Camphor Oil Substitutes

Camphor oil and other essential oils are used in aromatherapy treatments.

Camphor oil is used as an alternative remedy for a variety of ailments, including depression, acne, inflammation, arthritis, muscular aches and pains, sprains, rheumatism, bronchitis, coughs, colds, fever, flu and infectious diseases. Substitutes for camphor oil come from essential oils that have similar properties and are beneficial when taken to counteract the same ailments.

Acne

Tea tree oil, lavender oil and sandalwood oil are all recognized as powerful treatments for acne. Tea tree oil acts as an antiseptic, purifying the skin and absorbing excess oil. Lavender oil has antiseptic and anti-fungal properties which can fight bacteria and inflammation. Sandalwood oil is a mild, antibacterial astringent used to cleanse the skin.

Depression

Fish oil has omega 3 fatty acids that some say are helpful in treating depression. Fish oil is derived from oily fish like salmon and tuna. The omega 3 fatty acids found in fish help to regulate hormones in the brain and therefore may assist in regulating the mood of a person suffering from depression. Studies are mixed on the benefits for depression, but it is well documented that the omega 3 fatty acids help with brain memory and performance.

Inflammation and Muscles Aches

Ginger oil, peppermint oil and shambala oil are used for inflammation and muscle aches and pains. Ginger oil has a warming effect and the warmth penetrates muscles when applied to aches and pains. Peppermint oil contains menthol and it stimulates the nerves, causing a soothing effect when applied to the body. Shambala oil is a mix of camphor, cinnamon, peppermint, clove and eucalyptus oils and is used as a treatment for muscle pains, joint pains and arthritis.

Cold and Flu

Oil of oregano, castor oil and cod liver oil are used in combating cold and flu symptoms. Oil of oregano is an anti-fungal and anti-parasite germicide that is used to treat a wide range of conditions. Castor oil is an immune booster that helps remove toxins from the body. Cod liver oil is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin A and vitamin D. It also helps to bolster the immune system.
