Although there are federally-funded, state-funded and privately-funded drug and alcohol treatment programs, government-based programs remain an easily accessible, free alternative to drug abuse. They follow the group method and 12-step program for overcoming abuse, and may provide healthy alternatives to addiction.
Drug Abuse
Drugs that are typically abused include morphine, nicotine, cocaine, heroin, caffeine and prescription drugs. There are typically specific programs for each addiction type.
12-Step Program
The 12-step program is often the most effective way to overcome an addiction, be it drugs, alcohol or even gambling. It is a form of group therapy and used by most if not all government programs. Private programs, which require insurance or payment, may have more selective drug treatment programs.
Drug Support Groups and Centers
Government-based drug support groups and centers are available and do not always require dues or fees. These are government-funded free public services to help addicts. Sometimes they may have specialists who work closely with addicts to help them overcome an addiction.
Paying
State-funded and federally-funded programs are free to the public and may not need insurance. Some programs are covered by insurance. Some do not take insurance. Still others are non-profit and private but government-funded. Finding a specific program is dependent on the individual's financial status.
Vouchers
When President George W. Bush was in office, he endorsed a voucher system to allow religious organizations to be accepted as government-funded drug and alcohol treatment programs.
