For some dogs, proper care necessitates brushing their teeth.
Many dogs with a healthy varied diet will never suffer from teeth problems. Other dogs seem to have endless troubles with their teeth and gums. Dogs suffer from periodontal disease as humans do and veterinarians advise dog owners, especially owners of dogs who seem susceptible to these difficulties, to brush their dog's teeth regularly. Veterinarians sell special toothpaste for dogs but a pet owner can easily prepare a homemade toothpaste solution at home with a few widely-available ingredients.
Instructions
1. Place 6 teaspoons of baking soda, 1/3 of a teaspoon of salt and 4 teaspoons of glycerin (available at a pharmacy) in a container.
2. Add about 2 teaspoons flavor that will interest the dog, such as a bit of chicken or beef broth.
3. Mix the ingredients together.
4. Place some toothpaste on a finger and let the dog sniff it. Start rubbing the toothpaste on the dog's teeth with a finger. When the dog becomes used to the toothpaste on her teeth, start using a brush on just the dog's front teeth. Gradually, on subsequent days, begin brushing those teeth toward the back of the dog's mouth.
