There is critical and translational breast cancer research being conducted at medical centers all over the world. This is because breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancers for women--and often one of the most fatal. A lot of people have been pioneers in breast cancer research. They have have done a lot to advance progress and promote public awareness for this form of cancer that affects so many people and their families.

Eva Lee

Eva Lee is one important breast cancer research pioneer. A cancer genetics researcher, Lee's breast cancer research has led to discoveries regarding breast cancer's molecular basis. She is internationally acclaimed for her research of cancer's cell biology as well as genetics. She pioneered genetic manipulation (within mice) in order to study the foundations of breast cancer.

Rose Kushner

Rose Kushner was a breast cancer research pioneer who lived from 1929 until 1990. She discovered a breast cancer lump on her breast in 1974 and decided that she did not want to undergo the traditional breast cancer treatment options. She wanted to have a modified radical mastectomy instead of the conventional standard Halstead radical mastectomy. After she recuperated from breast cancer, she became a leading breast cancer educator and published a book called "Breast Cancer: A Personal History and Investigative Report."

Nancy Brinker

Nancy Brinker established the extremely well known Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation" in 1982 in honor of her sister, Susan Komen, who passed away from breast cancer at age 36. Not as much was known about the disease in the early 1980s, so Brinker set out to redefine the public's standards for breast cancer care and perception.

Michel was the director of the breast cancer center at Highland Park Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and spent his career pioneering lumpectomy surgery in order to develop a more efficient strategy for treating breast cancer.
