Importance Of Vitamins In The Body







On average, the typical American diet is high in fat, low in fiber and void of essential vitamins the body needs. For this reason, many people resort to other means to get what their body requires. Most often, this is in the form of pills, powders, liquids and capsules. But if a healthy diet is followed, most vitamins can be obtained from food sources.


Significance








Without the proper vitamins, the body cannot function optimally. Immunity can become compromised and this can lead to colds, infections and even life-threatening illnesses.


Function


Vitamins are essential nutrients that affect bio-mechanical processes in the body. They also help to facilitate normal growth function, metabolism and cell function.


Types


There are 13 different vitamins that are essential for good health. Four of these are fat soluble; nine, water soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins may be stored in the body for months while water-soluble vitamins can only be stored for a few weeks.


Identification


Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble and specifically help the body with vision, bone health, hair, teeth and blood clotting. Water-soluble vitamins consist of Vitamin C and nine B-complex vitamins. They are involved with energy release, metabolism and proper functioning of the nervous system.


Effects


Antioxidants are vitamins that specifically help to boost the body's immunity. Their main purpose is to kill free radicals in the system. Vitamins A, C, and E are antioxidant vitamins.


Considerations


Many vitamins can be found in fruits and vegetables. Not only do they have plentiful amounts, but they are also good sources of fiber and hydration.


Warning


If you decide to take vitamins in supplement form, be sure to follow the recommendations. Getting too much of a good thing can also be bad for the body as well. Just as an example, mega doses of Vitamin A can cause liver damage and possible birth defects.
