Prevent Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. Every year it claims more than 500,000 lives. Coronary artery disease occurs when plaque builds up inside the arteries blocking the flow of blood to the heart. This blockage can lead to a heart attack. You can dramatically reduce your chances of developing heart disease with a few lifestyle changes.

Instructions

1. Eat healthy well balanced meals. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grain cereals can help keep your cholesterol level down. Fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel are great sources for omega-3 fatty acids which can prevent blood clots and reduce your chances of having a heart attack.

2. Stay physically active. Even leisure activities like gardening, dancing or walking can reduce your risk. Try to put in at least 30 minutes per day. This will help keep your blood pressure and cholesterol low and reduce your risk for diabetes.

3. Maintain a healthy weight. This can reduce your risk for developing coronary artery disease since extra weight puts a significant amount of strain on your heart. Talk to your doctor about the ideal weight for your height and body type.

4. Learn properly manage stress. You can actually cause yourself to have a heart attack by getting overly emotional or angry. You can reduce your stress level through meditation and relaxation therapy.
