Use Acupuncture To Treat Hair Loss

Use Acupuncture to Treat Hair Loss

Part of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture seeks to maintain optimum health by stimulating individual acupoints across the body and moving the body's energy, or "Qi." Widely used for the treatment of ailments including chronic pain and nausea, acupuncture can also treat hair loss. Traditional Chinese medicine attributes hair loss to excess energy escaping through the top of the head, resulting in the expansion of your hair follicles and the loosening of hair.

Instructions

Use Acupuncture to Treat Hair Loss

1. Ask your primary care physician to refer you to a licensed acupuncture specialist.

2. Research the study and process to prepare for acupuncture. Knowing more of what to expect will ease your concerns and help with the overall process--and will also allow you to ask informed questions of the acupuncturist.

3. Meet with the acupuncturist and discuss your hair loss concerns. Together you can determine the cause for your hair loss, such as stress, diet inefficiencies or illness. The acupuncturist may ask about diet, appetite, energy level, lifestyle, sleep habits, and pain in the body. Women may be asked about their menstrual flow as a way to figure out the imbalance. The acupuncturist may also examine your tongue and feel your pulse at the wrist in order to analyze the reason behind the hair loss.

4. Restore life to your hair follicles by undergoing acupuncture, which clears energy blockages and restores the normal flow of Qi by placing fine, sterile needles at specific points in the body. Acupoints LU 7, which is at the thumb side of your wrist; GV 14, which is on the back of your neck; and GV 12 on your lower back treat hair loss. Other acupoints that promote hair growth include UB 13, in between your shoulder blades; LU 6, which is on the back of your hand; and LU9, located at the crease of the thumb side of your wrist.

5. See your acupuncturist once or twice a week. While the first treatment may last as long as an hour and a half because of initial paperwork, followup treatments won't last as long. An average length of time for treatment is 45 minutes. Continue treatment as determined by you and your acupuncturist.

6. Use a seven-star needle when at home to tap your bald spots and areas where hair is thinning. This will promote blood flow in your scalp, improving the state of your follicles. Such a needle can be obtained through your acupuncturist.
