Treat An Aneurysm

Treat an Aneurysm

An aneurysm is extremely serious and must be carefully monitored by a board-certified surgeon. Sometimes, the treatment is to watch and wait. Many other times, surgery is necessary and recommended.

Instructions

1. Reduce your blood pressure. Your doctor will prescribe antihypertensive drugs for you if your aneurysm is accompanied by high blood pressure.

2. Avoid overexertion, straining to move your bowels, picking up heavy objects, shoveling snow.

3. Maintain a healthy body weight and stop smoking. This reduces the stress on your heart and vessels.

4. Prepare for aneurysm surgery, as ordered by your surgeon. The night before your surgery, don't eat anything after 8 p.m., and remove any nail polish or jewelry. Wash your body with a good antimicrobial soap twice a day for two days before your surgery. Before your surgery, move your bowels. After your operation, you will be on bed rest for several hours to several days. Bedpans are awkward and difficult to use.

5. Relax as much as possible. Have faith in your surgeon.
