Use Of Andrographis

Andrographis has an extensive history of use in both traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical system. It is sometimes referred to as Indian echinacea. Additionally, it is widely used in Scandinavia to boost the immune system to fight off colds and flu. According to natural health experts Phyllis Balch and Dr. Ray Sahelian, this herb has been extensively studied for a variety of medical problems and has proven effective against many conditions.

Heart Attack and Atherosclerosis

A study led by Y.Z. Zhang published in the January 1994 Chinese Journal of Modern Developments concluded andrographis has potential for preventing heart attacks and atherosclerosis. It inhibits the formation of blood clots and it also prevents restenosis, a condition where the arteries reclog after angioplasty. Additionally, it alters how the blood vessels respond to calcium, helping them stay open.

Cold and Flu

Andrographis has been used for thousands of years and one of its best known applications is for boosting immunity to protect against colds, fevers and flu. It prevents infection with rhinoviruses, which are responsible for the majority of common colds. It also alleviates many symptoms of these conditions such as runny nose, fever, sore throat, body aches and fatigue. A double-blind study conducted by D. Caceres published in a 1997 edition of Phytomedicine found that taking 200mg daily of Kan Jang, a commercially prepared andrographis supplement, during cold season reduced the chances of catching a cold by more than 50 percent.

Diarrhea and Other Intestinal Problems

Andrographis is well-known for its ability to fight off viruses and bacteria. It is a useful supplement for treating diarrhea resulting from infection with the E. coli bacteria. It is also potent against inflammation, a common symptom of many intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease.

HIV/AIDS

Studies led by R.S. Chang conducted at the University of California that were published in the May 1991 Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine found this herb was effective against HIV in several ways. First, it prevents the HIV virus from attaching itself to healthy T cells, which are vital for maintaining proper immunity function. It also inhibits the ability of the virus to activate a particular enzyme that forces T cells to make copies of the virus. Lastly, it stops the virus from activating a mechanism that caused uninfected T-cells to die. Since this herb performs many of the same functions as the drugs used to treat this condition, it can help reduce the amount of pharmaceutical agents being used, therefore reducing side effects. Be sure to discuss this with a doctor before reducing medications or adding anything to the treatment regimen.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

This herb has potential to ease this condition, which is caused by mistaken attacks from the immune system and results in painful inflammation of joints. Its immune boosting and anti-inflammatory effects can attack this condition from many angles. A study published in the April 2009 Clinical Rheumatology found that patients taking this supplement experienced reduced pain and inflammation, improved mobility, and a reduced number of swollen joints.

Considerations For Use

This herb is best used in tablet form. For treating and preventing colds and flu, a supplement called Androtech, which combines andrographis with zinc and echinacea, is best. When actively taking this supplement, it can reduce fertility in both sexes. Do not use when pregnant or nursing. This herb has low toxicity and side effects are unlikely. Take as directed on the label.
