Chiropractic Treatment For Bipolar Disease

Chiropractic Treatment for Bipolar Disease

According to the book "New Hope for People with Bipolar Disorder," this condition is most likely a hereditary mental illness. Chiropractic treatment cannot change your biology or genetics. but it can provide relief from neurological symptoms that may mimic bipolar disease.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, or manic depression as it is sometimes called, is a mental illness that causes tremendous highs and lows in mood. Typically, manic and depressive periods can flip-flop quickly. The various types of bipolar disease depend upon how often the vacillating moods occur.

Neurological Disorders

There is evidence that neurological conditions (multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and stroke) can mimic bipolar disorder. Some chiropractors claim that they can treat these conditions through cervical manipulation.

Other Conditions

Thyroid issues, infections that affect the brain, medications, and vitamin deficiencies may also cause symptoms that look like bipolar disorder. None of these conditions will be improved with chiropractic treatment alone.

Trauma

If you begin experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder after trauma, chiropractic treatment may help. Trauma to the neck or spine can produce manic symptoms, anxiety, depression, and more. Car accidents, falls, and sports injuries may cause trauma that brings on bipolar-like symptoms. In one documented case, a young man was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a fall caused cervical trauma. Chiropractic treatment helped reverse his symptoms.

Considerations

Not all chiropractors will be trained or familiar with treating someone with bipolar disorder. Check with the American Chiropractic Association (http://www.acatoday.org/) for referrals or research articles related to chiropractic treatment of bipolar disorder.
