South Beach Diet Desserts

Passing up your favorite foods while on a diet can be heartbreaking. Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of the South Beach Diet, doesn't think you should make it any harder on yourself by skipping dessert at dinnertime.

Phase 1 Desserts

Phase 1 is the strictest phase of the South Beach Diet, with no sugars permitted. Sugar-free gelatin comes in many flavors, or try what Agatston calls Ricotta Crème-- ricotta cheese mixed with sugar substitute and a flavor extract.

Phase 2 Desserts

Fruit makes a comeback in Phase 2. Celebrate with chocolate-covered strawberries, cantaloupe with ricotta cheese or a baked apple. Only eat fruits with a low glycemic index--no watermelon, pineapples or bananas.

Phase 3 Desserts

Red wine-poached pears and chocolate sponge cake will keep your sweet tooth satisfied without sending your blood-sugar levels sky-high. Phase 3 lasts for your lifetime, so it's acceptable to treat yourself to pumpkin pie once in a blue moon. Just don't make it a habit.

Portions

South Beach dieters are not required to measure food. That means no counting carbohydrates or calories. Eat a normal-sized dessert that satisfies your sweet tooth.

When to Enjoy Desserts

South Beach dieters are encouraged to enjoy dessert with every dinner. This prevents sugar cravings from derailing the diet. If you feel the need for something sweet or creamy after lunch, don't be afraid to indulge.
