About Essential Oil Distillers
Essential oils are used for a variety of products and are also used for aromatherapy. These essential oils can be purchased at a store, but they are cheaper and healthier when they are produced at home using an oil distiller. The process is also fun and interesting to watch.
History
Essential oil distillers were invented by a chemist named Ibn Sina. He invented this device for the creation of drinks and perfumes. This led to the creation of much healthier and more potent perfumes.
Function
Essential oils can be extracted from plant materials using essential oil distiller equipment. These essential oils can be used in aromatherapy in order to improve the health and mood of those inhaling the odors. The distiller is necessary because plants degrade when cooked at high temperatures. Using steam can cook the plant at a lower temperature, causing a separation of essential oils and hydrosols.
Hydrosols
Hydrosols are the water remains of a plant when it is distilled using an oil distiller. These hydrosols can be used to create products such as cosmetics, toiletries, toners and room sprays. They also provide the same benefits as the essential oils but in a less concentrated amount.
Features
Essential oil distillers have part called a bird's beak, which prevents steam leaks. A condenser is used to cool steam, causing the steam to revert back into water. These devices are made out of a variety of materials, ranging from copper to a special type of glass called Pyrex.
Using an Essential Oil Distiller
Essential oil distillers can use any type of plant material aside from powders. The material is placed inside a flask that is connected to the top of the distiller. The bottom part of the distiller is slowly filled with water using a faucet or fountain. The water will start to boil and the steam will rise up into the flask above. This distillation process will take about 20 minutes. Wait for the distiller to cool down and then remove the oil and hydrosols from the distiller and place them in a different container. Be sure to clean the distiller before using it again.
