Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD, is also referred to as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. For children, symptoms most often present themselves when the child reaches school age and enters into a more structured setting, such as the classroom. You can identify symptoms of ADD before your child enters his or her school career.
Impulsiveness
Impulsiveness may lead to engaging in dangerous activities that can cause frequent accidents. Impulsiveness is signified by impatience, initiating conversations at inappropriate times and frequently interrupting or intruding on others.
Inattention
Inattention often becomes more apparent when a child enters school. Signs of inattention include procrastination, disorganized habits, forgetfulness, frequent shifts in conversation and failure to complete tasks before starting another.
Hyperactivity
Hyperactivity is often clearly apparent well before school age. Signs of hyperactivity include excessive talking, restlessness, fidgeting and inability to engage in quiet activities.
Other
Other symptoms of ADD may include not listening to instructions, poor grades, depression, anxiety and asking irrelevant questions at inappropriate times. These symptoms may appear worse when demands increase.
Types
Your child may show some or all of the symptoms depending on the type of ADD they may have. The three types are Combined Type, Predominantly Inattentive Type and Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type.
