Home Remedy For Throat Infections

According to The Mayo Clinic, throat infections, also known as pharyngitis, start by the introduction of a viral infection into the body. In most cases, a sore throat is a sign that a larger virus is infecting the body, such as the common cold or allergies. Normally, a sore throat lasts less than a week and passes with the help of over-the-counter medications and natural remedies. However, if a sore throat lasts longer than a week, strep throat may be a possibility. Seek professional medical attention if the infection lasts longer than 7 days.


Sage Gargle


The sage plant contains numerous nutrients, such as potassium and vitamins C, A and B-complex. Due to these and other properties, sage is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory for throat infections. With the ability to reduce inflammation as well as increase blood flow to the desired area, sage will reduce the amount of pain and the duration of a throat infection.


Bring 1 cup of water to a rolling boil and add 3 teaspoons of sage leaves. Allow the mixture to boil for 3 minutes and then cover the pot to steep for 15 minutes. Once the sage and water have steeped, drain the leaves out of the tea and let it rest for 10 minutes. Gargle the tea for 30 seconds three times per day to reduce throat inflammation as well as to soothe a sore throat.


Apple Cider Vinegar and Cayenne Pepper


Apple cider vinegar contains strong properties that fight inflammation as well as rid excessive phlegm and mucus from sinus cavities and the throat. Cayenne pepper works to increase blood circulation to specific areas of the body. The heating properties of cayenne pepper are gentle when used moderately and effective to soothe throat irritations.


Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of hot water. Add 2 tablespoons of pure agave nectar or honey and stir for 1 minute. Consume this drink three times per day until the throat infection as ceased.


To make a gargle solution for immediate relief of a sore throat, mix 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons of agave nectar in five ounces of warm water. Gargle for 15 to 30 seconds throughout the day for pain relief. Brush your teeth after each session to ensure the acid from the vinegar does not damage the enamel of your teeth.
