Alternate Treatment For Glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused by inadequate drainage of aqueous humor, a fluid that passes through the front of the eye. This accumulation causes pressure to build up and damage the tissue in the eye, causing vision loss and potentially blindness. Alternative treatments alone cannot adequately treat this condition and are most effective when used in conjunction with standard medicines. Herbal medicines should be used for about four months to reduce eye pressure and stop progression of the disease.

Herbal Treatments

Be sure to discuss use of herbal medicine with your doctor.

Bilberry is one of the most effective herbs for treating eye problems. For glaucoma, it inhibits blood vessel damage in the eye and improves night vision. Take 360 milligrams daily. Eyebright is good for general eye health; use the extract as directed on the product label. Gingko prevents blood vessel problems and reduces the loss of peripheral vision. Take 240 milligrams in one dose every day. Do not use gingko if you are taking blood thinning medications. Hawthorn supports capillary walls and makes them stronger. Take 250 milligrams three times a day.

The traditional Chinese formula commonly used to treat glaucoma is Five Ingredient Powder with Poria. It helps drain fluids and relieves eye pressure. Take as directed on the product label.

Other Supplements

The following supplements all provide anti-oxidant support, which is vital for reducing tissue damage and destruction and should be used daily. You do not need to take every single one. Vitamin C: 500 to 1,000 milligrams. Conenzyme Q10: 100 to 200 milligrams at bedtime. Alpha lipoic acid: 25 to 50 milligrams twice a day. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are antioxidants that specifically support eye health; Take two to six milligrams and one to six milligrams respectively.

Magnesium reduces the amount of pressure in the eye by relaxing the blood vessels. Take 600 milligrams daily for one month.

Other Suggestions

Eat lots of berries. Like the bilberry herb, they contain substances that prevent eye damage. Avoid anything that can raise eye pressure such as tobacco, caffeine, and alcohol. Body inversion exercises such as doing sit ups on slanted board lowers eye pressure. Do your best to avoid steroid drugs; they destroy collagen structures contained in the eye.
