Remedy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tendons and nerves in the wrist become compressed and inflamed. There are several causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. However, this condition is common amongst people who frequently use a computer keyboard or work with their hands. The condition can range from mild to severe. And in severe cases, pain and weakness can result in loss of strength in one or more hands. But fortunately, there are ways to remedy the condition and regain strength in the hands and wrist.
Instructions
1. Take over-the-counter medications. Inflammation causes carpal tunnel pain. Take OTC anti-inflammatory medications such as naproxen sodium and ibuprofen to stop inflammation and ease pain.
2. Talk to your doctor about a prescription medication. Oftentimes, carpal tunnel pain doesn't respond to OTC medications. Ask your doctor about alternatives such as a prescription strength anti-inflammatory drug or a corticosteroid. Taken orally or by injection, steroids decrease inflammation and stop pain.
3. Consider a wrist splint. Purchase a wrist splint and wear it while sleeping or resting. Splints immobilize your wrist, and can effectively relieve carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms such as weakness, numbness and pain.
4. Give your hands a break. If working at a computer keyboard, take periodic breaks to give your hands and wrist a break.
5. Apply a cold or heat compress. Heat and cold therapies are effective remedies for carpal tunnel pain. Apply an ice pack or a heat pad to the wrist several times a day for 10 minute intervals to ease pain and inflammation.
6. Reduce pain with surgery. In severe cases, carpal tunnel surgery is necessary to relieve pressure on the tendons and stop pain. A surgeon makes a small incision in the wrist and surgically cuts the ligament causing nerve pressure.
