Eye Strain And Computer Screens

Computers can cause eye strain.

Computer users should become aware of the symptoms of eye strain, also referred to as "eyestrain." "More than 50 percent of computer users experience eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision and other visual symptoms related to sustained use of the computer," according to Dr. Marc Grossman, O.D. If you have experienced computer-related eyestrain, your work station and habits may need a tune-up. Small corrections can make a big difference.

Considerations

To help relieve computer eyestrain, improve working conditions. Try to maintain good posture while sitting on a well-supported chair. Use a flat, anti-glare screen. If glare continues to bother you, ask your eye physician to prescribe stress-relieving lenses that are designed for computer operation.

Prevention and Solution

To relax your eyes, take regular breaks and do exercises to relieve eye strain. Rub your hands until warm and cup them over your closed eyes. Rest your fingers on your forehead and lean on your elbows, which are supported on your desk. Sit quietly for two minutes and absorb the darkness into your eyes.

Treatment

To hydrate and calm the eyes, alternate very warm and very cold washcloth treatments. Place hot and cold water in bowls. Dip a wash cloth in the hot water and press it against your eyes for 30 seconds. Remove and reverse the action with a cold water cloth. Alternate the action for about three minutes, and gently rub your closed eyes with a soft dry cloth.
