Braces have long been the only option for people seeking perfectly aligned teeth. They can be uncomfortable to wear and may cause self-consciousness in some people. Today, there are alternatives to braces, and you should be aware of the benefits and trade-offs so you can choose an alternative that is right for you.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that are bonded to the front of the tooth. They are usually only 1 millimeter in thickness in order to make them look like natural teeth. These do not straighten teeth the way braces do, but they do even them out, making them appear to be more aligned. Veneers can help prevent self-consciousness without having to go through the hassle of braces. Sometimes, orthodontists use a porcelain veneer to place over the stub of a tooth after a root canal.
Retainers
Dental retainers may serve two purposes: to reinforce newly aligned teeth after braces have been removed; and to be used alone to correct an overbite or underbite. After braces have been removed, retainers assist the muscles in the jaw, gums and mouth to adjust to the new position of the teeth. Also, depending on the severity of an overbite or underbite, a retainer may be worn at all times or may only be used at night. Since retainers are made of thin metal bands, they are less visible and less obtrusive than braces.
Invisalign System
Invisalign is one of the newest methods on the market to help straighten teeth. A cast is made of your individual teeth structure and you are fitted with a clear mold that helps align your teeth. Every two weeks, these molds are replaced with new ones that have been calibrated to shift teeth into place. Since this plan is custom-made for you, your orthodontist will know design each mold so the alignment process works best for your needs. Most often, this can be done over the course of a year and many people prefer the transparent aligners over braces.
