Naproxen is an over-the-counter drug in the category of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, which people often take for pain relief. It is available under brand names such as Aleve, Anaprox and Midol Extended Relief. Although it is a commonly used drug, naproxen has many side effects, some which increase with long-term use.
Cardiovascular Effects
One serious possible long-term side effect of taking naproxen is a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
Gastrointestinal Effects
Another serious long-term side effect with taking naproxen is an increased risk of stomach or intestinal bleeding, or stomach ulcers. Alcohol can exacerbate this risk.
Blood Thinning
Naproxen acts as a blood thinner, and can increase bleeding from an injury. It should not be taken by people who are also taking anticoagulants.
Sunburn
Naproxen can increase the risk of sunburn because it makes skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light.
Drug Interactions
People taking lithium should not take naproxen because it can raise blood levels of lithium. Naproxen also can interfere with blood pressure medication.
