The 1950s bring flashbacks of a long list of iconic images from that decade. Especially in American culture, the 1950s were the days of diners, poodle skirts and leather jackets and when teens danced to rock 'n' roll on the television show, "American Bandstand." With everything that emerged during the 50s, it shouldn't be difficult to create cakes with a 50s theme.
Music Cakes
A coin-operated machine for playing records, the jukebox is an iconic image of the 1950s. For a jukebox cake, use bright colors of icing, such as neon green, yellow and orange. Decorate the cake with buttons and scribble black lines beside each button to represent song titles. You even can use black icing to draw musical notes and vinyl records around the jukebox.
Automobile Cakes
Make a cake shaped like a '54 Chevy, a classic car of the 1950s. The body of the car can be painted any color that you wish, but colors common during the time of its popularity had specific names, including horizon blue, surf green and Romany red. Add a whimsical touch to a convertible Chevy cake by creating people out of fondant to ride inside the car if you can make a three-dimensional cake. Alternately, you can create a cake to look like a 1950 Buick Roadmaster, another classic car of the 50s.
Pop-Culture Cakes
Diners were popular hangouts in the 50s. One idea for a diner cake is to create a black and white checkered border around the cake. Find or make such cake decorations as miniature milkshakes, burgers and toy cars like the '54 Chevy. Use icing to draw an image of a couple dancing to music, with the girl wearing a poodle skirt and boy in a white T-shirt and jeans. Also, you can create a three-dimensional cake that looks like the outside or the inside of an actual diner.
Fashion Cakes
Fashion figured largely into the rock 'n' roll lifestyle of the 50s. You can create a cake in the shape of a couple performing a 50s dance, such as the boogie, swing or hand jive, and while wearing clothing popular during that time. Use icing to color the girl's poodle skirt, bobby socks, shirt and small neck scarf. Icing also can be used to draw an actual poodle on the skirt. Use icing again to color the boy's cuffed blue jeans and T-shirt, black leather jacket or school varsity sweater.
