Warfarin, sold under the brand names Coumadin and Jantoven, is a drug that serves as an anticoagulant, or blood thinner. As is often the case with many prescription drugs, warfarin can produce several side effects that vary in intensity and variety. Dose size frequently plays an important role in the occurrence of side effects.
Use of Warfarin
As an anticoagulant, warfarin effectively diminishes the production of blood clots by inhibiting some of the body's blood-clotting factors. Because of its ability to prevent blood clotting within the body, warfarin is often used to prevent heart attacks, strokes and clots occurring in the veins, arteries and lungs. It is also frequently used in individuals recovering from recent heart attack and those with abnormal heart rates.
Side Effects
In the case of warfarin, there have been no common side effects reported. There are, however, a number of severe side effects that have been documented and should be reported immediately if they occur in any individual. Severe side effects include: allergic reaction, including rash, itching, and swelling of the face; back, joint, and muscle pain; bloody stool, urine and vomit; dizziness; fainting; fever; shortness of breath; muscle sores; stroke symptoms; unusual bruising or bleeding; headache; weakness; and yellowing of the skin or eyes. Again, these side effects have been reported rarely, but are severe and should be reported immediately.
Taking Warfarin
Warfarin should be taken exactly as it was prescribed by the individual's doctor. Take with a full glass of water and at the same time every day. Closely follow the dose size and time period of the prescription. Be sure to carry a medical alert card or bracelet in the case of an emergency so that those responding are aware of the the presence of warfarin in the system.
Responding to Overdose
In the case of an overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Visible symptoms of an overdose can include bruising and broken blood vessels under the skin. Excessive bleeding from cuts is also a clear warning sign of potential overdose. If unsure of an overdose, always err on the side of caution.
General Warning
Avoid the consumption of alcohol while using warfarin, as it can increase the intensity of some of the side effects. Do not use acetaminophen or any medications containing acetaminophen. Participation in sports or physical activities is dangerous due to the possibility of bruising or bleeding, something that should be strictly avoided whenever an anticoagulant is involved.
