Natural Help For Adrenal Problems

Adrenal problems can manifest as a general malaise with a host of symptoms, including body aches and pains, fatigue, nervous tension, sleeplessness and digestive issues. It is often referred to as "adrenal fatigue" by alternative-health providers, a condition that is not recognized as an official medical diagnosis. There are dietary and other steps you can take, in consultation with your physician, to try to remedy your symptoms.

The Theory

Your adrenal glands produce various hormones essential to your overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, "adrenal insufficiency" (also known as Addison's disease) is a medical term for the insufficient production of a critical adrenal hormone(s) due to an underlying health condition. Alternative and certain other health-care providers assert that "adrenal fatigue" is a less severe form of adrenal insufficiency that is often triggered by chronic stress. The theory holds that a small decline in hormonal levels is sufficient to make you feel ill, tired and depressed, but doesn't represent such a drop that it would be flagged by a standard blood test.

Diet

Adopt a well-balanced, high-fiber diet loaded with vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, legumes, fruits, nuts and healthy fats, such as olive oil. Divide your daily calories among five or six small meals per day. This will help keep your glucose (blood sugar) level steady and help prevent the afternoon fatigue that comes with spikes and dips in blood sugar.

Exercise

Engage in at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Exercise keeps the circulatory system healthy, helps reduce stress, keeps your weight under control and releases endorphins for an increased sense of well-being. If the underlying cause of your adrenal problems is stress or depression, exercise is a clear choice to combat the condition.

Supplements

Alternative health practitioners recommend the following vitamins and supplements: vitamins C and E, vitamin B-100 complex, niacin (vitamin B-3), pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5), magnesium citrate, "liquid trace" minerals, free-form amino acids, proline and adrenal glandular supplements.

Alternative practitioners also recommend the following herbal supplements: rhodiola rosea, to reduce fatigue caused by stress and to improve memory and concentration; ashwagandha, to help heal the digestive and nervous systems; and Siberian ginseng, which is said to stimulate the adrenal glands, increase alertness and help the body cope with stress.

Caution

Consult with your doctor before making any changes to your diet or exercise regimen. Bear in mind that even natural supplements can react adversely with medications or may be otherwise contra-indicated, so let your physician know everything you are taking to try to treat your symptoms.
