Gastroenteritis is more commonly known as the stomach flu. It results in inflammation and irritation in the stomach and intestines. The most common cause of gastroenteritis is a viral infection, but other causes include food-borne illnesses, bacteria and parasites. There is no medication that can treat gastroenteritis, but some over-the-counter medicines may help ease some symptoms. It's important for people with gastroenteritis to get plenty of rest and try to stay hydrated during the duration of the illness.
Duration
Depending of what causes a case of gastroenteritis, symptoms can last between two and 10 days. It is more common to experience symptoms for a short period of between one and three days. In the case of a virus, symptoms generally appear one to three days after a person becomes infected, and the duration can depend on the ability of a person's immune system to fight the infection.
Diarrhea
One of the most common and bothersome symptoms of gastroenteritis is diarrhea. Many people with the stomach flu experience several bouts of diarrhea during the illness. If you experience bloody diarrhea it could be a sign of a different, more serious infection, and you should contact your doctor.
Nausea
Most people who have gastroenteritis will develop persistent nausea or an upset stomach. Many people also experience a significant decrease in appetite because of the nausea and other symptoms. Abdominal cramps and bloating are also common.
Vomiting
Not all people with gastroenteritis will experience vomiting, but many will. If vomiting is severe and dehydration becomes a concern, try to drink small amounts of a rehydration solution such as Gatorade or Pedialyte frequently throughout the day.
Fever
A low-grade fever or less than 100 degrees sometimes is a symptom of gastroenteritis. A high fever may signify a different virus or medical condition.
Muscle Aches
Some people with gastroenteritis will experience muscle aches and headaches as a symptom of gastroenteritis. These generally are not too bothersome, but over-the-counter medications can help treat them.
