Use Eucalyptus for Cough


Eucalyptus, in a variety of forms, as been used for centuries as a natural remedy to treat fevers, wounds, respiratory ailments and even as a powerful antiseptic. One of the best natural treatments for colds and flu, a few tips can teach you use eucalyptus to soothe a cough.


Instructions


1. Choose eucalyptus products which contain the eucalyptus forms blue gum or Australian fever tree. While there are many species of eucalyptus, these two varieties have the greatest medicinal properties.


2. Make eucalyptus tea from either fresh or dried eucalyptus to soothe a cough. Break a single leaf into small pieces and place it in a large mug. Cover with boiling water, cover and allow to steep for 5 minutes and add a bit of honey if you like. Children under 6 should drink only three cups each day, while adults may drink up to five, sipping slowly while hot.








3. Use eucalyptus tincture if dried or fresh leaves are not available. Simply add 10 drops to a glass of warm water, drinking three times each day.


4. Rub eucalyptus essential oils on your chest to help soothe a cough, particularly when it makes sleeping difficult. Mix 20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil into 1/3 cup of olive oil and massage into the chest when needed to relieve a cough.








5. Relieve a cough and congestion at the same time by preparing a eucalyptus steam. Boil two cups of water and then add 5 to 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the water. Place your head over the steaming water, covering your head with a towel, and inhale deeply for 5 to 10 minutes, repeating as needed.


6. Purchase eucalyptus cough drops at your local health food store for a sweet way to soothe a cough. Always follow the manufacturer's directions, not taking more than recommended. Eucalyptus cough drops should never be given to children under 6 years of age.
