Chest Congestion Treatment

Chest congestion is caused by excessive buildup of mucus and phlegm in the lungs. Symptoms of chest congestion include coughing, chest pain and difficulty breathing. Untreated chest congestion can lead to pneumonia, so you should try one of the treatments discussed here to relieve it.

Fluids

Hydrate your body by drinking plenty of water and juices. Drinking plenty of fluids help thin out and break up mucus, making it easier to breathe. Warm fluids such as hot tea and broth can help soothe the soreness in the chest and throat due to coughing.

Steam

Steam is a useful way to treat congestion. Run a hot shower in your bathroom for 10 to 15 minutes. Breathe the steam in through your nose and out of the mouth. The steam helps break up mucus and will make you feel better. Adding eucalyptus oil to boiling water or a humidifier will bring instant relief from coughing and congestion.

Sleeping Suggestions

Sleeping can be bothersome when you are all congested. Lying flat on your back makes the congestion worse because mucus settles in the back of the lungs and obstructs breathing. Sleep with your back slightly propped up with extra pillows, which will make it easier to breathe. Try a medicated vapor rub, which helps to relieve congestion as well.
