Tens for Neuropathy Pain

Peripheral neuropathy, also called nerve damage, causes a loss of sensation in your body. Nerve damage can improve in time. However, you and your doctor may decide on a treatment, like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), to reduce symptoms of the condition.

Significance

Peripheral neuropathy affects your nervous system, so slowly you'll feel tingling in your hands and feet which spreads to your arms and legs. This pain may be tingling, burning or sensitivity to touch.

Identification

During TENS therapy, your physician attaches adhesive electrodes on your skin and you receive gentle electric currents. These currents vary, according to the Mayo Clinic, at different frequencies.

Features

TENS is a form of therapy which can be used to treat peripheral neuropathy, according to the University of Chicago.

Considerations

TENS therapy must be prescribed by your physician

Effects

This is a drug-free therapy that can be used alone or in combination with other treatments like tricyclic antidepressants or lidocaine patch.
