Safety Of Burdock Root

The burdock root, which grows in Europe and Asia, has long been used as remedy for conditions such as arthritis, colds and other viruses. It is used to take toxins out of the blood.

Function

Burdock root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine, along with plants, as a cure for colds and a source of vitamins. Although some modern doctors recommend it for treating cancer, its efficacy and safety for cancer is not known, according to the National Institute of Health.

Warning

Burdock root is considered safe for human consumption. It is a powerful diuretic, but too much use can result in excessive urination.

Allergies

Some people are allergic to burdock root, according to the NIH. People with allergies to ragweed, daisies and marigolds should take care with burdock. Although most allergies manifest a mild skin rash, severe reactions have been associated with burdock.

Misconceptions

According to the NIH, there have been reports of burdock tea being toxic, but there has been no conclusive confirmation.

Diabetes

Burdock can raise and lower blood-sugar levels, and anyone with diabetes should consult a doctor before taking it.
