Hip Bursitis Symptoms & Pain

Hip bursitis is a chronic and painful condition that can really limit your activity level. It is an inflammatory condition that can be caused due to an injury or overuse, or occur after hip surgery. It is a form of arthritis. Here are some specific symptoms to look for.

Identification

Bursa are fluid-filled sacs that are located in some joints. They act as a cushion between bones, soft tissues, tendons and muscles. They help to reduce friction as you move. Bursitis is an inflammation of this sac.

Types

There are three types of hip bursitis: trochanteric bursitis, ischialgluteal bursitis and iliopectineal bursitis.

Pain

The main symptom of hip bursitis is pain. With trochanteric bursitis, the pain is typically felt on the outside of the thigh. With ischialgluteal bursitis, the pain is near the buttocks. Pain in the groin area signals iliopectineal bursitis.

Swelling

The inflammation associated with bursitis can cause swelling in the hip joint. This can become worse after any activity that stretches or exerts force on the hip joint.

Stiffness

Another symptom of hip bursitis is stiffness in the hip and limited range of motion. This can be worse after sitting or lying down for some time.
