Naproxen Sodium Side Effects

Naproxen sodium, sold under brand names such as Aleve, is available by prescription or over the counter. Aleve is the most common brand name available without a prescription. It is most commonly used for pain management. Aleve is for short-term pain relief, while a prescription for naproxen sodium is for pain that is more serious and longer treatment.

Most Common

Common side effects of naproxen sodium are drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, heartburn, constipation, and upset stomach.

Unlikely

Stomach pain, swelling of the hands or feet, difficulty swallowing, fainting, irregular heartbeat, sudden weight gain, sudden mood changes, and severe headache are unlikely, but serious side effects.

Sensory

Naproxen sodium may cause some vision or hearing changes. These side effects are unlikely but very serious.

Rare

Naproxen sodium may cause serious bleeding in the stomach or intestines. These side effects are rarely fatal but are very serious.

Serious

Other serious side effects include chest pain, shortness of breath, slurred speech, persistent stomach pain, black stools, coffee grounds-like vomit, and weakness on one side of the body.
