Causes Of Hip Pain In Children

Short Lived

One major cause of hip pain is a condition known as transient synovitis. This is generally seen in children between the ages of 3 and 10 years of age. The tissues around the hip inflame and swell causing pain. This condition is more common in boys than girls and it is usually short lived.

Activity

It's no secret that children are for the most part highly active. Sometimes this activity can lead to a strain of the muscles or tendons around the hip. This happens when they are stretched past their given range of motion. Swelling, cramping and even spasms can ensue, which can all lead to pain in the hip.

Bacteria

There is another condition that is characterized by inflammation called osteomyelitis. In this situation, bacteria develops in other parts of the body and it travels through the blood to the hip. This then causes it to swell and become sore. The body can also see other symptoms with this condition such as redness around the affected area and fevers.

Fractures

Hip fractures are more common in older populations, but they are still possible in children as well. The difference is that in children hip fractures are usually the result of a traumatic injury like getting run over by a vehicle or falling out of a tree. When this injury takes place, there is usually severe pain, swelling and no ability to walk.

Tumors

One of the more rare reasons for hip pain in children is from tumors. There is one particular disease called Ewing's Sarcoma that affects the arms, legs and especially the thigh bone in children. But tumors are not always the result of malignant cancer. There are also cysts, benign tumors and lumps that are filled with fluid or puss called abscesses that can also cause pain.
