Cope With The Sideeffects Of Tamoxifen

Tamoxifen is a medication which is given to prevent breast cancer. It is an anti-estrogen medication which blocks estrogen activity in the breasts. It also helps prevent the growth of breast cancer cells. Because this medication blocks estrogen activity, it may put you in a chemically induced menopause. Menopause, whether induced naturally, chemically, or surgically from ovary removal, comes with many side effects. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to relieve some of the side effects of Tamoxifen. Always see your doctor before treating your side effects.

Instructions

1. See your doctor. You will need a comprehensive medical examination so that your doctor can devise a treatment plan that will be most beneficial for your situation. If you cannot tolerate the side effects from Tamoxifen, he may suggest alternative treatments to prevent breast cancer.

2. Inquire about acupuncture. Acupuncture may relieve hot flashes and night sweats associated with side effects of Tamoxifen. Check with your doctor before you make an appointment with an acupuncturist.

3. Try calcium supplements. Calcium supplements may help decrease the incidence of hot flashes that may be a side effect of Tamoxifen.

4. Ask your doctor about antidepressant medication. Side effects of Tamoxifen can include depression and mood swings. Your doctor may prescribe an antidepressant for temporary use until your mood brightens, or he may keep you on antidepressant therapy indefinitely.

5. Step up your exercising. Tamoxifen can cause weight gain. Exercise not only helps stave off depression and anxiety, it can help keep your weight down. A moderate walking program will help keep your weight in check. Be sure to check with your doctor before you start any exercise regimen.
