Chiropractor & Seizures

Chiropractic care can make a difference in the lives of people suffering from epilepsy. The realignment performed on the spinal column by the chiropractor relieves pressure on nerves that may contribute to seizures.

Causes

Seizures, electrical miscommunications between the brain and the nerves that cause convulsions, spams, peculiar sensations and other symptoms, sometimes result from subluxation. Subluxation involves a spinal misalignment that puts pressure on nerve cells, interfering with normal nerve transmissions and causing abnormal electrical impulses.

Adjustment

Chiropractors correct spinal misalignment by gently shifting the bones back into their correct position. Instead of treating the epilepsy itself, the chiropractor treats the misalignment that causes nerve problems that either produce the seizures or make them worse, according to Stone Chiropractic.

Effects

Once the chiropractor has eliminated or reduced the spinal subluxation, the nerves can resume normal function. In the case of epilepsy caused by another condition, the improved nerve function can at least reduce the severity and frequency of the seizures. An International Chiropractic Pediatric Association study of 15 epileptic children found that all 15 experienced good results from the treatment.
