in 2001. If tomb robbers disturbed the sarcophagus, the hematite would fly up into the air and get in the robbers' eyes and lungs.

Hematite and Healing

Many people believe that hematite has healing powers. Pagans and people interested in energy healing believe that the weak magnetism in hematite reacts to energy in the human body to keep it in balance. People often wear hematite bracelets or necklaces to promote healing in themselves.

Making Hematite Jewelry

Hematite jewelry is fairly easy to make. Most jewelry makers thread together hematite beads of different sizes to create an interesting pattern and maximize healing energy. All you need to make a hematite necklace are some wire, pliers and different sizes hematite beads. If you do not want to make hematite jewelry yourself, you can easily find it for sale in flea markets or at fairs featuring new age or alternative medicine materials.

Kapalbhati Yoga & Weight Loss

Kapalbhati Yoga & Weight Loss

Yoga is an ancient health practice that dates back more than 5,000 years. Although it is most well known for developing balance and flexibility, it is also beneficial for managing stress and weight loss. While asana practice (postures) is a big part of yoga, pranayama (breathing) is essential to achieve all the benefits of yoga. One such breathing exercise, kapalbhati, has many health benefits, including aiding in weight loss.

Meaning

"Kapal" means skull (or head), and "bhati" means shining. Therefore, the term kapalbhati (shining head) implies an individual who is enlightened. As with all forms of yogic meditation and pranayama, the ultimate goal is to lead the practitioner on a path to enlightenment. However, kapalbhati has a few more practical uses as well. Because of its forceful use of the abdomen, it is an excellent exercise for toning the diaphragm and upper abdominal muscles. The powerful breathing technique helps to increase oxygen flow to the bloodstream, energizing the body, and is a wonderful exercise for cleansing the lungs and blood. It is traditionally used in yoga as a form of kriyas, or cleansing.

Technique

As with most yogic breathing exercises, no special equipment is required. Because it is done sitting down in a comfortable position, just about anyone can practice kapalbhati.

To begin, the practitioner sits up straight, either cross-legged on the floor or sitting on the edge of a chair. The eyes are kept closed. Next is deep breathing for five or six breaths. This should always be done through the nose, inhaling first into the lower abdomen, then into the chest, and finally exhaling slowly, allowing the body to relax.

For kapalbhati, one should take a deep breath in, filling the whole abdomen with air (allowing it to expand like a balloon). The air is then expelled forcefully from the body, contracting the abdominal muscles back toward the spine. This is similar to the movement made when blowing the nose. The inhalations and expulsions should be repeated in rapid succession, pumping the stomach like a bellows. One should begin with 20 expulsions, then rest for one minute, breathing naturally.

This process can be repeated two or three more times. The next set should be 30 expulsions, and 40 for the last set, increasing the speed of the breaths slightly with each set.

Effects

When first beginning kapalbhati practice, one may become somewhat lightheaded. This will subside as breathing becomes more efficient. Kapalbhati breathing exercises can be performed every day. One may choose to practice in the morning, upon rising, or just before beginning a regular exercise routine. One should avoid doing this right before retiring to bed, as it can have an energizing effect on the body.

Regular kapalbhati practice helps cleanse the lungs, and increase oxygen uptake in the bloodstream. It also helps to increase lung capacity, increasing endurance in sports and other physical activities. This exercise should be utilized in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise routine for maximum results.

Weight Loss Tips

Kapalbhati is an important addition to your weight loss plan. This is not limited to, but should include: eating healthy, whole (unprocessed) foods, drinking plenty of water, getting adequate rest, and finding some form of exercise to do each day (walking, jogging, biking, or yoga).

Caution

Individuals who have heart problems, lung disease or circulation problems should practice kapalbhati under trained supervision. If trying this for the first time, it is advisable to watch the instructional video below first.

Osteosarcoma is one of the most common and prevalent forms of bone cancer, which accounts for about 35% of all the bone disorders. Osteosarcoma is generally characterized by development of cancerous properties in the osteoblast cells that are present lining the outer surface of the human bone. In most of the cases osteosarcoma generally occurs near the region just under the knee, although the cause for such occurrence is still not clear.

Causes of Osteosarcoma

Despite repeated attempts over the years by scientists all over, the exact cause or factor leading to the development of osteosarcoma is still unknown. However according to a recent study conducted by Mayo clinic, exposure to radiations emitted from chemical elements such as Fluorine and Radium; mainly found in contaminated water, can often increase the chances of developing osteosarcoma in individuals as they lead to the development cancerous properties in the cells of the body due to the radiations emitted by them.

Pain

Pain is most common symptom that is associated with osteosarcoma. The person might experience different forms of pains such as bone pain and localized pain. Bone pain is a form of pain that a patient of osteosarcoma generally experiences near the affected bone. This pain worsens during night due to immobility of the bone while sleeping. On the other hand local pain is a type of pain generally experienced in the entire body and commonly around the back and lower hip region.

Swelling

Another common symptom associated with osteosarcoma is swelling of the bones and the joints. In cases of osteosarcoma where the tumor is large, this tumor can sometimes protrude outwards thus leading to a swelling or inflammation near the joints or the affected bones.

Other Symptoms

Other common symptoms that are generally associated with osteosarcoma include high fever, tiredness, excessive weight loss, brittleness of the bones which thus leads to fractures of the bones, difficulty in moving during any form of physical activity due to extreme pain that is experienced as a result of osteosarcoma and in some rare cases anemia is also associated with osteosarcoma.

Treatment Techniques used to Cure Osteosarcoma

Generally the treatment forms that are administered to patients vary drastically from patient to patient depending upon the size of the tumor, and the stage at which the cancer is diagnosed and the overall health of the patient.

However some of the common treatment methods that are used include Neoadjuvant chemotherapy and Radiation therapy. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is a form of chemotherapy method which is generally administered to patients suffering from osteosarcoma which is often succeeded by surgical treatment.

Radiation therapy on the other hand is a treatment form in which the patient is often exposed to high energy wave like X-rays and gamma rays. This exposure to waves help in destroying the cancerous cells as well as the cancerous tumors present in the body due to the intense radiations emitted by them.
