Relieve a Teething Fever
Teething can cause a great deal of stress and discomfort in a baby, which may lead to issues beyond the pain in his or her gums. A teething fever can sometimes be the result. Though it bears monitoring, it's usually nothing to be concerned about and you can take steps to help relieve the baby's fever while she is teething.
Instructions
1. Give the baby a cold teething ring to chew on. Teething rings can be chilled in the refrigerator (though experts discourage placing it in the freezer since a ring that is too cold will hurt the baby's gums) and given to the baby to gnaw on. It will help soothe the gums and relieve the discomfort of a fever.
2. Wipe the baby down in a bath of lukewarm water. Hot and cold water both cause problems of their own during a teething fever, but lukewarm water will help bleed off some of the excessive heat. Leave the baby slightly damp after the bath: the water will help cool him down further as it evaporates.
3. Refrain from bundling the baby up. The instinctive response for comforting a baby is to swaddle her in blankets or heavy clothes--which only adds to the heat of the fever. Keep her clothing comfortable, but make sure her skin can bleed off the heat comfortably.
4. Feed the baby cold slices of banana. It will help relieve irritated gums and the softness of the banana will keep the baby from choking on it.
5. Massage the baby's gums with your finger. That will stimulate the flow of blow and relieve the itching and discomfort of teething. As the inflammation is reduced, the fever should diminish as well.
6. Apply medical remedies as prescribed by your doctor. Aspirin and adult medications are never recommended for a baby, but certain types of ibuprofen are designed for children and will do much to help relieve a teething fever. Advil and Tylenol both sell droplets specifically for reducing infant fever on their websites (see Resources below) and your doctor may be able to recommend other medications as well.
