Why Are Lobsters Helpful

Lobsters are tasty and nutritious.


Some people may think lobsters are just tasty crustaceans from the sea, but lobsters are actually good for the human body. Lobsters are full of nutrition and vitamins that are good for human health and help boost the immune and nervous systems. Lobsters also contain less fat than other foods such as beef or pork, which means it does not contribute weight gain or clogged arteries.


Nutrition & Vitamins


Lobsters are rich in sodium, potassium, copper and phosphorus, which is good for the kidneys and overall energy production of the body. Lobsters also contain calcium and magnesium, and small doses of iron, zinc, manganese, selenium and omega 3 fatty acids. These are healthy elements that help maintain the bones, muscles and various organs. Lobsters are also filled with beneficial vitamins such as vitamin A, E, B6, niacin and pantothenic acid, which is good for the skin and nervous system.


Calories


Lobsters are relatively low in calories. One hundred grams of lobster meat contains roughly 90 calories, with the calories from fat at around 8. This is incredibly low compared to ground beef hamburger patties. One hundred grams of ground beef hamburger patty alone contains more than 300 calories, not counting the rest of the burger.


Health Benefits








The low level of carbohydrates in lobsters makes it a good meal for those who need to limit their intake of food containing this particular compound. People who are arthritic can also benefit from eating lobster because the copper and phosphorous in the meat help ease symptoms of arthritis. The omega 3 fatty acids and selenium within lobsters help keep the human heart and the nervous and immune systems healthy.








Environmental Impact


Eating more seafood, such as lobster, instead of land-based food, such as cows, pigs and chickens, is ultimately better for the environment, according to professor Ray Hilborn of the University of Washington. According to Hilborn's studies, the ecological impact of people eating more wild seafood is much less than consuming land-based animals, which require energy and resources to maintain. As seafood such as lobsters aren't raised on farms that contain pesticides and antibiotics either, it is overall healthier for the human body than eating beef or pork would be.
