Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition that causes the sufferer to feel an irresistible urge to move his limbs; usually RLS affects the legs but occasionally it can affect the torso or arms as well. Activity temporarily stops the urge. RLS worsens at rest and in the evening or at night. There is no known cause for the condition.
Homeopathic Medicine
Homeopathic remedies work on the theory that exposure to a particular substance can cause specific symptoms in a healthy person. Therefore, during illness, that substance can stimulate your body's own healing ability to overcome similar symptoms and strengthen the immune system. The Food and Drug Administration regulates homeopathic medicines as drugs. To be considered homeopathic, an ingredient must meet the standards of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS).
Homeopathic Treatments
Although there is as yet no known cure for RLS, various homeopathic remedies can be used to bring relief. Among these are: Aconitum napellus, used to treat patients suffering from anxiety or panic attacks; Arsenicum album, used to treat RLS when the patient also exhibits signs of extreme anxiety and insecurity; Causticum, used when the patient complains of burning sensations, cramps and muscle weakness; Ignatia, used when RLS is accompanied by such emotional signs as laughter and tears as well as wakefulness; Rhus toxicodendron, to be used when the patient also experiences extreme restlessness; sulphur, also to be used when the patient demonstrates restlessness; Tarentula hispanica, useful in aiding sleep; and Zincum metallicum, used when the RLS patient displays great energy that ultimately leads to exhaustion and depression.
Dosage
RLS sufferers should choose the remedy most appropriate for their symptoms. Follow the instructions on the label, or choose the lowest potency. Start with a single dose and wait to see if there is a response. If there is improvement, continue to allow the remedy to work. If there is no response, try another dose.
