Definition Of Object Recognition

Object recognition is a term that refers to the visual perception of objects. This concept mainly pertains to items with which people are familiar. The objects differ in angles, sizes and viewpoints.

Partial Obstruction

Research on object recognition in humans concludes that many objects are recognized even if the view is partially obstructed. If something is hidden, to some extent, behind another object, a human still recognizes the object.

Size

A part of object recognition is that humans recognize objects regardless of the size of the item. For example, a human can recognize a picture of an airplane as easily as standing next to a real airplane. The size of the object does not matter for object recognition.

Other Factors

Humans recognize objects no matter how they are oriented. If an object is upside down or sideways, humans still recognize the object. Object recognition research determined that humans can recognize objects even if they change in texture, pose or formation. Humans also can recognize familiar objects in partial light, bright light or alternate types of lighting.
