One type of dental cement for restorative and prosthodontic use consists of zinc oxide and eugenol, or ZOE. ZOE is useful as a temporary cement for crowns and fillings until a final appliance can be permanently affixed by a dentist.
Instructions
Set Up Mixing Area
1. Prepare your workspace by placing the absorbent paper towel or chuck on the table or counter.
2. Place the cloth directly on top of the chuck to reduce slipping while mixing.
3. Place the glass slab on top of the cloth.
4. Put a small mound of zinc oxide on one side of the glass slab (off-center).
5. Place your metal spatula, bottle of eugenol and eyedropper on the chuck within easy reach in your workspace.
Mixing Dental Cement
6. Using the dropper, dispense several drops of eugenol on the center of the slab.
7. Using the metal spatula, separate a small amount of zinc oxide powder from the mound and push it into the pool of eugenol.
8. Use the flat side of your spatula to thoroughly mix the eugenol and powder.
9. Consolidate the mixture by scraping with the spatula.
10. Add a small amount of powder to the mixture until the desired consistency (a thin paste, similar to cake frosting) is achieved.
