Moxa Treatments

Moxa treatments are generally called moxibustion. Moxibustion is an herbal treatment involving Moxa, which is also known as Mugwort. Moxibustion entails burning the herb over or on the skin at certain acupuncture points. This stimulates both the movement of the blood and Qi (life force energy).

Moxa treatments can be performed alone or alongside acupuncture therapies. Many people enjoy Moxa treatments because the scent is very soothing. Moxibustion is useful for injuries, pain, digestive issues, menstrual problems, blood stagnation and the common cold.

Types

Depending on your preference, there are many different treatment formats for moxibustion. You can choose from stick, loose, smokeless, fresh and liquid forms of moxa. The type of moxa you choose depends on what calms and soothes you the most.

History

Moxa treatments are a traditional practice that started in China and then spread to other parts of Asia, including Japan. The name of this herbal treatment for burning dried leaves cones on the body comes from the name of the wormwood plant that is most often used for this procedure: Artemisia moxa. In ancient times, the Chinese believed that burning specific body points promoted circulation "full bloodedness" and soothed pain.

Identification

Moxa treatments heat or burn specific parts of the body, generally the same points used for acupuncture. Usually, points located near large blood vessels, ears and eyes are used for moxa treatments. Heating these body areas helps increase circulation in the area.

Function

In modern times, with moxibustion, the herb is generally crushed, wrapped up in paper, lit, and then held directly above the point that is to be warmed. It also can be placed on the skin and removed before overheating happens. In Japan, small tubes with handles in which the plant gradually burns away are used. These sticks burn for about five minutes.

Benefits

Moxa treatments historically have been used to relieve symptoms of rheumatism pains. Other common conditions that moxa treatments can help include congestion, digestive issues, stomachache, nausea, vomiting and respiratory disorders. Moxa treatments are also commonly used to provide anesthetic effects.
