Sarcoidosis is an inflammation in the body most likely due to the body's immune response to adverse environmental conditions. The disease starts as small lumps, usually in the organs, and develops throughout the body for a period of two to three years. In some cases, the small lumps bind together to form larger ones. Most sarcoidosis cases dissipate entirely without treatment. Although the cause of sarcoidosis is still yet unknown, there are ways to effectively treat sarcoidosis.

1. Treat symptoms. There is no cure for sarcoidosis, but treating symptoms may enable a patient to live comfortably until the disease goes away on its own. It may also prevent further tissue damage. Interestingly, medications used to treat malaria and some cancers have been known to treat sarcoidosis, too.
2. Avoid adverse environmental exposure to chemicals or other foreign agents. Exposure to chemicals, excessive dust, toxic gases and other environmental agents may induce or exacerbate sarcoidosis.
3. Get tested. You need to know where you have sarcoidosis in order to treat is effectively. It is not uncommon for people to have sarcoidosis and not even know it. The disease may come and go, as well. If sarcoidosis develops in any major organ, it most likely will progress and cause further damage to other vital areas of the body. Get evaluated by a professional, especially if you have a family history of sarcoidosis or similar immune problems. Calcium checks and chest x-rays are two of the most common tests.
4. Avoid surgery. To effectively treat sarcoidosis, you should focus on the symptoms rather than trying to treat the cause. As most doctors are not sure exactly what causes the condition, they may be reticent to approve an invasive procedure. There is risk in having any surgery, so talk with your doctor about alternatives, if possible.
5. Once diagnosed with sarcoidosis, you should get regular medical check ups. This may seem like a "no brainer," but some people simply stop going to the doctor after an initial examination. The disease may spread even if you feel better.
