Pimples are clogged sebaceous glands in the skin that can appear anywhere on the body as a result of the collection of natural oil and debris in the pores.
Identification
The skin has a small, raised and reddened appearance due to inflammation and will sometimes present with a white surface (whitehead) directly over the pore, indicating bacterial contamination.
Significance
The body, in its attempt to clean pores, increases blood circulation to the skin area where white blood cells collect in an attempt to digest the debris and allow it to drain from the pore.
Prevention/Solution
Pimples can be prevented with diligent attention to a healthy lifestyle, including eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking enough water, adequate rest, plenty of fresh air and exercise, and avoiding undue emotional stress.
Considerations
Keeping the skin clean and free debris allows the pores to "breathe" and cleanse naturally without complications.
Theories/Speculation
It is believed that hormone imbalances can cause pimples, which is typically why teenagers and preteens, as well as some adults, get pimples.
Time Frame
It usually takes about 4 to 7 days for a pimple to resolve as the body works to eliminate the debris and bacteria, and it's important not to pick or squeeze pimples as this can result in the bacteria (usually Staphylococcus) to become embedded deeper into the skin resulting in a serious infection.
Potential
If you have a serious problem with pimples in the form of cysts or pustules, it might be a good idea to consult with a dermatologist or internist to make sure there are no underlying disease factors to consider.
