Software For Handwriting Recognition

Handwriting-recognition software is popular on mobile devices and computers.

There are two types of handwriting-recognition software: one that processes written handwriting from passive media such as paper and photos, and one that processes live handwriting from active media such as touch screens and digitizer tablets. The technologies used to process passive handwritten documents are optical character recognition (OCR) and intelligent word recognition (IWR). Software for active handwriting recognition may use fuzzy logic and neural network techniques to process live handwriting.

CalliGrapher

CalliGrapher is an award-winning, natural handwriting-recognition software suitable for all handwriting styles: cursive, print and mixed. CalliGrapher employs advanced fuzzy logic and neural network technologies to analyze pen strokes and recognize arbitrary alphanumeric text and words from its dictionary. With its Statistical Analyzer, CalliGrapher uses an adaptive-learning approach to learn about your handwriting styles, address common recognition errors and improve its overall handwriting-recognition quality. CalliGrapher is optimized to work with Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket-PC 2003/2003SE/2005 devices running Windows Mobile 6.0 and older.

Graffiti

Graffiti is a free handwriting-recognition software for Android devices. Instead of typing, you use your fingers to draw predefined Graffiti strokes which resemble the letters of the English alphabet and punctuation symbols. Graffiti also comes with a word-suggestion feature to suggest words to complete your input. Graffiti works on Android versions 1.6, 2.0 and 2.1 and supports both English and Japanese characters.

CellWriter

CellWriter is an open-source, handwriting-recognition software by Michael Levin, developed under a University of Minnesota UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program) grant. Written for the X Window System running on Linux, CellWriter is a grid-entry, natural handwriting input panel. Written characters are recognized, converted and sent to the current, opened application like normal keyboard input. CellWriter relies entirely on handwriting-recognition samples provided by the user for a working recognition. Other users will not be able to use CellWriter from these samples.

MyScript

MyScript provides online handwriting-recognition technology in the form of software development kits (SDK), text-input applications for PC and mobile devices, and professional solutions for Windows PCs and servers. MyScript Stylus, available for PC and mobile devices, is a pen- or finger-based, interactive, natural handwriting-recognition software with a multilingual user interface. MyScript MMS Editor, written for mobile, touch-screen devices, is a multimedia input-editor software with built-in, natural handwriting recognition to send multimedia messages via SMS, MMS or email.
