Eat Soup If Your Hands Shake

Shaky hands and eating soup don't go well together. If you're one of the many people who's hands shake due to a health condition, this is not news to you. And when eating soup becomes a problem due to shaky hands, social eating situations may suddenly seem to always include soup. In particular, shaky hands can make eating soup in a restaurant or other public place an embarrassing ordeal. There are ways to deal with shaky hands that can make soup eating less of a social hazard.

Instructions

1. Choose soup with a thick consistency, if possible. Thicker soups, like stews, will stick to your spoon and spill less.

2. Have extra napkins on hand. If your hands shake and cause a spill, you can wipe it up without attracting additional attention. Also place an extra napkin in your lap. The extra layers will protect your clothing.

3. Fill your soup bowl only half or three quarters full. If you are eating in a restaurant, ask your waiter to fill your soup bowl only part way. This way if shaky hands cause you to bump your soup bowl, spills will be less likely.

4. Use a large, deep spoon. A large deep spoon will contain the soup even if your hands shake a bit.

5. Fill your soup spoon only half way because the soup will be contained even if your hands shake.

6. Steady your forearm on the edge of the table. You may find that this minimizes shaking.

7. Use your other hand to steady your eating hand. You may not feel elegant, but it's better than spilling.

8. Lean over your soup bowl as you eat so that you do not have to move your hand as much.

9. Learn to eat soup with either your left or right hand. Some people who suffer from shaky hands notice that on any given day one hand will shake less than the other. Being able to choose which hand to use to eat soup can come in handy.
