Prevent Dowager'S Hump

Dowager's hump, or medically known as kyphosis, is a condition that occurs as a result of an advanced form of osteoporosis. The patient develops fractures that give her a hunched-over appearance. Dowager's humps are often caused by wedge fractures and occur in the patient's vertebrae. There are treatments if you happen to develop this condition, but taking preventive measures can help reduce your risk of developing dowager's hump.

Instructions

1. Get advice from your physician. Your doctor can advise you on different ways to safely prevent dowager's hump while treating your osteoporosis.

2. Maintain good posture. Both men and women with poor posture are more likely to develop dowager's hump later in life.

3. Take medicines that improve the strength of your bones. If you have osteoporosis, it is important to take all medications prescribed by your doctor in order to prevent dowager's hump. Potential prescriptions include Actonel, Reclast and Fosamax. An over-the-counter calcium supplement is another method to prevent dowager's hump. The recommended calcium dosage is between 1,000 and 1,200 mg per day.

4. Exercise as a way to improve muscle strength to prevent dowager's hump. Spend a lot of time walking and perform low-impact aerobic workouts. You can also use weight training with small hand weights to help strengthen muscles. Take care when you exercise in order to avoid any injuries that can worsen your condition and actually cause dowager's hump.

5. Stop smoking. Smoking can cause bone loss, which can cause a person with osteoporosis to develop dowager's hump. Also avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages.

6. Adjust your diet. Besides a calcium-rich diet, you will also want to eat more foods high in vitamin D. Vitamin D can help your body better absorb calcium. Food choices you can select are salmon, tuna, milk, eggs, liver and cheese.
