Hives Symptoms & Treatment

Hives are likely to show up unexpectedly, sometimes without any known cause or contact with allergen. They are swollen, red bumps and can appear on any part of the body. Hives can last for several hours and tend to vary in size. If the hives are spreading rapidly or have begun to grow in your mouth or throat it is imperative that you seek medical attention. However, for a minor case of hives, try the treatment options below.

Bathe

Mix 6 tbsp. of oatmeal and 3 tbsp. of cornstarch or baking soda. Add this mixture to a warm bath and soak for 10 to 15 minutes.

Cool Compress

Wet a washcloth in cold water and hold it onto the hives to soothe the itching.

Calamine Lotion

Spread calamine lotion onto the hives to reduce itching.

Antihistamines

Take an over-the-counter antihistamine such as Benadryl to stop the hives from spreading and control the itch.

Cortisone

Rub a small amount of hydrocortisone onto the hives to prevent itching.

Warning

Over-the-counter antihistamines and hydrocortisone can cause allergies in some people. Use caution before using these products.
